View Full Version : 4-speed to automatic swap.
Dave tabor 09-27-2003, 02:53:00 PM Hey guys, what all do I need to change/buy in order to convert my 79 z from it's stock 4speed to a 350 Auto ? So far I have an auto cross member from an 80z and a 350 trans. I know I need a radiator or a trans cooler for an atomatic trans but what else needs attention?
badazz81z28 09-27-2003, 05:02:00 PM you can buy a trans cooler or find a stock auto radiator.
Dont forget the convertor/flexplate/ shifter cable and shifter. that should be about it. very simple. Why are you swapping over?
lets just trade cars http://www.nastyz28.com/ubb/wink.gif
1981coupe400ci 09-27-2003, 06:02:00 PM since your swaping ,if you wanna sell some of the 4 speed parts LET ME KNOW i need some things to finish my auto to 4speed swap
thanks
angel71rs 09-28-2003, 11:07:00 PM The th350/powerglide/early muncie/saginaw all had same over all length, so could use the same drive shaft and even the same yoke (except for M22). But in 71 the Muncies got 1" longer. That lenght is also used by Super T10 that should be in your 79. So drive shaft might need to be changed.
79_Berlinetta_Guy 09-29-2003, 11:54:00 AM Why are you going from 4speed to auto? I want to do just the opposite!
aero80 09-29-2003, 01:11:00 PM I am thinking about yanking the Super T-10 from my '80 and replacing it with a T350, but only temporarily due to a couple of years of rush hour fwy traffic coming up. That will be basically the only chance I have to drive my car. :-(
After that, it's back in with the clutch.
Mommy-shifters are ok, but since I'm not a mommy I'll stick with my 4-gear.
Nah. You know what? The more I think about it, just forget it. Besides, a new clutch is cheaper than a trans conversion I'd hate anyway.

COPO 09-29-2003, 02:02:00 PM Usually it's the other way around, auto to a 4 spd. Are you not having fun with the 4 gear?

Dave tabor 10-05-2003, 11:48:00 AM The T-10 is a blast to drive but I wanna bracket race the car and not destroy the 4-speed. That way I can go back to a 4-speed later. th350 would be way better for traction and consistency at the drags.
Chuck78 10-05-2003, 09:35:00 PM aero80, just get a centerforce dual friction...
the Super T-10 and TH400 use the same yoke, the TH350 uses a different yoke (different # of splines).

Sold my 81 Z28 to Marty (Blazer87) and just unloaded my 78 - Just got a 71 RS SS396 project! in the works: Caprice Wagon spindle & 1LE Camaro 12" ft discs / Trans Am WS6 rear disc conversions, poly susp., 1.25" WS6 ft sway bar & 1" rear Rancho adjustable sway bar / 4 speed nodular case Super T-10 conversion
Als78z28 10-05-2003, 11:51:00 PM It's kind of funny. So many people swithcing from auto to 4-speed and so many people from 4-speed to auto. Maybe these people need to get together and swap cars. I personally couldn't imagine getting rid of my 4-speed, but then again, it'll never be a racer. If Dave's going to race, then it probably would be a good idea to go with auto. It is probably going to do better. Although, I have seen a few people able to really shift good and do well at the track. I like the carizma (I know the spelling is way off on that word) a 4-speed offers. Kind of like the difference between a Honda and a Harley.
La.Z8 10-07-2003, 11:13:00 PM I did the same swap to my 79 Z for the same reasons. The 4-sp crossmember will work just fine. You will need a different driveshaft. I just mounted a large trans cooler in front of my rad. and it works fine and I`m cooling a 406.You also need to look at your starter nose to see if it will fit.Don`t forget the speedometer cable. Are you going to use a factory auto console? If you are you will need the cable mounts for the trans, the bracket, with rubber gasket, that goes through the floor. One other item is the automatic kickdown cable to the carb. I blocked mine off.
aero80 10-08-2003, 06:39:00 PM Thanks Chuck, I had forgotten about the Centerforce clutch. They (Midway Industries) used to be right up the street from me, but moved to Ariz.
A good pedal for a 200 mile-a-day commute.

ForbesSS 10-08-2003, 09:41:00 PM I too love to drive a stick (6 speed please). But, when I decided to step up to fairly good HP levels (+500) I realized I could not afford a clutch/trans to support this. If NOS is part of the equation, well that is much worse. A fairly stock TH400 is very plentiful and cheap...and can handle amazing amounts of HP. Anyone price a Lenco or Liberty lately? Fun or not, it is just plain easier and cheaper.
