CrazyCamaro 08-22-2009, 07:24:36 PM I'm no professional, but that screams repro to me.
magz28 08-22-2009, 07:42:32 PM yeah, that is our gut too ...
vfitom2aol.com 08-22-2009, 10:22:19 PM Give me a straight on photo and clean the tag a bit. For a better look. And also the guys at Team Camaro are excellent at sniffin' the bad ones out.
Gary S 08-22-2009, 11:31:00 PM I don't see anything obviously wrong there. The tag looks OK to me. The rivets look OK too.
Anthony D Byram 08-23-2009, 02:06:48 AM From what I can see in the photo I agree with Gary, seem to have the correct rivets too. Looks like mine.
THNDER 08-23-2009, 02:37:27 AM I am not sure, but it appears that the rivets have not been pushed through.:bowtie:
ggtsvnv 08-23-2009, 03:54:16 AM what is the engine code in the VIN number? Starting 72 the VIN caried the engine code in it, if the engine code is for a Z then the car is a Z unless the VIN has been changed.
Twisted_Metal 08-23-2009, 04:38:10 AM Without looking up all the proper codes..... I don't see anything wrong with it.
The dirt around the edges looks like it has always been there and never removed, cleaned or replaced.
If it's a fake..... They got it to fit perfectly where the old one was and the cowl wasn't cleaned in between.
GREGS396 08-23-2009, 11:02:13 AM Trim Tag looks OK, but the rivets don't. As Mike stated, they are not pushed thru in the center. A 72 Z is easy to confirm, as it should have the "L" code within the VIN in the 5th digit spot.
magz28 08-23-2009, 11:04:00 AM It was really hard to get a good shot of the tag, without the present owner getting suspicious.
the rivets look like they do prior to being installed, not punched through.
the vin id's the car as a Z.
i found a few to compare too last night. there are a few digits that look different than the others we've seen ... like the 7, 5 2 ..... OR i can be going nuts looking at this thing
thank you all for the support on this !! :D
vfitom2aol.com 08-23-2009, 12:28:16 PM The rivet centers are not supposed to be that way...........
GREGS396 08-23-2009, 02:16:09 PM The VIN and Trim Tag could be off another car. Look for the blue sticker inside the drivers door, and compare the the VIN. Look for the other obvious stuff such as the 8k tach and the rear bumper guards.
Twisted_Metal 08-23-2009, 02:39:19 PM There's a partial VIN under the heater box..... A mismatch there will tell the story.
70 splitbumper 08-24-2009, 07:24:08 PM Is the partial tag "inside" the heater box? I mean do I have to remove mine to see the other vin#?
I just looked at my tag and it did not have the rivets totally pushed through. But with just a little nudge they fell out (the centers).
WS6 08-26-2009, 11:53:34 AM Yes the heater box (under hood has to be removed). There is another on top of the cowl. These won't be tags but hand stamped VIN derivatives. 10N100001, the model number is omitted from the derivative (unnecessary).
10N100001
1 - GM Divisional Code (1=Chevy, 2=Pontiac)
0 - Model year
N - Final assembly plant
100001 - Last 6 digits of VIN serial number)

PS-If they are not there then be suspicious. Contrary to what some say, they are supposed to be there and absence can prove criminal activity. Someone deliberately removed them to deceive.
moehoward 08-26-2009, 09:54:01 PM Is that Vin under the black plastic cowl screen ?
