I've been out of the loop for awhile, but have begun looking around for a nice '74 Z. There is a local car that I went to check out a couple days ago.

I've just started researching these models and not a ton of info is out there. I have searched here and have accumulated some knowledge:). I would like opinions from you all on the numbers I recorded.

It's a 2 owner original paint with 25k miles (and I believe that to be accurate). The intake (Edelbrock), carb (Holley) & air cleaner (aftermarket chrome open element) have been changed. The distributor is now an MSD. The exhaust manifolds have been swapped for headers, but the AIR tubes have been welded into the header tubes and the rest of the system in intact. There is also an N.O.S. system plumbed in that has never been used. Shocks have been changed to Koni's. The battery has been moved to the trunk and the original tray is still under the hood. The original wheels along with the spare are gone. The first owner did the above mods and the 2nd owner (has had it about 4 years) installed F&R spoilers and a local graphics design knockoff (all black) of the D88 stripe option. It has the LT option, 4-speed, PS, A/C, AM/FM, rear speaker (now a twin setup) & rear defrost.

Here are the #'s I took down:

VIN: 1S87T4N17xxxx

Trim:
ST74 1FS87 N 160050
776 A51 64 B
02C Z28 BLK
440879

Eng: V0204CLJ - the partial VIN is on the block pad.
Trans: P4S06A - you can see the last 7 digits of the VIN
Axle: CM C 059 2 G
Radiator tag: LN

There was some dealer papers. No window sticker or purchase order. The owners manual & warranty books were there but no POP. Were POP's still in use for 1974?

My other ? is that most of the info I've read indicates '74 4-speed Z's came with 3:73 gears. Do the 3:42 gears in this car relate to the wide ratio Muncie and AC or was 3:42 available as an option?

I'm way more familiar with 1st gens and am interested in how these numbers line up with other '74's that may be in a data base. Any input is appreciated.

I thought the 3.42 came with the auto, and the 3.73 came with the 4spd.
My 74 Z28, 3.73 with 4spd stock.

Very true ... but 4 spd A/C equipped cars got the 3.42's from the factory. At least thats my understanding.

so you didn't spin the ac compressor into oblivion in first gear launch( not that it all that earth shattering).

here is from the 73 Assembly manual (maybe someone in the vast 74 community can find this page in the 74 manual) if you look at the 3.417(3.42) ratio it has M20 AND M21 trans WITH the F60 15 tires which were only available on the Z 28. http://i255.photobucket.com/albums/hh155/stinsonz/speedogear.jpg
