saginaw, casting 3925656, 68-79. so probably out of a late 2nd gen.

I found an old post here that indicates those numbers are for a Saginaw tranny.

so probably a super t-10? how do i find out what gear ratios?
does any one have a pic of how the linkages should go? mine are all discombobulated and what not. no idea how they are supposed to go.

no, a ST-10 is made by borg warner.

that trans has a 2.87 1st gear, not a performance trans.

pics... EDIT* 3-4 rod is backwards, should be sticking up from the shift fork stud.

^ whats up with that setup? the 3-4 lever is on upside down which is why the linkage rod is not adjusted right. LOL do not use that as a reference or you will have 3 and 4 reversed

i mocked it up for another member, but never realized it was on wrong. lol

i am assuming that even though it is not really a "performance transmission". that it will be alot better than my 3spd auto(currently running stock 305+headers,th350and 2.41:1s out back.) am i right
also i am taking a transmission class at my local community college this winter, our main lab project is to "rebuild" a transmission. is it possible to put a better gear set in this transmission?

if you can find a 2.54:1 1st gear gearset, put that in there. it will be the strongest gears you can put in there, if you can find them of course...

wouldn't a 2.54 be weaker than 2.87 or am i missing some thing

lower numerical gear = less torque loading. thats why you break stuff easier with 4.10's than 2.41's

exactly what i mean wouldn't the 2.54 gear set be slower?

no because it is a closer ratio than 2.87:1. in other words the gear spread is closer, therefore you don't lose as many RPM's between gears.

ahhhhhhhhhhh i see. how available would a gear set be. some thing i could find at a pick a part? i know of an old school speed shop in monroe maybe they can help me out.

very hard to find, as they were used least out of all the gearsets IIRC. really if you must know, its cheaper to find a super T-10 or muncie, as they already have decent gearsets in them, as well as being stronger.

i dont have near enough hp to break any thing. just looking to make my car a little more fun. nothing worse than a slow auto.
also i already have the transmission and almost all of the parts for the swap.
another question. does any one have some pics of how the clutch linkage should be set up? i didn't pull the transmission out of the car it came from and both of my cars are automatics,so i have no idea what i am doing.

Yeah, it sounds like a Saginaw. Easiest identifier is the 7-bolt gearbox cover. There should be a thread here about transmission ID by looks. Anyway, I have a 4-speed/305 and it's done just fine for me, save blowing the bearings.

With your rear gear and the 305 I'd leave the tranny gears as is.
