Yeah I know its kinda dumb, but everytime I hear "oh, you need a bigger/smaller stall on that, 2400, blah blah" whatever, I seriously have no idea what you are talking about. Just trying to learn here, thanks for the replies.

The quick and dirty version is this: when somebody is talking about the stall rating of a torque converter, it refers to the maximum rpm the engine can turn (with rear wheels immobilized).

Basically, a higher stall torque converter gives a higher launch rpm, therefore a harder launch. The downside is higher stall converters slip more, and generate more heat.

Anything over about a 2400 rating is going to need an aftermarket trans cooler. Mind you, a trans cooler is cheap insurance regardless of your converters stall rating.

Worthy of note: a mildly built small block is not likely to require a higher stall converter. In fact, a high stall converter can actually hurt the performance of a car with a mild or near-stock engine. This problem is magnified even further if you have tall (lower numerically) rear end gears, like 3.08 (very common in the 2nd generation Camaro).

Just my opinon, but unless you're getting close to the 400 horsepower mark, a higher stall converter is not going to help you.
