View Full Version : 1970 big block camaro
blackbird 01-15-2009, 03:25:18 PM I bought this 1970 396 bbc camaro last fall, the car seemed real nice, nice paint, decent interior, clean engine bay. When I looked at car I checked frt floor pan, it looked decent and had been oiled, the trunk floor had been patched but looked decent otherwise, I figured "no big deal, i'll just throw a trunk patch panel on it, after all, how bad can it be with frt pans in good shape". After removing rear end, springs, fuel tank, and exhaust I found frame rails were rotten and left rear frame rail was rusted completely through behind rear shackle mount. After poking around further both frt of rear frame rails had been filled with bondo!!! Off to NPD i went to purchase a complete trunk floor, trunk drop offs, and both rear complete frame rails. I am about half way through this project and thought I would share some pic's.
Here are pics of car after I bought it, It had new rear quarters, frt fenders (inner also), new carpet, headliner, seats redone, and a nice running 396 with a turbo 350.

blackbird 01-15-2009, 03:35:24 PM Pics of trunk foor removal
Left side rear frame rail was rotted , frame rail had seperated in rear, which caused rail to raise up contacting floor pan, previous owner corrected this by installing air shocks with seperate lines and pumping left side up harder to level rear of car!!

BTTB71SS 01-15-2009, 03:36:16 PM I know the feeling on seeing bondo to repair a frame rail...What were these people thinking is what i want to know....
Looks like a real nice car from the pic's too bad about the repairs but at least you will know that it was done right now.

krabben1 01-15-2009, 05:03:24 PM Thats amazing how good a car can look on the outside.Looks like you got it under control.
blackbird 01-16-2009, 08:51:45 AM Replaced right rear inner whl well (outer section). This is real tough to do without removing the new quarters. I could not find any replacement inner section of whl wells so i had to make templates out of construction paper, then cut out rusty metal and but weld in new metal. I didn't want to burn the paint on the quarters by welding to inner whl well so I used body panel adhesive to glue inner to quarter.

Looks like a real nice car from the pic's too bad about the repairs but at least you will know that it was done right now.
They were thinking, " what is the least I can do to make this look nice so I can get it off of my hands" It's funny how you start working on a car and when you find more wrong than you want to fix you just fix what you really wanted to do in the first place and then send it down the road. The next person gets it and finds more problems but at least half of it has already been done for them. Just fix it right the first time and you should end up with a nice car.

Exactly!! They already had quarters, tailpan off, I can't imagine how easy these repairs would be if done then. This whole job has to be done in steps, after trunk floor and frame rails are removed I have to put trunk floor and trunk dropoffs in, then install frame rails next, Then to top everything off the complete trunk floor i got from NPD fits a 1970 to 1973 Camaro, it has a different hump in it at frt of floor so I will have to section new floor around old floor hump section to make it correct.

Not bad, wheel well is glued to quarter panel wheel well lip only, the inside edge of inner wheel well is plug welded in.
blackbird 01-16-2009, 02:17:17 PM This is where it gets really ugly, these pics are the left whl well area, I had counted 6 patches that were slapped hastily in the rear left whl well area where the whl whl meets the rocker area, once I removed all the patches there was a hole big enough to lose a small pet through! I first rebuilt the sheet metal behind the drivers door that was directly above the rocker area on the inside of car, cut out many templates and but welded everything. I then replaced the inner wheel tub, then re built the frt of the whl tub to rocker area.

I'm doing some work to the trunk floor of my car and WAS thinking about getting a trunk pan.....If thats the only repo pan there making I'll pass!
I wonder if there's a trunk pan for a 70' Anybody know?

Thanks, I kinda like the looks of this style of rally wheel with the flat center cap, its not original, but because this car is a non numbers matching, nothing special car I can mix it up a bit and make a fun car to drive. I eventually want to convert this car into a manual trans setup.
Here are some pics of the rear frame end cap that was rusted out, I wanted to replace this piece but could not find it offered anywhere.

blackbird 01-22-2009, 10:49:20 AM Got the Shock tower sheet metal butt welded in, sure wish i could have replaced trunk floor as one piece, oh well, I should be happy these pans are available at all, even if they aren' perfect.
I also have test fitted rear left frame rail, man was it off, with frame rail tight against floor pan to frt of shock towers the rear frame to end cap was 3 inches too high!! If I lowered frame at rear to fit there was a 1/4 gap between rail and floor pan at frt, I stared at this for at least 1 hr then made a slice in frame just forward of snubber mount holes, then I put frame in place and jacked it up with a piece of wood, the frame fit perfect, while in place I welded the slice up to keep the proper shape. I was very worried this would happen using Taiwan parts, But its still a lot better than nothing.

blackbird 02-10-2009, 09:06:50 AM Ive had a chance to work on this project lately and took some Pic's of my progress, I have both frame rails totally removed from floor pan, and have cleaned pans to get ready for a coat of Zero rust.

