When I bought this car, the seller stated that the engine had come from a 1971 Nova (may have, but did it start there?). I decided to checkout the engine codes to verify. What I have found on the 'pad' is V1007CLM, which I believe means it was built at the Flint plant on October 7.
This block was used for the 73 Z and 76 Vette/Monte, as I have interpreted.
The partial Vin is really obscured by the Alt and the block has been painted. Can't really read it. What would be the best way to determine which one it is?

The date code cast into the back of the block should tell you if it is a 73 or 76 engine.
Also, try to get to the VIN on the engine. That would tell you a lot.

I was able to get a better look at the partial VIN on the pad and this is what I can read:
16S400
So, after some more research it would appear the engine is a 1976 L48 HP 185 4BBLS made in St Louis.
It is a Corvette engine because their production numbers began with 400001.
I am somewhat disappointed. I was hoping it was the 73 Z motor.
If I am wrong, please correct. Thanks.

So there is no CLM code on the front pad?The CLM code shows that it's a 1973 Camaro 350 245 horsepower engine with manual transmission and with A.I.R

Yes, there is. It is as my first post, as I have researched:
V=Flint
10=October
07=Seventh Day
CLM=Either the 73 Z as you have posted, or the 76 Vette/Monte Engine, both were a/t. My car was an orignal 4/speed, as I have the invoice from GM Media.
As I understand it, certain sbc's were used for a variety of models and years.
Again, if I am wrong or tell me how to I can prove otherwise, great, let me know. The engine has been bored .30 over and with the edelbrock high performance set-up, hookers and flowmaster all have helped the hp/performance up, but I tell you, she drives like a 245 hp plus, not a 185, as it apparently is.

Your not wrong. The partial vin nails the usage as 1976 vette.
