ive put a moroso timing gear set and aluminium cover on my sb, question i have is that the cover also extends out around where the water pump bolts on, making my water pump stick out 3/8in further forward which will make the rest of the pulleys out of alingnment! do i cut off the peices on the timing cover so the water pump goes back to it oringal spot or space out the pulleys? what do you think i should do? or any other sugestions? anyone else used this gear set before? thanks

.

That's weird they did that.

I would remove the excess. Without photo's, it sounds much easier then the alternative??

If the water pump is sticking 3/8" out, how would it seal against the block?

I think that answers your questions.

Pics would definitely help but I think your only choice is to modify the timing cover. What version cover is this?

i know pics would be good but im crap with the computer and dont know how to resize them, the water pump bolts onto the timing cover, im thinking its designed to run with an electric water pump, which will eliminate the pulley issue. Ive been building this motor for 5years and its finally time to install it into the car, as you can imagine plans have changed along the way.

Moroso doesn't even list a SBC timing cover on their website. Where did you buy this & how long ago?

the water pump bolts onto the timing cover,

Not any SBC engine I've ever seen, are you sure your not trying to put a SBF timing cover on this engine?

I don't remember seeing any water pump bolt on to a timing chain cover either??
If you can look through jegs or summit, and see if anything looks similar, and give us a part number.

I've never seen the timing cover that you're talking about either. If it was me and I wanted to use that timing cover, I'd take it to my machinist and have them mill 3/8 of an inch off it. Or you could always buy a "short" water pump and get the spacers to use it on a "long" water pump application and have the spacers milled down to the size you need. That might be easier.

Don't try to do it yourself unless you are 100% SURE you can make it square so you get a good seal when you reinstall it. Just my $.02.

If he just cuts the ears off, it will fix his issue. He should clean up the cut,
but for this instance he doesn't need to have it machined/milled. He can do it with a grinder or ??

I'm still wondering what this piece is?? I would love to see a photo or part number??

Looks like a nice piece if you like gear drive.

My idea stands, I would just remove the ears and clean up the cut.

I still wonder what were they thinking???

I'd call or email Milodon & ask them if there are any issues with cutting those ears off. That design is a dumb idea in my book but maybe the cover need the strength in that area, I don't know.

Either do what mrdragster1970 recommended doing and have the pieces (ears) that go between the water pump and the block machined off. Or have the water pump machined down enough so everything will line up and be nice and square. It looks like a nice piece, JMHO, YMMV! :D

Machining the cover(if it won't cause strength issues or leaks) is the better choice, a custom water pump would be a PITA to replace on a dark highway when it fails.
