View Full Version : Sand blasting
mikey_350 08-10-2009, 01:46:45 PM I've been trying to sandblast the bottom of my car here today, but the humidity is like 60, and after about 2 minutes, water will start to come outa the gun, plug up with mud, and i have to take it all apart and clean it, drain the compresser ( 12.5 CFM with a 60 gallon tank ) and try it all over again. Is there any way i can get this to work better?
When i drain the tank, hardly anything comes out really, so why is it coming out the hose so bad?
Any tips would be greatly appreciated, i gotta get the bottom of the car done today too, i cant do it for another few weeks if i dont....
Kamikaze 08-10-2009, 01:51:44 PM You should have a water trap / filter on the outlet of your compressor and another one at the inlet to the sand blaster.
I also go a bit further and have one of the disposable water trap balls at the inlet of my gun.
If your compressor is large enough, you should get an automatic drain that opens to release the water once every few cycles of the compressor. IF you don't have one, I suggest that you open and drain the water out of the compressor once every 10-15 minutes.
I know it's a P.I.A. but it is less a hassle then stopping to clear out the gun!

ohh i know, i have been draining it bout every 5 minutes, and i did buy a water trap, but the thing leaked so i didnt bother using it, and as soon as i hooked it up, i could just see the pellets turn from blue to pink from the moisture...
i wish our portable compresser was working, i could have the car done in a half hour, i might just try my pressure sand blaster instead of my syphon feed guns,
what about wet sand blasting?? i tried it on an air compreser tank we had, and then i let it dry ( our course it immediantly formed surface rust) then about 5 months later ( today) after it sat through many rains, i went over it with 100 grit paper and the rust came right off and was shiny metal. But would it be a good idea to do to the bottom of my car?
Kamikaze 08-10-2009, 02:05:21 PM I think you will get mor frustrated when you go back and have to hand sand off the surface rust on the nooks and crannies of the floorpan...
Why not stop and get the right equipment together so you can do the job fast and effectively the first time?
76_TypeLT 08-10-2009, 02:26:35 PM What kind of sand blasting unit are you using? I sand blasted using an Eastwood unit and I never had any clogging issues in Houston humidity, FWIW.
tom3 08-10-2009, 02:38:51 PM This works for me, cold water and a separator at the lower air output.
Picture is worth a thousand words maybe.

mikey_350 08-11-2009, 01:26:37 AM well despite having troubles with most of my sand blasters, i still carried on, and figure one of them out, and tried a bunch of things.
The only sand blaster i could get to work today was my dad's old syphon feed sears sand blaster!, he used it to completely sand blast two semis back in the day, and once we figured out it couldnt be over feed, and made a jug to feed it right, and moved the compresser outside, it worked awesome!, drain the tank every 20 minutes, be able to do about 1 square foot in that time.
I brought my friend in from town, and he helped me most of the day ( the most help i have got since i started my project) and i just got in... so 14 hours of messing around, and trouble shooting and its still not done.
Tommorow i should be done though, i wont be finishing it, my freind will be, since i have to work tommorow. What a day, i am all dry, pitted, and tired.

I have used this same set-up. (I used an ols cooler and ice water) my a/c seems to collect more water than anything else I have ever used. don't know why and a new one is just not in the budget yet so I make do!
