View Full Version : How do I paint those cool 70-73 racing stripes on my car?
Slayn 11-04-2003, 09:02:00 PM Basically my car looks like absolute crap. Yet I cannot come even close to afford a paint job. Therefore I am buying massive amounts of spraypaint from Kragen and panting all the screwed up parts of my car. Then I decided... HEY! I am screwing with my car anyway, why not add stripes! So I am going to add those cool stripes across the hood and trunk lid. Problem is, how do I do it? Is there a stencil kit I can get?
earlysecond 11-04-2003, 10:51:00 PM Slayn,
The stencil kit costs more than 2 cases of spray bombs! It is about $55. The kit I got was not that great either. The only part that the kit is a must for is the raduis(s) That go on the header. Given the fact that the header on your car is not the same, it may be even more difficult. Since you are only "messing around" with the paint why not do it simply, just paint the main body of the stripes and not the thinner stripes on the outside? This would be easier and you could lay it out with decent cheap tape. I hope that you will not take my advice as an insult. The other option would be to spend a couple of hundred bucks and have someone paint it (garage job) or if you have air or access to air, get a cheap gun and spray it yourself. You'll be stripping the whole thing someday anyway. If you try a paint job when all you really care is that it is one color and not rusted, you will get some great practice for the day when you want a good paint job. My 2 cents and it is worth less than that.
Slayn 11-04-2003, 11:06:00 PM Sounds good to me, I am spending $2.50 for spray paint, a $55 stencil is way out of the question. I am going to experiment on my trunk lid. Mine has a hole in it, and I have one to replace it, I just need to paint it and stick it on. Thanks! Oh yeah just wondering, abot how wide are the stripes each? And how wide do you think the spacing between the two stripes is in the middle? If it goes well, I am sure I can tape the little outline stripes as well.
earlysecond 11-05-2003, 08:33:00 AM on the trunk lid the stripes are 13.75 wide with 6" between them. The front is a different story as on the hood the stripes widen as they go from the front of the hood to the windsheild. Follow the lines on your hood. The stripes up front also have 6" between them.
Slayn 11-05-2003, 11:01:00 AM Hmmm, thats interesting, thanks. I guess I will start with the trunk and try to get it right. So if the hood stripes differ in size, is it the same size as the trunk stripes ( 13.75 ) on the front of the hood or does it get to be the same size near the windshield?

Since your car is white (like mine) you can do what I did: paint the stripes first (without the outline stripe), then get a roll of white 1/4 inch wide pinstripe tape and stick it on over the painted stripe, spaced 1/4 inch in from the edges. To see how it came out, click the camera icon above.
Slayn 11-05-2003, 11:59:00 AM Oh cool that works out great. Where do I get that?
Damn, how am I also going to get the front of the stripes on the hood to curve like that, heh. Ooo, this projects going to be bigger then I thought.... fun. >: )

That70sCar 11-05-2003, 12:12:00 PM I got mine at Autozone, but any parts store should carry it. A 40 foot roll was enough to do all the stripes and cost $4.00. The pinstripe material is very flexible, so it's no problem making the curves. To make the curves in the masking tape, just stick the tape onto a flat surface and trace around a round object with an exacto knife (I used a paint can). Good Luck!
Slayn 11-05-2003, 07:00:00 PM Sweet, got some 1/4 inch black pin stripes and a bunch of paint. Painted the trunk lid white ( body color ), but didnt add the stripes yet. I need to drill holes in the trunk lid to add the center spoiler, and I figured it would be best to paint the stripes on when the thing was attached, lest I misalign the stripes separately. So, any more tips before I continue this tomarrow?
If you guys can just tell me how wide the base of the stripes at the very front of the car is, that would be cool. I could easily go from there.

That70sCar 11-05-2003, 09:26:00 PM Here is a post with the measurements from COPO's web site. It has the numbers from the 73 assembly manual, but you should be able to use them for your car:

Slayn 11-07-2003, 11:03:00 PM Put some tape on so I could do some measurements, took the tape off, and took 2 layers of paint with it. Guess I wont use that electrical tape again....
Slayn 11-08-2003, 07:45:00 PM Alright, painted the hood, woohoo! Dont know how it looks yet, its drying in the garage, the car still covered in newspaper. Now tomarrow ( or later tonight, I cant wait hehe ) I am going to add the pin stripes. I hope I can make the curve without any problem...
