I am reworking my garage. My goal is to get all lawn and garden stuff in the shed and bikes out of the way. I need ideas on how to store the bikes so that they take up as little space as possible.

I used hooks like these, screwed into the rafters and the bikes hang by them real nicely!! You can get them a places like Home Depot.

i feel your pain, I have two young girls, wife and my two bikes for a total of five bikes. I used large hooks and hung the bikes from the rafters along the side wall of the garage.

I have mine tucked in the shed.. but only half hanging. I have a ? hook just like in the pic above, and I pull the bike back into a wheelie, hook the front wheel on the ? hook and the back tire rolls up to the wall.

Works great... as rarely as my bikes are out. :whine:

We store our like POS71 in his pic. But we go handlebars up, down and up again so we can get them closer together. We have about 20 not including the collector bikesand I can get 20 across a single bay of garage. In spring we're losing the garage ceiling and vaulting..the seldom used bikes are going up into airspace.

Thanks for the ideas. My garage does not have a ceiling (at this time) I have trusses 2' on ctr. i was thinking about using bike lifts to pull the bikes up between the trusses.

my garage has a 10 ceiling.... we hang them from the rims on the rubber coated hooks.... and they are high enough that easily walk under them

I have 9' ceilings, and I hang them from hooks. You will definitely hit your head on them though. I try to pull them over with bungee cords. In the summer they go in the shed. Right now lawn furniture and pool stuff is in there.

We used to do the hooks up high but it was difficult for the kids to get them when we were not around. We came up with a rack that made it easier to move in and out of the way and they could remove and replace them whenever they used them.

Don't have any pics of it but it is very similar to the one Harbor Freight sells in the following link:

Your kids don't just leave them in the alley, driveway, yard, or the stairs? Mine do, usually the yard though. I am constantly bringing them in, I'd rather do that then have screwed up brakes and shifters.

when hanging bikes with a front shock, make sure to hang it with the rear tire up and the front down. do not hang it upside down or front tire up. reason being, the front shock has fluid in it that will drain out through the seals over time and leave you with a large weight on the front of the bike and rotten seals.

one bike per stud or span with a 2x4 an you can hang closer together.

some people have working cars, i have working bikes and yes, my bikes are worth more than my cars.

Best to build a shed out side or buy some small thing from Lowes to stick the bikes in. I explained to my wife that bikes in a garage with nice cars is a no -no. They can go anywhere on the property ,but in the garage with my cars. No hanging bikes in "MY" garage . end of story.:)
