Hi all. I was just wondering how much power can someone get out of a hydraulic Flat Tappet Cam on a SBC. How many of you were able to get into the low 12's 11's or even 10's... I would really like to know.

Post your setups if you don't mind::bowtie:

Which cam?

Engine displacment?

Heads?

Compression ratio?

Car?

Car wieght?

Gear ratio?

Trans?

Stall?

Carb size?

Intake?

And anything else you you like to list. If you run a solid flat tappet you can post you setup too also. Thanks guys....

Well I went 12.42 with a voodoo 268. This is in a streetcar no race trim.Switched to a bigger hydro roller and went 11.66 with the same setup. If you don't want to go roller why not a solid FT?

Nice...I'm just curious to see other people's acomplishments.
Thought it would be cool to see... I'm thinking of swapping the HYD. for a Solid Flat Tappet in the 355 so i can use the same valve train.
The roller cam i will use in the 406 instead.
For some reason i really feel like trying to see if i can break into the 11's with the comp cams 294H. I did it before with my other camaro 10 years ago with a crane ENERGIZER 302H and 11:5:1's. (car went 11.94)

Hydraulic flat-tappet....quickest I went was 12.15/110.5 on drag radials in my '77 Z-28. 400 small block, Vortec heads ported by me, Crane 234/244, 2800 stall, 4.10 gears. Car weight with me in it and 1/2 tank fuel was 3750 lbs. Launch was off-idle and it was in mid-July, very hot temps.

The guy I bought my car back from had a hopped up, .040" over 300hp/327 in it w/ no more than medium valve double-humps, an old cast-iron 300hp/327 AFB intake and a cheap aluminum adapter along w/ a 600 cfm, 1850 Holley and headers on it. Cam was an old Crane 272/216 Energizer single pattern jobber.

Anyway, my car is an M-20, 3.31 posi car and he said that he had a 12.9 time slip from a south Cali strip w/ no more than a small set of real slicks!

I believed him b/c it ran like a "scalded-dog"!!!

But my car is an early '66 year '67 Camaro so it is light weight.

No track time yet but I rebuilt alot of the car. 10.34:1 compression, Brodix IK200 heads, howards solid flat cam, 249/252@.050", 106 lsa, 1.6 full rollers, .570"/.579" lift

9.5" 3500 stall, ford 9" rear with 3.89 gears and detroit locker,

strange man. brake master cyl. no prop valve, TCI line lock

Holley 4150 HP 750 DP

Which cam?...Comp XE284

Engine displacment?...factory 402

Car wieght?...3660 with me in it

Gear ratio?...3:90

Trans?...Turbo 400

Stall?...4800

Carb size?...Holley 750 dp

I have gone 12.21 @ 108 but last week put in a new 8" race converter, got the correct valve springs for the cam lift and tuned it on the dyno...I am hoping for 11.90's which would be cool for a cam only motor...

whats up NIGHT...Sorry to hear about your personal problems. Good to see you'll be back in it soon. I was looking up your cam and it's listed as a MAX OVAL cam. Hows that cam working for you? What are you shifting at? whats your trap speed? Did you get the small base circle cam?Just asking becuase theres 2 listed with the same specs. Howards just came out with a new mech. Lifter (DIRECT LUBE .021 Laser Drilled center holes).

No real track time yet, just tuning on street with a performance meter kinda like a G tech.

Shifting at 7000 rpm feels about the best and gets best results on the meter

I'm running the std. core not the small base circle cam, I'm also running their EDM lazer drilled direct lube lifters with it

Cam seems great. Its a daily driven car and with the 3.89 gear and 3500 stall theres no lack of torque at any road speed.

My 454 is coming out in a couple weeks. What have you done to pull a 9.77?

onovakind67
01-14-2010, 08:17:37 AM
Don Klarr was a chassis builder, and this particular one was a 180" FED originally built as a top fueler that was my Bracket 1 car. I used a 454 from a station wagon, a set of Basset boat headers, A1 Glide, etc. It had a Vega radiator and an electric driven pump to cool it on the return road. I ran this car in the late 70's.
