i just bought a car that has 295's on it, the tires fit decently under the car on the unknown rims. i have a pair of weld prostars that are 4.5(?) inch back spacing. do you think that the tires will work on the rim? and do you think it will fit under the car?

I've got 295/50/15's on 15X8 vintage ralleys with 4.5 back spacing and they fit fine, whole tire inside fender.

I had 295/50/15's on the back of mine before the switch to the 17's..I threw a couple of pictures of the 295's on a Weld Draglites.
They are on the 2nd page of picts under the "70 Camaro" link.
They are just inside the wheel well lip.
