View Full Version : for those running 16x8 front wheels
engine 10-13-2003, 06:13:00 PM I have 16x8 torq thrust II's. All are the same back space of 4" and -11mm offset. These are the specs recommended by American Racing in their application guide. Now they don't mention what tire sizes can be run on front or back. I also can't find their phone number anywhere on the site. What is the largest tire that can be put on the front, obviously without rubbing? Right now I have 235/60/15 and I get a very slight contact on the right inner fender, on right turns. So slight that you can barely notice. I've calculated that a 245/50/16 would be about a little less than 1/2" shorter, and should yeild no problems. Suggestions? Anyone have the AR phone #?

71camaro383 10-13-2003, 06:27:00 PM i am running 245/50/16s on the front on a 16*7 with no problems and the front is lowered 2 in.
engine 10-13-2003, 06:35:00 PM Nice car. What sizes are you running in the rear? I'm looking to go with 255/50/16. What tires are those? I'm thinking about the Kumho 712. They are inexpensive and I've read a lot of good reviews about them.
71camaro383 10-13-2003, 06:40:00 PM i have 17*8 in the back with 255/50/17s. I wanted something to fill up the rear wheel well a little more. the 16s are limited in sizes but i did have at on time a 275/50/16 on the back and it looked pretty good but you cant get them anymore.I have 255/50/16 drag radials on 16*8 i use at the track occasionally but the 17s on back in my opinion look better. The tires are dunlop re730s and grip excellent.
The Champ 10-13-2003, 09:33:00 PM We have 16x8 Centerlines with 5" BS and a 2" drop up front.
Mounted up a set of 245/50/16's on the front, but never drove the car because of extremely tight clearance.
Mounted up a set of 225/50/16's and that's what we run.
My recommendation would be more BS on the front than 4" on a 16x8. On the rear, 4" BS should allow a 245/50 without problems. That is what we run on the rear with 5" BS, but there is plenty of clearance.

Mountaineer 10-15-2003, 07:42:00 AM I just copped a set of S10 Xtreme wheels with 225/55/16 ZR Bridgestone Potenzas on them, they look great on my '81. Now I definately can't get my floor jack under it!

invhtrods 10-16-2003, 06:01:00 PM Am I correct in assuming that 16x8's with 5" of backspacing will fit 2nd gen Camaro's without clearance problems(Front and Rear)? I still have stock ride height on my 80. If needed I can space the rears out with spacers.
I found a set of 4 wheels with tires in my price range but want to be sure they will fit.
Please reply ASAP...Don't wanna miss the deal.
Thanks,

Does this mean that the wheel was too tight in there, that's why you didn't drive it? The 225/55 has the same height as the 245/50 @ 25.7". My 235/60/15 is 26.1" high. Would you recommend going with the 225/50/16 which is 24.9" high?
Someone on this board sent me pic's of his 70-73 with the same exact rims on it that I have, but with 235/50/16 tires all around. The car looks pretty good with this setup. He said that he has no rubbing problems. I just forgot who sent them because it was about a year ago.
The Champ 10-16-2003, 09:30:00 PM Our problem was the clearance (or lack thereof) by the fender lip with the 245's on a lowered car with the 5" BS.
There was room on the inside.
I would have considered some 225/55/16's but they weren't available in a matching tire.
If you are getting the TT's with 4" BS, I think the 235/50/16's all the way around would work.
I just don't know if you could get a 245/50 on the front with only 4" BS.
CamaroMan79 10-16-2003, 09:42:00 PM I thought the re730's are Bridgestones? Maybe im wrong

71camaro383 10-16-2003, 11:41:00 PM sorry,i meant bridgestone.
engine 10-17-2003, 04:51:00 PM Yeah, 235/50/16 are not available in the tires I want (Kumho 712's) Onlt like 2-3 manufacturers make 235's. I think I'll try the 225/55's. Thanks.
