Mark80Z28 06-05-2009, 06:25:01 PM It's the sales invoice that you can get. I've never heard of being able to order your build sheet.

April81Z28 06-05-2009, 06:26:34 PM I don't think you can get a copy of your build sheet from GM. They were put in the cars and were supposed to be tossed as they rolled down the line.
If you have a later second gen, you can get a copy of the invoice - but it'll cost you $50 or so.

+1
The last one I got was $50.
WS6 06-05-2009, 10:06:14 PM The build sheet was an assembly line instruction sheet for use by workers building the cars. They cannot re-create it. They were never intended to ship with the car, some workers were lazy so instead of tearing it off the part and throwing it in the trash, they stuffed somewhere in the car or left it attached to the parts assembly and if that got covered over it was never removed.
Copies of invoices are available for 1977 and up models. Also any cars sold or built in Canada have shipping records available from Vintage Vehicle Services - GM of Canada from which they can recreate of record of the car BUT no build sheets.
You make no mention of what year vehicle you have? If its prior to 1977 there is nothing available. All those records were never kept due to the cost of keeping such records. About the only ones you can find info on are Corvettes and that info is available from the Nat'l Corvette Museum. As with the NCM, Vintage Vehicle Service or copies of invoices from 1977 on, there is a fee payable in advance for the service.
So in a nutshell, no one can give you a build sheet. Its either found in the car or its gone for ever.
The General Motors Dealer Invoice service is now being coordinated and managed by Allied Vaughn, a tier one supplier of GM. As of March 1, 2005, the cost for this service is $50 per invoice. Download the form for more information.

flowjoe 06-05-2009, 10:38:00 PM One can't expect GM or anyone else to dig through the records, make a copy and then mail something like an invoice for free. Assuming that your car is
'77 and up, $50 would be a steal to determine its true "as built" condition.
If your car is pre '77 then welcome to the world the rest of us live in....;)
steveo_80z28_nj 07-02-2009, 11:58:54 AM I have one place left to look when I drop my tank...after that if I don't find a readable copy of the build sheet I'll probably just order the invoice.
Thanks for the info...

howie 07-02-2009, 11:52:34 PM i found one on the top of the driver side inner front fender and one on top of the fuel tank. i have two sheets for one car.
77RS 07-04-2009, 10:00:49 AM Here's a pic of the dealer invoice for my '77 RS. It doesn't come from GM. A company called Allied Vaughn handles the GM archives. It's a copy of the original GM invoice. It was 50 bucks, but hey, it was worth it for me to get the info since I didn't have a build sheet. That's a drop in the bucket comapred to the money we spend on our cars :D A tank of gas costs nearly that much. This will last a lot longer lol
