Does anybody have or have built a stand to run an engine on? I want to build one to run my engine on after its built because the last two times it has been installed it had a leak where it was not easy to get to. So I guess I am just looking for some pics or some advice...

You're better off finding a local engine builder and book yourself some dyno time.

Not only will you be able to do repairs on the dyno stand, but you can also tune for peak power.

I would like to be able just put it on a dyno but I cant find anybody somewhat locally with an engine dyno, just chassis dynos. I was planning to take to a chassis dyno this summer, so I would be happy to be able to just run it and check for leaks and make sure there are no problems before I put it in my car.

Its pretty easy to build one. Just google "engine run stand" or engine test stand.

If you can cut and weld, you won't have any probs.

I made one from scrap 2x2 steel box and 2x3 box tube, some roll cage bars for the frame, 1/4" thick plate for the engine mounts, 1x1 tube for the fuel tank mount, rad. mount. and to hold battery.

Used a good used junkyard $40 alum core, plastic tank rad., ford turus elec fan, 5 gal gas can for fuel tank.

The wiring is easy. Make up a control panel from some scrap sheet metal. Have a push to start button with gator clips on end of wires (so you can just clip it to starter)

Ign. kill switch on panel that runs from battery to toggel to dizzy.

Add in a mech. oil pressure, water temp gauge and a tach.

I even have a throttle on mine. Made from an old lawn mower (push mower) throttle lever and cable

I've thought of making one myself. I'd probably only use it once though. Don't know if it's worth it for me.

Dude i used to think an engine test stand had to be some big heavy duty steal contraption and then bolted to the floor. Till i saw one my buddy made and boy was i wrong, there really easy to build if you can weld im sure if you got really created you could cut and bolt one together.

if you want to go extreme bubba i have seen heaps of people run them just on a plank of timber with supports under each side of the sump or under the exhaust manifolds. just start it up with some jumper leads grounding out the starter with a screw driver to start it up and just pull the coil lead to turn it off.

I've seen on utube were someone started it sitting on the open headers.
Didn't look safe to me

I've thought about it but always run into the expense of getting the cooling system hooked up.
To test for small leaks,it will need to run for awhile

I have seen the video of the guy on youtube running his motor sitting on the headers... I wont be doing that with a set of $600 headers on it. I think im just going to find some square tube steel and do some cutting and welding and see what happens, it doesn't look too challenging to build. I just thought I would see what some other people thought. I have an extra msd box, coils, a radiator, and a few batteries so I should have everything I need...
