Thought id start a progress thread on my console i'm making. I switched from an auto to manual, and didn't want to fork out $300 + on a another one, so I am going this route. So far I have got some 24 gauge galvanized steel and had it cut 36" X 8 1/2" to 10 1/2 with 1", 45 degree angles. I plan on installing ;a shifter boot, switches for interior lights, windows, and either covering it with a vinyl/fabric/leather or painting it. Here are the pics so far. Give me your ideas too.

i think the stock one looks better, it looks to futuristic and an additional switch to beam people up is needed.

I think it looks great. The fabric idea would be your best bet. Thumbs up.

Im thinking bout ordering this shifter, just need a confirmation on dimensions. Its a 2002 Audi TT Manual Shift Boot. http://i273.photobucket.com/albums/jj240/79Zed28/shiftboot.jpg

Well, another option since you have what you have, is to 'add' onto it. Put a storage compartment or something....then just fiberglass the whole thing and then you can add curves and whatever to it. Be easy enough to glass in brackets if you wanted to as well. Then cover that stuff up with foam and fabric and you are UBER custom :)

I kinda like the futuristic look, might need some additional panels too tho.

Looks good so far. I like the shifter boot. Put some fabric over it with french stitching.

If I were to do some fiberglassing, would it be possible to use a polyurethane spray foam and sand that to get a mold, then fiberglass over that?

Yep, should work OK. I did something similar on my boat but I used a two part foam.

I got it from a local paint supplier. It comes in two different cans. Just follow the directions on mixing but BE CAREFUL! This stuff will break stuff as it expands. You always have to have "escape" ports for the expanding foam to exit. This is the same stuff they put in boats. Anywhere that sells marine repair/fiberglass supplies should have it. If you can't find any, and your interested, I will get it for you and ship it out or I could give you the number of the place here and I'm sure they'd ship it out. I think it was around $32.00 last I checked. Let me know.

Of course, you could just go with a console delete. My 73 is a console delete, and I think that shifter boot would look pretty cool right there on the floor hump, imho. But your console looks pretty cool, too. I just find that anytime somebody gets into my 72, they use the console to lift themselves and adjust themselves in the seat. Crack, crack.. Drives me absolutely nuts!

Needs more contour or something, lack of thought so to speak. Like someone went out and said here's a 3ft piece of steel. Give me a 1" bend on each side and presto instant console...

Yeah, this is why I am thinking about fiberglassing . Then hopefully after covering it with a vinyl it will get away from the simple look.
