View Full Version : best place to buy a crate motor

yes i tried the search but it sucks. LOL

i was going to try to get together a few prices on a 350 or 383, cause yesterday when i started my car it had a really bad miss and a knocking sound coming from the back passenger side cylinder.i pulled the back plug and its oil soaked.

anyway i figured i'd look at the prices of buying a crate motor versus building one and im sure you guys know some good places.
i have a spare 350 block and i thought about getting it cleaned and checked out to make sure it would be a good candidate to make a 383 out of. that would cost $80 and then see how much they'd charge to do the machining and install the crank and pistons. just trying to figure out this car thats fighting me every step of the way. hell i just got done installing the last gauge on sunday then this happens

Your local GM dealer.

That's what I did!

If there was any problem with it... I wanted someone close to deal with the warranty.

I'll tell you what, depending on where you live machine work prices can get crazy. In South Florida machine work prices for anything are just insane.

3 years back.. I bought a ZZ383 late one piece seal short block from the dealer and paid the highest price ever for it. It STILL was about the same price as machine work and build costs for re-buiding a used 350 blah, blah.

GMPP engines and shortblocks are a great way to go.

How do you like that ZZ383 Kenny?

The trouble with the local GM dealers (at least the ones I seem to go to...:screwup) is that their prices are a good 15-20% higher than mail order, and that's AFTER shipping is included. $1000 saved on a $4000-5000 crate setup is a big deal, IMO.

I've also had great luck with Scoggin Dickey and Sallee Chevrolet (now Gilbert Chevrolet in OR).

Look into Yearone.

IIRC, there's a NastyZ28 discount code that takes an additional percentage off, which puts the price pretty low.

Look at yearones crates, Some are discount exempt...but look closely some are not! 15% off and additional Volume discount...you can get a nearly 500hp roller cam engine for $3600-$3800 SHIPPED!!! IIRC

I think its pretty decent. Not a performance motor, but like it says a good entry level motor. If I only $1800 and needed a motor, I would consider it.

Yea. That discount code is NASTY15

Can you get by with a new short block?

If so, there are options from companies like P.A.W. Basically an engine you assemble yourself.

That's why I said I paid the highest price possible. Bought the thing local GM and figure I overpaid about $300-$400

I was stupid when I got the ZZ 383 short block because I went and put some older re-done 76cc heads off of my old 350 on it. .It's set up for a roller but I went flat tappet.

Left the car like that for a year, pulled those off and put on the new 64cc Vortecs with a new Voodoo @508 "from Scoggin Dickey, lesson learned" and the car felt like it gained 75hp.

What I learned is that compression, stroke and flow builds torque ....and that's what these cars are dying for.
I say screw the 350s with big HP and RPM numbers..to me it does no good to brag about how your car has 400 hp blah,blah...when that Mustang just left you at the stoplight.

Our cars are heavy suckers, torque rules with our cars on the street..... 383 or hd built 355 with aluminum heads, you need at a minimum of 400 ft lbs of tq. to get our cars moving in the fast lane ha...... more is better..... thats why i love my 406...... 383-406 for sbc or 454 - larger for bbc.....

Before you get started what is transferable off the old engine.

I don't know your ride so does it have a built up top end with Alummy heads/ intake and other good stuff already. Buying a nice short block is really cheap if you can finish it off with intake & heads.

Crates are nice and the guy I just bought my car hood from has one but is not too happy with the seal on it. ( lol ) It's the HO 300 hp Crater from GM and not a thing he can do to it until warranty expires. So what ever your end goals are is what dictates which direction you go. If you can get along fine with that crate for 5 years or mileage then go for it.

I also looked at Pace Peformance stuff and thought their prices were great.

GM Gen IV Engines are in the $2,000 range within 400hp range. Easily upgradable to 500hp with good street manners.
That doesn't include all the supporting components , but I'd go modern starting fresh.
Modern heads are going to destroy anything old school.

I've also had great luck with Scoggin Dickey and Sallee Chevrolet (now Gilbert Chevrolet in OR).

When I was price shopping crates, those were always the top 2 options.

I bought a ZZ383 for my `84 Z28 about 3 years ago and approx. 8 months ago I bought a HT383 for my `80 Berlinetta and I bought them both @ Summit.
Do a little search on the net and Summit will beat the cheapest price.
I personally think that the best way to go is a NEW crate engine and not a rebuild one because of the price of rebuilding is huge (at least over here in Europe)

i really do thank you all for all your help.

the guy that was gonna build my engine if i decided to go that route made some calls today and thinks he might have found me a built 383 with 450h.p. and less than 2000 miles that comes with a built 350 turbo trans for $1500. it sounds like one of those to good to be true deals but i wont know till friday.

Good Luck though.

It's probably a legit offer. Trans isn't worth much at all.......at least from what I've seen.
"Built" probably means a shift kit.

I've found alot of people pulling their drivetrains and selling them cheap because
of all the modern Gen III and Gen IV options so cheap, they can't compete, so
they are dumping their drivetrains. I was testing the market for my 442's Rocket 350 / TH350
and you'd be sick too if you heard how pathetic the asking prices are......roughly the same range. :whine:

I don't care tho......still goin and it will subsidize the new engine stuff. I'd DEFINITELY tell you to look used.
You're going to find some sick deals waiting right now because of the sh** market out there.