BondoSpecial 02-10-2009, 09:24:08 AM Nice work. Any way to make the pics bigger? They are about 2" wide on a 1600x1200 resolution screen
ParkerRS 02-10-2009, 11:25:48 AM Excellent fab work, especially without damaging the paint. Keep up the good work and pics, it's all worth it in the end. You'll have a solid car that you can play with for years to come without worry. The framerail repair is also your best move for stability and peace of mind, especially when you lay into that big block.
Yes that is the only trunk floor available. The 70 was a one year only trunk floor design along with the panel between the trunk and back seat. In 71 they changed it and placed a vapor canister in this area. More 71-73s out there so I would guess that's the reason for the pan being geared for them as the 70 only pan wouldn't have as large of a market. The full trunk pan hasn't been avaiable for the second gen. until this past year anyway, they still may do the 70 later but i Doubt it.

Thanks Tommy,
Thats great info about the trunk floor. Once I get the rear sheet metal work done I am going to add Global West Subframe connectors and solid mounts, then I can start on the 4 speed conversion, hopefully all in time for late spring.
ParkerRS 02-10-2009, 12:13:03 PM As long as your doing all the cutting and welding underneath, have you thought about the DSE frame connectors? They weld into the floors and are a lot lower profile than the others.

White81Z 02-10-2009, 07:44:47 PM I wonder if there's a trunk pan for a 70' Anybody know?
The 1970 only one piece trunk floor is not reproduced. It's a lot cheaper to reproduce a piece that is used for 4 years then to make a one year only full trunk floor.

blackbird 02-18-2009, 08:58:17 AM Well, I got the frame rails welded in, about 80 plug welds later. Next step is to install the trunk dropoffs, I will have to use panel adhesive to glue dropoffs to quarter panel at bottom area of dropoffs, then will plug weld where dropoffs meet floor pan.

patpkk 02-18-2009, 07:26:47 PM Good work. Man do I have plenty of questions for you. Me and may son are starting our 70Z28 soon when things warm up. We bought both the full floor and then the transition panel from Dynacorn. I sure would be intereted in how you sectioned yours to fit.
Did you remove the rails to install full trunk floor? I was going to take out my tail pannel and slide it in that way.
Pat.

Thanks, First thing I did was cut out old floor pan, I cut out old pan just above where drain grooves are stamped in pan side to side. Next I sectioned in both corners that cover shock towers from Dynacorn pan, then I put rear of Dynacorn pan against tailpanel, then raised Dynacorn panel up to meet original pan, I scribed a mark where pans overlapped and left about 1/8 overlap on the Dynacorn pan, I then stepped the Dynacorn pan to fit flush with original pan section and this was later plug welded.
If my frame rails weren't rotten I would have replaced trunk pan through tail section. If you are replacing trunk drop offs from Dynacorn, plan on a little bending and tweaking to get them to fit properly. I would imagine you could leave the drop offs loosely in place and just slide the pan in between them, then weld every thing together before welding tail panel back on.
One more thing, spot weld cutters suck, these fancy minature holesaws make swiss cheese of everything, the trunk pan is spot welded about every 3 inches to frame rails, what I found that worked the best, use a cut off wheel to cut sheet metal around each spot weld, leave around a 2 inch square around spot weld, then peel up sheet metal to spot weld and just give it a twist with plyers, the spot weld will pop off leaving a small nub to grind down
One of the best things I did was found an excellent body shop forum, it covers all aspects of body work from sheet metal work, rust repair, body and paint, the form is autobodystore.com.
patpkk 02-19-2009, 05:06:21 PM Great tips. Do you mind telling me where about you are in Michigan. I would understand if you did not want to tell me.

blackbird 02-24-2009, 09:09:04 AM Ok, so I locked myself in the garage all weekend, got both rear of wheel tubs replaced where they were rotten, had to wait to do this last because this area of missing metal gave me a spot to slide trunk drop offs in. I also welded new metal where inner tub meets floor pan.
It started like this

This picure is of the lower wheel well lip that someone sliced and filled with bondo.

I replaced the sliced portion of the metal lip, I also repaired some body work on the lower rear rocker, then blended in these areas and re cleared the complete door, and lower portion of quarter directly behind lower door area.

blackbird 03-30-2009, 09:28:48 AM Then I replaced both scratched door glass, and adjusted glass per a sticky I found on this site, What a help this site has been!!

Next was a biggy, I swapped the turbo 350 trans over to a muncie m20 manual trans, kind of a PITA hooking up all the pedals and linkages, I need smaller hands.

I installed the shifter hump, shifter, boot and trim besel and carpet installed.

