I've driven my truck another 20 miles, so it's time to put $200 in it again:( It's a 79 3/4 4WD Chevy with a 400. Its got at least one lifter ticking that won't tighten up, so rather than put a lifter in it just to have another one go bad in a couple of weeks, I'd rather just throw a new cam and lifters in it. IF I don't, I'm afraid I'll throw a lifter(s) in it and then the cam will go flat.
Haven't had much luck with this truck:mad:

I'm trying to get away as cheap as possible, as this truck probably will get driven 2000 miles a year at the most.

Here's my choices.

Crane

Edelbrock

Summit

Going to put a timing chain in it too.

or

Probably the second one, as I don't need any advance.

I'm basically looking for a stock replacement cam, and I'm trying to keep this whole swap under $200.

The Summit cam is exactly the same as the Edlebrock, but for less money. That makes for an easy decision there.

Don't buy cheap chains- they stretch horribly. Go for this one instead:

It's about the cheapest chain set you can buy that still has some quality to it.

The Summit/Edelbrock cam you listed is a pretty disappointing choice, it was our "RV" cam for years but after we started using the Comp similar grinds we stopped using the cheaper shaft. Yes it costs a bit more but it makes way better power everywhere. Check it out: http://store.summitracing.com/partdetail.asp?part=CCA%2D12%2D305%2D2&autoview=sku

Right rust, CC's 246PE is a heck of a 1-step up cam for a stock engine, imho!

With a 400 engine you could go with the Crane energizer #100052-216-216 .454 lift, 110 lsa. Would be a very mild cam in your 400 with lots of low end torque a 4x4 needs. I had one in my 302 Ford Bronco and it was a mild cam even in that. The Crane cam and lifter are a great deal.

...I'd say CCXE 256 ,idles smooth and makes more power everwhere in the powerband, even with a stock motor 400 , just my .02, DC :bowtie:

Of the three listed I would use the crane. However in my truck I use a bigger cam. A competition cam 260 he would work. More details on the truck would help.

If your looking for a eddy copy, go to northern auto parts. http://www.northernautoparts.com/ProductDetail.cfm?ProductId=1066 add a set of their lifter for less than 40 bucks. new timing chain runs 14 bucks and your way cheaper than the others. Jim

What's the max lift for a stock set of SB valve springs?

I would run chevron delo as a daily oil and add a bottle of eos for the cam break in. Also use a good moly break in lube for the cam and not the comp red stuff.

Look close b/c those cams are generic Summit house cams, imho!

As for stock spring lifts!

I'd stop at the old -151 cam at .447" lift and then go w/ a cheap set of STOCK, GM Z-28, (-142), springs!

Go w/ a good old Isky 262/270HL hy-cam b/c I missed the 400" engine size is all.

I figure the low CR'd sucker will pull like a freight train!
