Guys, do i need to apply primer and paint before I apply rust protectant{por15 ,zerorust etc}? The pans have not been installed yet, waiting on welder. Did a search on subject with mixed revues. If i dont prime and paint before i apply rust protectant, am i setting myself up for problems down the road. The car is not a daily driver yet, I just want to do things right and not twice and yes $ does not grow on any of my trees out here. But i will do what is neccesary to have it done right. Can I do the prime and paint or should I let a body shop do it? What should that cost? My local BS wanted almost $500.00 to install 2 door hinges and paint. Did them myself, it just took me about 3 days to get the door back on and close decient. You guys are the experts so please give me suggestions. Thanks in advance!! http://www.nastyz28.com/ubb/smile.gif

POR is only applied over bare metal that has been properly prepped. Your pans probably have e-coat on them now, so I see no reason to sand that off to apply POR. Also, even when prepped properly POR doesn't adhere very well to smooth, new metal. It is great for something that has already rusted though.

On my '71 project I installed the pans with lap welds then sealed the seams on both sides with seam sealer to keep water from getting in between the two layers of metal. I sanded the pans with 220 grit to break the surface of the e-coat then applied two good coats of ZeroRust rattle can paint, both top and bottom.

ZeroRust is good stuff. I stopped using POR when I discovered how good ZR is. It lays down beautifully, comes in lots of colors, and comes in rattle cans. I repainted a set of "bilco" doors going to my basement with gray ZR. These doors are only a few inches above grade and are 100% exposed to the elements. They were beginning to rust before I prepped them and shot them with ZR over a year ago. Today they still look like the day they were painted and that is after the wettest year we have had in the this part of country for a l-o-n-g time.

e coat is electrodeposition coat. I prolly misspelled it. It is paint that is sprayed onto panels using the same idea as chrome with the positive negative charges something like that anyway im not for sure. On floor pans i would just scuff it up good weld them in use your POR 15 or ZR then use some good seam sealer on your welded joints inside and out of the car then prime.

When I sanded mine I did not attempt to remove the e-coating. My only goal was to de-gloss the surface in order to provide some "tooth" for the Zero Rust.

I wouldn't worry about priming them, scuff them really good, then use zero rust or the permatex stuff (can't remeber what they call it) that was recommended to me by the paint reps
