I have a 79 with the stock saginaw 4-speed.
I can shift the car when idling , but after i drive down the road and down shift the tranny will not go back into 1st . I can some times shift through the gears when stopped and it will go back into 1st.
I have to let the clutch out slowly while pushing on the shifter to get it back into 1st.
I filled the oil, checked the linkage and adjusted and aligned to neutral. I adjusted the clutch.
The tranny makes no noises .
Any ideas?

why in the heck are you down shifting to first? First gear is only shifted in to during a acceleration. Second is the lowest gear you should shift down to unless you are at a complete stop.
your clutch linkage could need some adjusting.

I'm sure I'll be corrected if I'm wrong, but there are no synchronizers on first or reverse. The engineers didn't see a need to downshift into first so they didn't design the tranny to do so. If you really feel you have to cram it into first...try goosing the trottle a bit while pushing the shifter forward. Not a big rev, just a little blip to get the engine RPMs near the first gear RPMs.
There is a school of thought that for every downshift, you loose an upshift in the life of the clutch...wear and tear on the disk. If you're trying to save your brakes by downshifting, the clutch is alot harder to change.

exactly! I cant beleive people down shift so much and not use there brakes! I rather wear some brakes down then put stress on the drive train and the clutch disk. I see no need to down shift into first.

How does it shift into reverse? This is a test of the clutch, engine idling, trans in neutral, clutch out, push in clutch and wait about two seconds, then shift into reverse. If it rakes bad the clutch needs looked at. Only thing I can think of that would cause a bad shift into first.

The clutch is new 2,000 miles on it. I adjusted linkage on the shiter to neutral location , and checked to see if every thing was tight. I can get the tranny into every gear, except 1st once I drive down the road and stop i can not get the tranny back into 1st.
