I figure why not. everyone else has a project thread.
Back in April

Following front spring change to Moog 5610 springs. Wheels would no longer fit. They would rub before this.

Bought some new tires and picked up a cleaner set of wheels.

The ripped bumper cover and no front grill just kills it for me. It got ripped when i first moved in and i was backing up and a board caught it. :whine:
One more.

Next project in the works. Upgrading rear from saggy stock springs to Hotchkis 1.5 drop kit and a new rear going from 3.08 posi to 3.42 posi. Ill add some pics of the r&r tonight. I have the springs in and the rear painted so hopefully she'll be running by the end of the weekend.

Thanks it was a light green with green interior. I didn't want to change dash so i went with the forest green. Here are a couple interior pics.

Now i get to swap out ujoint since 74's are different from 79's. I would never have guessed i thought they were identical.

I didn't know that the u-joints would differ between the years of 2nd gens. Huh...

The lower grill piece is avalable as a repop now. They are a very good fit and look exactly like the original. :D

The tear on the front cover can be repaired with a urethane epoxy fit from your local auto body supply store too.

Green interior pieces are almost impossible to find.... Your interior looks pretty much complete.

Did you put those IROC wheels on in reverse position? (Front on back and vice-versa)
Due to different backspacing, they fit second gens better that way.

Good job on the suspension work!

Were there anything wrong with the rear springs? You know that light green color you had on your car was a very rare color. I agree with Terry, those green pieces are very hard to find, keep them in great shape as you could flip those if you want to change the color of the intierior.

The springs were shot. I had 2 spring clamps in front of the axle and a helper spring behind the axle. I got another set from the rear i bought but am unsure of the wear etc. The set is from a 74 all i know is they had a better arch than the ones i pulled out. As for the light green color, i don't think it will ever be a serious contender for "collector status." The dash has a couple of cracks but all other plactic is good. Just got back from the game and i still hate whoever is calling the plays for Auburn. Kent

I saw the repop grill on ebay and have it saved. Early xmas present. :) The interior had light vinyl green seats i wish i'd have not swapped them out for dark green back and some old cutlass seats. The front ones are ready to go the seams are starting to give up. The wheels both sets had the same back space just under 4 3/4 each set of 4. They were donated from a friend. I didn't think they would rub but on deep pot hole it did rub up front. :whine:
The little things are getting me putting this new rear back in.

I got the brake lines back on and e brake hooked up tonight. The u-joint i'm farming out to a freind that has more experience. Tomorrow i should be good to go. Crossing fingers. I want to try out the new 3.42 rearend. :-)

I ended up having to get a combo u-joint at a local truck driveline shop and they put it in. A spicer 5-3022x. 79 driveshaft uses inner clip and a larger diameter cup size and the opposite side uses a smaller diameter cup for the 74. I walked in and told him the dilema and he new which one i needed. I just found the searches involving this swap/conversion. The key is knowing what to search and alot of looking. I was going to take it out and my front brake caliper had been dragging the last time i drove it and a new caliper didn't fix it. Turned out the line was clogged. Took it out for a ride and it is the quietest rearend i've ever had in my car. I'll do some more riding tomorrow after i check for leaks or puddles :-) kent

Updated pics. Installed Hotchkis 2408c kit along with a 3.42 posi rearend. When I drove it the suspension feels great. firm and goes where i want it to go. When i nail the throttle it squats and wants to run. No wheel hop. I made sure i got the leaf spring pads to seat all the way in the spring pocket. I did some grinding to achieve this. Well worth it. Thanks for all the tips and motivation.
Moog 5610 springs up front and hotchkis kit 2408c in rear. Wheels are 15' with 3.75 backspace with 235/60 15 tires. I would have liked a little more rake. I was thinking of swapping shackles for a set that has another set of holes. Satisfied now to drive and enjoy. :bowtie:

Sweet swap it for a 70-73! Both are nice but the Camaro tail end looks better! BTW I spy air shocks on the bird!

Nice photos though! I'm equally satisfied with my Hotchkis springs. I also spotted a can of PB Blaster on the last page... that was the secret ingredient to my leaf spring swap... old bolts were a piece of cake!