Chevrolaine 03-30-2009, 10:14:31 AM You been busy!! Won't be long til your cruising!:bowtie:
bparrishlvx 04-05-2009, 01:39:37 AM Really nice job!!!! Unreal doing all that work on a set of jack stands! Can't wait to see pics of it finished.
RedZ28 04-07-2009, 11:12:45 PM Nice car Roy. Man, that's some nice work with the welder.
blackbird 04-08-2009, 09:42:54 AM Ok Ive got some updates, I just got the flowmaster exhaust system installed, it was a PITA since I bought the system used and was in a few pieces when I got it. I really don't care for the tailpipes showing along the rear of the quarter panel so I painted the tailpipes low gloss black.

http://i491.photobucket.com/albums/rr272/roys248/DSC00623.jpg
I also got the rear end done and installed, I had a good friend set up a 3:73 gear, then I replaced whl cylinders , park brake cables and all brakes and hardware, after installing rear end I did find I mounted brake hose in the wrong spot, it needs to be mounted using a upper rear end cover bolt, I also have to re route the brake lines on the axle tubes differently, the way they are now I will have some clearance issues.
http://i491.photobucket.com/albums/rr272/roys248/DSC00614.jpg
I also got the radio and speakers installed, I originally wanted a original radio and speakers to look old school, but could not find any priced right, since the dash was already cut I decided to install a new Pioneer with Sony rear speakers, I may replace lower dash later, and install the original style radio and spaekers later.

This pic shows tail panel after re painting, also installed new bumper. My buddy thinks I should paint tail panel semi gloss black since this is how SS cars with a big block were, I don't know what it would look like with the white stripes though, the factory SS cars all seemed to be a solid color when the tail panels were black.

Toy71Camaro 04-08-2009, 01:08:05 PM WOW! Awesome job you have done... in your garage to boot.
68400BIRD 04-08-2009, 01:54:26 PM I am very impressed and amazed at all of the work that you have done around that great paint job with out doing any outside damage.
blackbird 07-29-2009, 09:30:42 AM Well, I haven't posted anything in a while, I have been driving the car, lots of fun till I found out I was using 5 qts of oil in 400 miles. I didn't want to rebuild a motor in the middle of cruising season, but had to do it. Had a 396 machined up with forged trw 9.2 pistons, steel crank, and installed a Procharger p600b. I have drove the car 2 times with fresh engine, lots of fun and not using oil! Here's some pics.

blackbird 07-30-2009, 11:41:12 AM very nice how much whp its kicking out?
Not sure yet, I ve been tuning it, it makes about 9psi at 6200rpm, I'm shooting for 450 to 500 hp @ crank. I need to get it to a chassis dyno once engine is broke in.
blackbird 07-30-2009, 11:42:38 AM Nice car! What part of MI are you from?
Thanks, from Oxford Mi, about 35 miles north of Detroit.
Chris77Z28 09-16-2009, 05:12:58 PM Just saw this thread for the first time today. VERY impressed with what I see. GREAT JOB!!!!!!!!!
vegafish33 09-16-2009, 05:26:54 PM Great Work! and super nice car man! I have a question for you guys. Is there a big difference between having the air compressed before the carburetor and after? I noticed this one has it enter the carb compressed whereas on roots style blowers there before. Obviously theres tuning differences but anything else?
1980z28fromhell 09-16-2009, 05:51:09 PM nice car bud .. man you got boned on that car but you did a great job .. i would have back halved it myself ...

With the air compressed before the carb, you need a "blow through" carb - it has some particular modifications done to it so it operates under pressure vice under vacuum like a normal carb does...
LSXZ28 09-16-2009, 06:53:49 PM Sweet ride!! I would guess it makes a little more than what you're shooting for ;)
blackbird 05-14-2010, 10:59:27 AM I haven't posted on hear in ages, decided it was time to replace the dash pad and door panels. I have tried finding a factory pad and after months of watching E bay and Craigslist I gave up and bought an OER. Hopefully with the instructions from I recieved from Rick on this site, the dash pad install will go smoothly.
Here are some pictures of the original pad, and after removal.

LtRsZ 05-14-2010, 12:27:16 PM Looks great. I got a question on the wheel wells you installed. How did you get the outers off? Were they not welded to the qtrs. at the wheel well lips? Also the 70 cars look to have an upper sail/b-pillar support that 71-73 cars don't have. It is a vertical support welded to the upper outer wheel house that travels up inside the qtr.
SSLX76 05-14-2010, 08:37:44 PM Great work with the rust, I have just bought a 1970 Z car and Im waiting to get it into a container to ship back to Australia, I had my brother check it in L/A and the guy I bought it from assures me its a good thing and he came across as a good guy, I would have a melt down if I got it here and it had the same problems as you found, Love the car and the color, Cant wait to go cruising in mine when it gets here as there is very few 2nd gen camaros here, all 1st gen, Like I said just love your car, Cheers Andrew.
liquidmagnum 05-14-2010, 09:05:48 PM what was wrong with the old dash?

blackbird 05-17-2010, 10:45:41 AM Looks great. I got a question on the wheel wells you installed. How did you get the outers off? Were they not welded to the qtrs. at the wheel well lips? The quarters were replaced previously and were not welded to the wheel wells.
blackbird 05-17-2010, 10:50:58 AM what was wrong with the old dash?
The old dash was severly warped at the frt windshield edge, pics don't really show this, also someone painted the dash gloss black!
blackbird 06-02-2010, 09:47:57 AM Well, I got the interior back together, went better than I thought it would.
