View Full Version : Now we're doing my wife's '77
seventy7camaro 08-29-2008, 01:34:26 PM Figured I'd start posting up pics of her car. We got started on it yesterday. Judy wants to have it painted 1977 Camaro yellow. That's what we're gonna do. It's a great car to begin with. No rust and only a couple of small (quarter sized) dents. We'll keep you up to date. Here's a couple of pics from earlier in the year/

brooksman9 08-29-2008, 09:52:29 PM Looks like a great car to start with. Should be an excellent companion to your other one when you get done. Looking forward to following the progress.
SS2001 08-29-2008, 10:07:50 PM I love it. Good luck.
77RS 08-29-2008, 10:25:21 PM man that is a solid looking car! She'll be beautiful :)
seventy7camaro 08-29-2008, 11:57:53 PM I remember this one from one of your other posts. Beautiful car. Looks like this one just needs refreshing. How is the interior? What are your plans for it?
The black interior's in really good shape. I've already switched the dash from dummy lights over to the gauges and replaced the warped dash pad. The driver's seat cover needs replaced (got the covers already) and both door's weatherstripping needs replaced. I'm gonna have to strip the interior out to make it easier to do the color change.
We're planning on the Camaro yellow paint with the '77 Z28 striping minus the "Z28" text. We're doing the bumpers and 5-spoke rally wheels the same color as the body. We're also gonna use a '78 hood for the scoop and we've got NOS lower spoiler end pieces to go on there too. Essentially a Z28 tribute with no claims of being a Z28 car.
The engine had been worked over some before we got it. It's a 305 but it'll suit our needs. Gonna add some chrome there and a '70 double snorkle breather. The tranny has a shift kit and does just fine. It has an open 3.42 rear which we may change. It has working air so we can cruise in comfort.
76zo6CAMARO 08-31-2008, 07:39:41 PM Sounds like a great plan. I'll stay tuned for the updates!
Marks71BB 08-31-2008, 08:36:11 PM Looks like a good clean start ya got there.
Leave the 3.42 gears and just add a posi in the punkin.
76_TypeLT 08-31-2008, 11:49:44 PM Another big bumper, gotta love it!
seventy7camaro 09-01-2008, 12:21:38 AM Looks like a good clean start ya got there.
Leave the 3.42 gears and just add a posi in the punkin.
When I said "change" I was referring to changing to a posi unit not the ratio.
Camaroking 09-03-2008, 10:34:24 PM Dude that car is nice wish i could start with that cant wait to see the color!
King
deputyrob 09-03-2008, 10:42:29 PM awesome car to start with!
rustover 09-04-2008, 10:48:52 PM Charlie, Looks like a great car. If all goes well I'm going to try to stop by Super Chevy Saturday 9-27 on my way back from Pigeon Forge.
seventy7camaro 11-23-2008, 08:25:50 PM Here's a link to a thread I started on the build sheets found in her car... both her car and a build sheet for a Z28 built 1 car before hers.

seventy7camaro 11-23-2008, 08:49:33 PM Work on the car's been going slowly and with deer hunting season in now, it'll be even slower- for a little while. Here's some pics of the stripped out interior. The car's in really excellent shape. The floor boards are like brand new. I won't need to be doing anything there. The console looks like it's nearly unused. There is only one small cigarette burn. What used Camaro doesn't have at least one of those? I didn't even see it till I had the console out of the car.

