You probably have gas in the oil. Bad ring seal, intake manifold seal, or just a really rich mixture. If you have stock jets in the carb try adjusting the idle mixture to the highest vacuum reading on a good vacuum gauge. Oh yea - change the oil too, that gas might be thinning out your oil.

Got a mehanical fuel pump? The diaphram goes bad and gas will leak in to the crankcase from there.

usually with a rich mixture, gas will get into your oil through blowby. Mine does that. Also if your engine sits for a while (if you don't start it for long periods of itme like I do) vapors will get in there. If you run the engine more often and keep the oil hot, you'll keep the gas out. Just chanage it more often.

Ditto, check the fuel pump. Change the oil as well, gas is a poor lube.

My '71 Chevelle did that with a very rich running, brand new, vac secondary Holley. I tried everything to lean it out but could'nt. I chunked the Holley for a rebuilt Q-Jet and the problem was solved. (Picked-up .6 tenths in the 1/8th mile also http://www.nastyz28.com/ubb/wink.gif

It's probably your fuel pump.
Dwayne your Holley problem may have been your float level,or bad needle and seat.

had a prob with crappy mixture on my engine that always was kept tuned.
turned out to be the pump, just like everyone is saying.
Mine was backwards, though. The oil poisoned the gas. Turned it brown. That's how I figured it out.
