Im getting side pipes for my 78. Im looking at the Patriot side pipes. They are $200. Has anyone used or heard of them? How hard are side pipes to install? Thanks, Zak.

Contact the presiding members of the sidepipe clique. ;)

Aces and Lemanster both run sidepipes and Aces is a 78 with a GTO drivetrain.

Are the Patriot sidepipes a single tube design with 3 fake inlets?

I was looking at Patriots before I was shown these...... http://store.summitracing.com/partdetail.asp?autofilter=1&part=HOK-21063HKR&N=700+115&autoview=sku
Patriots are okay....but 3" looks too small.....and they are 3" shorter
then these, which are SLIGHTLY short as it is......so I vote no.

Get these , for some reason this model # is stuck in my head.
21063HKR from Summit, 4" sidepipes, 63" long, and they look 10x better then Patriots.
I paid a fabricator $400 and gave him the steel bar (Home Depot electrical aisle) to mount
them to my custom Street and Performance headers

These are the "mufflers" Tommy showed me that I got as well. http://www.spiralturbobaffles.com/
I'm into my pipes for ~$1200 -

keep saving your nickels and dimes.. they do show up on evilbay every once in a while... but yeah, they are pricey.
Took me a long time to finally get my hands on these... chased them as they passed through the hands of several owners over a couple of years time span.

ACESHIGH, AND K5JMP - I just bought a set of dynomax headers, they have the collector on the ends alreadys.. If I wanted to run those side pipes would I have to have the collector removed? Were they a pain to install?
If you guys would, could you post more pics of your cars with those side pipes??

Thanks,
mike

what you need to make them play is an "S-pipe"... basically it makes a 180 then a 90 to dump into the pipe.

mine are the ole skool real deals.. like Tommy has...

You know, for all the time and energy, it might be worth just getting a set of regular headers, chopping the collector off, custom bending some proper diameter extensions, and re-welding on the collector.

I used to do custom exhaust work...

I was right on the verge of trying that when Brian posted the ones I have. I see no reason why it wouldn't work if you are good with a mandrel bender and a TIG.:)

you couldnt mig the pipes??? I know it wouldnt be as nice looking.. But my plans for my homemade set were to cut off the collectors from my existing headers, get some already bent tubes, cut it all to fit out to the side of the car, buy a merge collector and the 4" pipes.. Would just need to make the slash cut on the ends... I only have accessto , and experience with a mig though..

tough to have as precise heat control with a MIG.. which makes the tube thickness critical. thinner walled tube is tougher.

it can be done though.. tiny stitches works OK. with a TIG you could just cruise.

I sectioned Joe's dents otta mine with a MIG:)

Gotcha... I have mig'd 2.5 exhaust pipe from the auto parts store..
Wasnt pretty, but it held together and didnt leak. Also did a smalled diam pipe for a lawn tractor.. LOL wish I had taken pics.. Father in law had a Bolen tractor, iirc.. Old model, 197x something.. With the round muffler bolted the the head and a pipe goin straight up.. I took it off one day when he wasnt around, and made a sidepipe for it that ran down the right side and stopped right b4 the back wheel.. Was cool..

Thanks. Ok, let me load them and they will be straight on here. I wanted to try to do it ourselves, but my dad said he would rather just pay the difference and have someone else do it. So I had Phil's Muffler Shop do it here in Fort Worth. He did my full Flowmaster exhaust on my 85 Corvette. He does great work. Anyway, it took them 4 hours to do it. Its kinda weird...I dont have a picture of the underneath yet, but he crossed the exhaust pipes (L Header is Connected to R Sidepipe, R Header is Connected to L Sidepipe), he said for more clearance??? I dont know, but they look and sound amazing. I am very happy with them. Thanks guys, Zak.

They sound better than my Flowmasters... Yes, they have the built in mufflers... They arent as loud just idling, but as soon as you touch the gas they are louder than the Flowmasters, with a much deeper sound. They give it that muscle car sound you would expect our cars to sound like. I love them. I highly recommend Patriot sidepipes, you wont be disappointed. I hope to take a video of it soon and post it on here. Then you can hear/see for yourself. Thanks, Zak.

Looks good... do they have longer pipes? Looks like they could have been about 10-12" longer, but it works...

Not sure how crossing the pipes could have made less ground clearance.. Is it possible to get some pics of it underneath? Really curious to see how it was done...

Notice any power gain/loss with them?

In Texas if your car is over 25 years old, there is no emissions standards.

Hey guys, Ill get underneath pictures soon... It has been really wet/cold/foggy here for the last week. Its getting annoying. As soon as the weather is halfway decent, or until I get my shocks in the mail to install, Ill take pictures. Thanks, Zak.