Thanks for replies. I need to do some interior resto next. Those old cutlass seats are shot. I need to go around and bleed the brakes one more time also. I'll post a pic of my homemade bleeder tool. I thought the wheels were 3.75. I need to start a journal with part numbers and specs. The memory isn't as good as it used to be. :-)

I liked the first pic the best. Cheesy 3rd gen wheels with no center caps was a downgrade. And cowl hood is WAY too high ! Anything over 2" is rediculous IMHO.
Put the stock hood back on, and maybe a set of Turbines, and you would have
a winner !
And what hs with the Monte Carlo/Grand Prix/Cutlass velour bucket seats ?

The wheels are a temporary fix since the AR wheels I had on the wouldn't fit due to lowering the car in the front and back. As for the seats I put them in about 10 years ago when the originals were about to fall out. I've rolled the odometer over twice since I've had it. So a couple hundred thousand miles takes it toll on crap seats. It was my daily driver from 89 until approximately mid 99 when I bit the bullet and bought a car and started car payments.

Ya, I saw that sway bar. As for the cowl hood, I am modifying a set of shackles so I can raise the back up approximately an inch so I have a little more rake. Then the hood will look great. I have a set of 17" rims and tires that I want that will complete the package. I also have a set of 80 fender vents I was wanting to put on it. I have the rear fender flairs off an 80 also but in order to run them you have to remove the chrome or stainless trim along the bottom and I am not really sure I want to do this so the rear flairs may not get put on.

Just an update, I've always wanted to changed my steering box since I drove a 79 Z/28. The steering was so much better in the Z with straight ratio steering vs. variable ratio. I went to pullapart for a part for my accord and they just put a 79 Z28 on the lot. It wasn't listed online yet. I picked up the steering box and 3:08 posi rearend. I installed the steering box today and it handles so much better. Steering is so much more accurate and responsive. I was going to clean up the rearend and sell it. I couldn't find the code on it due to rust. I need to give it a good cleaning. I'd recommend this upgrade to anyone with variable ratio steering. Next I need to pressure wash the engine bay and frame area.

Start doing one job and it changes into another. I'm going tonight to get a new 1 piece oil pan gasket due to the amount of oil everywhere. I'm also going to swap out the front seal on the tranny while I'm at it.

I wanted to swap to a manual trans and in going to find parts I found a world class t5 from a 91 Isuzu. Since it is only about $70 for trans and shifter I think I'm going to skip work tomorrow and go get it. I found a site that lists how to identify it so I'm going to bring the list to identify before I pull it.

I got the converter in. I'm not as young as I used to be I can tell you that. I'd kill to have a lift. The converter says 3200 stall but it is actually around 3600-4000. Wow what a difference. I need to relearn my around town driving and get used to how the car reacts to the new converter.

http://www.summitracing.com/parts/SUM-700350/

That is the converter I put in this week. It would have been cool to do that Road Tour express but I didn't think my car was "nice" enough compared to the cars in the video's.

I went to the test and tune last night. What an experience. First few runs I cleaned off the tires and it spun dang near half way down the track and 10.1 in the 1/8. Very poor shifting. The converter flashes good though. Then I tried to roast the tires to heat the grand ams up and it got alot more traction. My best was 9.38 but everytime I got to drive and 4000 it is like it would fall on its face. It acted like it was pulling more timing or it had no gas. Dang near like a hollow sound? I'm going to pull the 3310 off and give it a good cleaning and check my fuel filter. I wonder if my stock fuel pump isn't keeping up? There were some fast fox bodies there.

I just ordered a pair of Mickey S/R Radials.
http://www.summitracing.com/parts/MTT-6653/

Kyphur I may do that. I'd love to have it a manual. I've seen a few good deals on t56's for sale but mounting them up crooked or straight is a bit confusing. I need to learn the codes to identify them. I had a line on a 90 wc T-5 but it hasn't worked out yet. As much dough as it takes to drag race a higher stall has always been a mystery and something I thought I wanted but with the current converter it is pretty radical in my eyes. But in other peoples it may be mild. A matter of perception. As a side note I f halfheartedly went to Grissom in 84 and then a few days in 85. Those were the days.

