You can make 600 hp with stock oval port cast iron heads. You can put the best quality aluminum heads on and not get 600 hp.
What I'm getting at is that 600HP wont be made with your heads, nor will it be restricted by your heads. The design of the BBC head is a very good design, and just port matching them to your intake manifold will work awfully well. With the right engine mods the stock heads will handle 600 hp.

As long as those stock heads are not peanut port heads, and you can get some decent compression.

post back the last three head casting numbers that are between the rocker studs.

May be like a -215 or -063 or a -781 or -049??

Or the PP head, the -236??

Lets say you find a set for $100 get them decked, valvejob, checked for cracks, hot tanked, new springs.seals etc......
Whats a port and polish job go for to get around 600hp ?
When my dad did his 781s way back he had $900 into them and he did all the work himself.
Id rather spend a little more and ditch the weight.

Fwiw, Mark Jones, (aka, Vortecpro), make's GREAT power w/ his reworked over stock heads so go from there!

No more than just a bowl-blend and a good multi-angled seat job on say, an old closed chambered -206 head, .020" thick steel shim headgaskets on a stock '70's to '80's 454 P/U engine will wake it right up b/c the CR. will be up around 9.2 to 1 so that a decent 270 to 274 cam can be ran!

Im confused by your statement....600hp is asking alot for good ole GM large ovals. The best Aluminum wont make 600hp? Your crazy! Your HP limitation is heavily weighted on the heads. Port matching is not going to do the trick...Larger valves and some port work bowl blending is what you want. Any decent aluminum head will already have larger valves, larger/smoother runner that will produce good HP numbers.

I have a rebuilt pair of 781s ready to go and I will happily sell them for $500 bux. LMK!

Please ask bad if he installed 2.19"/1.88" valves in them, then did a bowl-blend and dingle-berry port casting flash clean-up as well as cut the spring seats for bigger springs and better valve guide seals?

Much less if he was going to get his engine's CR up around 10 to 1 w/ a piston change so that he could use them like they would be meant to be used w/ a decent cam.

If he did, $500 is a steal.

And Ed, (aka, racer1320) used way modified -215's to get his porky '68 468 deep into the 10's.

And I am a fan of Ed's.

A local engine builder here built a 468 with 049's and it made over 680hp on the engine dyno.

Pretty much any true oval will do it. You'll need some chamber work on closed and semi-closed chamber pieces, but that's possible. Get all the figures together before you jump. If you're starting with a rough set of castings, it can cost a good bit more for surfacing, guides, etc. OTOH, I bought a pair of '702's with bronze K-liners and big valves last year for $300, by the time I get the chambers unshrouded and get springs installed, I'll be around $750 into 'em. That's CHEAP for ready-to-run heads.

And Paul, Ed did have a nice ride but what an A$$. He's managed to get himself banned from nearly every site he's signed up on. His engine combo wasn't that much different from what a lot of folks run, his Alf Weibe suspension was his Ace in the Hole, not the engine.

I really like the 702 heads that I run...Mine have 2.19s and 1.84s (yep) and have no port work done...The chambers are roughly 90ccs and I run them with old Speed pro 7053 pistons with a zero decked block...They actually make more power and are more responsive than the 990s that I took off...This engine makes 606 horsepower at 5500 rpm
