I bought a 74 Z a few months back that I am looking to loose some weight off of. The power steering pump is off the car, and the previous owner left the power steering box on the car and loped the line. The front suspension is stock. Steering is slightly tough so I would also like to ease up the steering a bit to.
Is there a good rack and pinion out there for the second gen cars that don't require a set of tubular control arms. If not is there a alternative steering box that I can use?

No rack and pinion is available for the stock subframe. If you are willing to $wap $ubframes then a company called Martz makes one for 2gens with all the tricks (coil overs, rack and pinion, etc.).
Check out Flaming River for alternative steering boxes. They have a light weight manual box that fits 2gens.

Some guys are using the mid-eighties S10 manual steering boxes, I think.
I've got nearly 11" of tire up front, so I don't even think about manual steering. http://www.nastyz28.com/ubb/smile.gif

What is the story on the S10 box? I had a guy telling me that last night. What year, how is the installation? This guy tells me its a direct bolt in?!?

do some searches on this. I used the 88 IROC box. It is 12:1 and nice and tight feel. It bolts right in place but you do need an adapter rag joint and hose fitting adapters - I bought the kit from Lee Mfg for $65. But search this section cause there are lots of options and alternatives.

I used a steering box from an 85 S10 and a tilt column from an 81 Z28. It was a bolt in. But I hope you have skinny tires.

I wouldn't need the set up to keep it power, the current setup is a hose looped on the gear box. I want to keep it manual.
So the S10 manual box sounds pretty appealing. I have 26x4.5 MT Frontrunners on it.
