I'm thinking a camaro with a rennspeed motor and suspension. So probably a 4 wheel drive air cooled motor!

Lets not get ahead of ourselves now! I've thrown around the idea of a building a 2nd Gen AWD T/A with 997 GT3 drivetrain but this isn't quite that extreme by any means!

In The Begining
It started in 2005 with the discovery and acquisition of this über Camaro, returning it to its state of birth.
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3085/3115709870_9e25a2ab81.jpg
Plentiful power and copious wheel spin... the power delivered via its 6-speed wasn't an issue.
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3122/3114882763_6bc73829b6.jpg
Beneath the shiny GM Torch Red and frighteningly loud exhaust an ancient artifact was found; the original suspension, YES everything, augmented by even more ancient technology: air shocks!
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3285/3114932161_f926f688b6.jpg
Something had to be done... surely this beautiful machine was capable of handling the twistys as well as it flattened the straights.

The Z28 rode through 2006 unchanged. - Through 2007 its deficiencies were fully realized as its 4th Gen brethren and European rivals made quick work of it in the turns. :o This was unacceptable, and so the idea was cast, this Camaros handling would outshine its looks; as well as its rivals, and stop as quickly as it could go.

Hours upon hours of searching the depths of the intra-web and NastyZ28 finally brought about some inspiration:

Countless hours of research in my virtual home: The Suspension, Wheels & Brakes section resolved hundreds of questions as to what our 2nd Gens really demand. Lists were made, measurements taken, and parts ordered from every corner of the earth, Italy, Greece, Australia, Japan, Germany & beyond.
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3031/3115807758_c65dc0c8a5.jpg
What followed was the massive acquisition of parts. So much for a budget. :p

December 14th 2008
The Camaro emerged into a rainy Mid-West Sunday morning ready for a drive.
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3101/3123039435_fdc7bd99f7_o.jpg
After loading a few hundred pounds of Z06 rotors/calipers; G-Braces, control arms, an array of solid bushings and other items the Z28 was ready for take off.

3hrs later...
The Z28 reached its destination and the wrenching began immediately. Extracted Rear End with Hotchkis leafs. (note Herb Adams mod recently performed)

C5/C6 is the only way to go!
I'm going to run a C5 Master Cylinder similar to NastyZ member nx74ls6 running the C6 Z06 rotors and calipers all the way around. It worked excellently for him so I'm hoping for the same.

Prop valve is a Polished SSBC adjustable with gauge. Woulda gone for black but I got a deal!

I'll be running the C5 Z06 calipers all the way around with C6 Z06 14" Rotors in front(aka hybrid with C5 caliper), C6 Z51 13" Rotors in rear, & C6 Z51 caliper abutments/brackets all the way around.

Only once I had intricately cleaned BOTH of them did I realize that the drivers side had a oblonged lower ball joint hole not fit for re-installation.... back to the drawing board I guess!

December 24th & 25th 2008 - Official Camaro Holiday + Time to figure out exactly which spindles interchange with mine, 1980-1981 F-Bodies seem like the best bet so I made a few phone calls.

December 26th 2008 - 1981 Esprit Firebird was located through a buddy! Roughly 30,000-40,000 miles on the clock, so road wear was minimal. It had sat in a field since 1995; the trunk pan was shot but the rest was grade A+.
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3510/3177240121_a09a236ec2_o.jpg

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3081/3177240287_f7c1838204_o.jpg
A short time later I had 1 pair of F-Body spindles in excellent condition! If anyone needs a sub-frame this one is $50.00 before it goes to the crusher!

Fortunately this past week wasn't entirely unproductive for the Camaro, as a number of items came back with necessary work completed.

Spindles with caliper bracket holes tapped out; dust shield hole left alone for future use with brake duct cooling plates. Also note I didn't have to cut any of the center section out since I'm using the 14" Z06 Rotors which moves the caliper further out and allows me to retain more of the stock spindle strength.

Project time has been limited but progress has been steady! A few issues with parts and fasteners holding up the works but all is well now and its only a matter of time before the Z28 is out tackling the streets again.

But I'll let the photos do the talking! :D

Lower control arm nuts and bolts arrived in Grade 8, & nyloc just as I wanted from Bolt Depot. The upper knurled bolts were ordered from Year One.

Then, a little custom front sway bar frame reinforcement! Crafted from 1/4" steel that began as new brackets for truck step up bars! Even contoured to the frame and steering box, thanks to my good buddy! ;)

All 2nd Gen's aren't created equal; in measurements that is. Hence the need for a little rear sway bar spacer fabrication:

Goal for the day; I decide to repaint the brake booster. BUT, rather than remove the 4 most obnoxious bolts on the car, I figured I'd just re-shoot it black and be done in a few minutes.

Result; I got carried away and built a 355 out of Wall Street Journals... needless to say there was NO overspray on ANYTHING! ;) and it turned out good in the end!

Thanks! It was a very lengthy decision process on the wheels. I have been hiding them since late Summer 2007. & I enjoy that they are semi-controversial! :o

Hybrid 14" Rotor anyone? These DBA rotors should last 3x times that of OEM GM. 1 reason I have 2 sets of cracked 14" rotors from Z06 owners who upgraded! They'll be crafted into something later... This means my fronts don't match my OEM 13" Z51 rears but thats true Rennwagen function over form.

Actually, we just got the whole front end sorted on Sunday. Wheels are on and the only thing left to do is complete the intricate brake lines around the master cylinder and prop valve and it'll be running again! Only catch is my camera went dead after one photo but I'll post updates soon enough.

You have a very nice looking car! I was wondering what size tires your car had on the Torque Thrust wheels that it had on it before you started. That is the look that I'm looking for for my Z28. I bought 15x7 front wheels and 15x8 rears for mine, and from what I've seen on here it looks like 275-60-15 rears will give me what I'm looking for on the rear. I'm just not sure for the front end yet. Your car had what I'm looking for as far as filling up the front wheel wells. ...Joe

If you like Porsche's check out forum.rennlist.com and reutterwerk.com. They both help a lot if you need any thing Porsche related.
Ha, indeed I do like Porsches. I actually bought my first one earlier this year hence the reason I haven't been around much on NastyZ since I've been working non-stop on the aircooled bugger. :D Oddly enough it's also red... I think I'll need to find a new color spectrum for future acquisitions.

Updates?
Hmm, probably more than I can recall since it's been a while now. I have Keith's Custom Works Carbon Fiber Radiator Cover installed after minor fabrication. New black anodized billet aluminum fender/radiator support braces up front and a whole slew of fasteners have been replaced with allen head stainless. Otherwise I also imported a set of Recaro Sportster CS Seats from Germany which I haven't had the time to install as it'll require a fair amount of fabrication to make seat brackets that are as low as I'd like so I can wear a full face helmet while thrashing the Z28 in competition events.

I like it very much!
Thanks!

coolest project thread i've seen so far. Keep up the good work and good luck
Thanks, that means a lot! I take pride in my photography and writing so I figured I'd do my best to make this an enjoyable thread for fellow 2nd Gen owners to take in! :)

Your car had what I'm looking for as far as filling up the front wheel wells. ...Joe
Thanks for the compliments! I try to keep the current Torch Red paint on her as best I can!

In the rear I only had 255/65/15 if I'm recalling the height correctly, which as you know is a conservative width for the rear, but the offset on mine placed the wheels as far out as they could go as you can probably tell. The front tires were also BF Goodrich Radial T/As but in a 215/60/15, I would suggest a wider front tire for your Z28, i.e. 225 or 235 if possible depending on offset etc. Goodluck!
