I can't beleive this happened !
I was getting the engine ready to fire up for the first time.
While filling the radiator up with antifreeze
I heard some dripping going on under the car so I had a look , to my disbelief ! I noticed transmission fluid draining out the vent on the top of the transmission .
I had maybe 3 qrts of tranny fluid in the torque converter , along with 2 qrts of fluid in the pan . I poured in about 3 1/2 gallons of antifreeze into the radiator before noticing this .
I have taken the tranny pan off , drained the antifreeze , and what was left of the transmission fluid also drained the tail shaft .
My question is : Should I take the transmission out of the car , pull it apart for cleaning , is the torque converter going to be full of antifreeze now ? This was supposed to be a good radiator , now I know why the last guy who owned this car had the transmission line holes plugged on the rad , and was running a big cooler.
so any sugestions would be apprieciated .
Thanks

Converter won't be full of fluid, but I'd dump it out to be safe. Car didn't run, so it didn't get 'pumped' full of fluid.

Drain the fluid, refill it properly, and get a new radiator (or get this one fixed). Prolly might wanna change the tranny fluid after a few weeks just to be safe as well.

Then again, the gycol in the A/F mighta screwed up the clutches...but someone else would have to fill us in on that....

Can't say what AF will do to the clutches- but I would say wipe everything down, drain converter, tighten pan back up and fill to overflow with fluid. ATF is lighter than water or AF- so it will rise and hopefully drive any remaining AF back to the pan. Do this and then empty the pan (no need to waste a filter up to this point- you didn't fire it up for this). Replace filter and gasket- fill it up, start it up run it for a bit (shifting through gears to move fluid around)- then take off one of the cooling lines at radiator (preferably the output line from transmission) to let the pump push tranny fluid out while you pour new fluid in the filler tube- i.e. a complete at-home tranny flush.

I think if AF would screw up the clutches- it's too late now- so might as well run it to see what happens.

I have had the pan off for the last few days , there is no anti freeze apparent draining out of the tranny.
What tranny line is the output line ? I'm going to fill , then pump the tranny to flush out any remaining anti freeze that might be left in there , drain the pan , replace the filter and gasket as Eric stated . We'll see what happens .
Rebuild the rad for sure , hopefully I won't have to rebuild the tranny again .