I wanted to go to test and tune tonight but my carb didn't cooperate. I installed a 650 double pumper from a member and I guess I didn't get it clean enough and had the center hung floats way to high. I finally got it but it is too late. Next weekend it will be on.

FatnLow
06-25-2011, 12:16:14 AM
I went to test and Tune tonight. The new tires and 650 double pumper got me a best of 8.993 in the 1/8 at 75.5. The best thing I felt was 1.9 60ft times. Those tires like about 18psi. They hook much better. I think I'm still having a fuel shortage issue though. The car around 4000 acts like it is starving for gas. Currently the carb is jetted 72 primary and 76 secondary. I think with the 268 cam I'm close but I need a fresh fuel pump and a fuel filter. I need to post up a question about fuel filters. Good night though.

Went to test and tune tonight. My best was 8.662 @ 78.45 13.712 @ 96.69. The track had a lot more traction but it was also about 25 degrees cooler and less humid. This was the last one of the season. Now I need to figure out what I want to work on first. I want to redo headliner, along with redo interior. I lso need body bushings. I want solid with frame connectors but I may just settle for poly and no connectors. Fun night though.

Sounds like you have been having a blast! Hahahaha, looking good, keep it up! How much of a difference did you notice in the handling after you installed the hotchkis rearend kit and moog springs? Im currently debating on what to go with for mine.

FatnLow
12-02-2011, 05:24:04 PM
The moog springs helped the look and handling. I wanted the front down. They still have quite a bit of spring\bounce which I hate tire rubbing. I now have tires that don't do either. I have been seriously thinking of swapping them out with the matching hotchkis set. The rear swap made a huge difference since my rear springs were shot. It is kind of a trip now having the shocks doing some work. I had just helper springs with my old ones and it road like a tank. It handles much better now. Since it's xmas time if you watch summit they have promo's and coupons on parts. I just missed getting the front springs for $150 due to a sale.

btw I wish mine was a 4speed like yours. Welcome to the forum. This place is a wealth of knowledge and members there are many active members.

Im going to lower mine as well, maybe even lower than what you went, Im going 2 inches lowered at a minimum. Mine didnt come with a rear sway bar and around corners holy crap does it lean, and I have been looking at the hotchkis sway bar kit and think im gunna go with it. As for the front springs, still debating.
The four speed is the main reason I bought the car, its a crap tranny, being a saginaw, but it gives me room to grow, been looking around for a good deal on a T56. Im not in any hurry though so we will see, lots and lots of work ahead.... And thanks for the warm welcome, this site is a freakin 2nd gen camaro gold mine.

Damn I bought it about 10 years ago from a place selling them and it was fixed and not new. I guess I now see how long it lasts. I was thinking of getting a plastic welder and try that fix. Anyone try the plastic welder on a urethane bumper cover. I was all set to add the front spoiler I just bought.

Thanks Charlton. I put up some fresh pics tomorrow. I ended up redoing around the light with some wire screen in the kit to enhance the hold. Urethane doen't bond the greatest to rubber.

I also went to the testntune with Promods running. The were running from 3.91 to low 4's in the 1/8th. Hauling a$$. After we got to run about an hour. It was 55 degrees out and about 75 humidity. Since the track was sticking so well I got my fastest 1/8 mile yet at 8.573 going 79.3. I had a 1.827 60 ft also. I ran against a 67 Chevelle with a big block and slicks he ran 6.948 at 100.9. Good time tonight I enjoyed myself I got about 8 runs in in total from the 8.5 to 9.1. Drag racing takes some tree skills definitely.

Here is a picture from Monday. I drove it to work and on the way home I got stuck in traffic jam idling for at least 30 minutes on the interstate. There is no doubt that I have a 190 thermostat.
btw..I planon going to Montgomery Motorsports park this Friday for the Southern Outlaw series. It is also Test and tune so the track should have a lot of grip. Come on out.

Thanks Matt.

Vernon I did it about 6 months ago and I've left it in the Alabama sun a few times and it still looks good. I need to get back to it with putty smoothing it out and primer etc. I bought it from Harbor Freight I think around $17. It took me a couple tries. I finally had to melt a screen mesh that was supplied in the kit to get it as firm is I'd like it. I need to get back on my car. I've been sidetracked by my kids project civic.