I'll post up more as progress continues.
rustover 11-23-2008, 09:54:23 PM Charlie, You aren't kidding. That car is in great shape. I have never seen one under the carpet look that good.
seventy7camaro 11-23-2008, 10:00:00 PM We're even going to try and keep the original carpet. Only chink there is- there's some chewing gum stuck in the fibers under where the passenger / front floor mat was. The carpet, other than needing a good vacuuming and the gum is great! Any suggestions on getting the gum out?
BonzoHansen 11-23-2008, 10:03:00 PM Wow, that car is clean! Nice!
Yeah, paint it yellow, red 77s suck. :p
<--wishes his car was like the correct 77 orange it was new....
rustover 11-23-2008, 10:08:53 PM On fresh gum, I have used Freeze mist. Its a can of Freezing liquid. Used in electronics to isolate thermal problems. Radio shack may have it. I used to order it from an electronic distributor, back in the day when repairing tv's. If that gum has been there awhile, I'm not sure. Maybe a product called GOO Gone. http://www.magicamerican.com/googone.aspx . I have used it to remove some sticker residue. I know tractor supply carries it. Maybe Walmart. I would try it on a piece that you couldn't see to make sure it doesn't affect the color.
a79Classic 11-25-2008, 09:21:42 PM I use this stuff here..
http://i125.photobucket.com/albums/p66/furrface/junk/de_solv_it.jpg
It's Citrus based and gets out gum, crayons, oil, greace.. you name it.. have had AWESOME luck with it.. Can be found at Walmart, Target, etc..
seventy7camaro 01-06-2009, 12:20:08 PM OK. Now that deer season is over for the year, it's time to get started on Judy's car again. On the hunting front, I was shut out for only the 4th year since 1971. I didn't even see a buck till the last week of muzzleloading season and he was too far away for a shot. My nephew got the only buck here this year. Here's a pic of it. It had an 18" spread and dressed out at 160 pounds. That's a very big deer weight-wise for our neck of the woods.
http://i38.photobucket.com/albums/e106/Seventy7Camaro/Hunting2008007.jpg
Now, back to the car. I've begun working to get the front end taken off and the engine removed. I'm still amazed at the total lack of rust damage on her car. Here's a pic of the lower portion of the passenger fender. I've never seen a fender from our area with no rust there.
http://i38.photobucket.com/albums/e106/Seventy7Camaro/DSC00022-1.jpg
I also got around to mounting the '78 Z28 scoop to her hood. The holes were already on the hood-bottom but I had to drill out the top side. Also used a cutting disk to remove the needed sheet metal to allow the scoop to recess into the hood properly.
http://i38.photobucket.com/albums/e106/Seventy7Camaro/DSC00003-12.jpg
http://i38.photobucket.com/albums/e106/Seventy7Camaro/DSC00002-12.jpg
The car isn't totally without rust though. The passenger side wheel well is rusted beyond repair below where the battery tray "was". This came, I'd imagine, from extended exposure to the battery acid. I just happened to be able to obtain an NOS wheel well and battery tray shortly after we got the car since I'd already saw the rust there and past experience with my '77 dictated that I'd need new ones.
http://i38.photobucket.com/albums/e106/Seventy7Camaro/DSC00023-2.jpg
That's all for today.
KJZ28 01-06-2009, 12:31:49 PM How did you ever manage to get such a rust free car!! Your making me jealous!!
seventy7camaro 01-06-2009, 09:33:33 PM How did you ever manage to get such a rust free car!! Your making me jealous!!
Believe me, I had some idea that it was somewhat rust-free since it had been garage kept all of it's life, but this is surprising me too! I got the driver's fender off today and found exactly as I did on the passenger fender... no rust. I did have a stripped bolt on the wheel well and a broken nut on the bottom of the fender where it attaches to the body. Those types of problems I can deal with easy enough. Now that I've seen all of the body sheet metal, I think we can safely say that once finished, the car will still be wearing all of it's "born with" body panels. All except the added scoop of course.

I got'cha. LOL
tater_79 01-06-2009, 11:07:23 PM Man, I really like this car. I had one just like it about 14 years ago, and for various reasons I let it go. Every time I think about it, I want to kick myself.
Great score, can't wait to see the finished product.
http://i712.photobucket.com/albums/ww124/tater_79_z28/CAR002.jpg
seventy7camaro 01-17-2009, 12:21:33 PM I haven't gotten too much done in the last few days because of the cold, but I did manage to at least get the engine and transmission pulled. It's supposed to maybe get into the 30's in the next few days so maybe I can get them outside and pressure washed so I can begin working on them. It's kinda hard getting anything done while I'm working 3-11 anyway since, except during deer hunting season, I'm not really a "morning person".

KJZ28 01-17-2009, 04:48:22 PM Well that looks like a chore!! Keep up the progress!
rustover 01-17-2009, 06:29:02 PM Charlie, you have a lot of work ahead of you, but you been there before. The car will be awesome when finished. Are you still looking at having it painted this Spring? My project is on hold until next month. If work stays the same, I will not have much car time. I may just have it painted instead of trying it myself. My drive train is DONE! I picked the rear end up today. Keep the pics coming. Russ

Yeah, lots of work there but it's easier the second time around. Our plans are to have both of our cars at Carlisle this year. I'm shooting for trying to get the car down to Mike sometime in February. Are you going to talk with him about maybe doing yours?
V8TEC 01-18-2009, 01:34:26 AM That car looks really solid Charlie. Great progress being made, keep it up!
Another big bumper car in the works!
rustover 01-18-2009, 10:56:16 AM I'm either going to try to get him or another guy thats local. It depends on how the next few months go at work.

seventy7camaro 02-01-2009, 05:59:55 PM I was finally able to get some pressure washing done today. The engine, transmission, firewall and the subframe cleaned up really well. Of course, they'll all be redone. I also was able to verify that the transmission numbers match the car and the engine. It may not mean much to anyone since the car's not a Z and the engine's a 305, but as far as I'm concerned, it's nice to know.

seventy7camaro 02-02-2009, 09:01:20 PM oh man it's almost a sin to cut holes in a car that nice
The only hole I've cut in this car (and ever plan to) is the hole in the hood for the '78 scoop. I've got extra hoods if I ever decide to go back.
76zo6CAMARO 02-03-2009, 08:25:22 AM That will be a nice pair for Carlisle. Its cleaning up real good. Enjoying the pics, too.
seventy7camaro 04-05-2009, 09:16:53 PM We've decided not to try and rush to attend Carlisle this year. My job will make it nearly impossible anyway. Got a few things done recently so I included some pics. The engine's done and ready to go back in once the firewall and subframe are done. I'm working on them now. I found that the original front spiral shocks were still on the car. Also, there was still a tag on the passenger side coil spring. I'll keep ya'll up to date.

rustover 04-05-2009, 11:25:48 PM Charlie, the motor looks sweet.
seventy7camaro 04-15-2009, 12:40:16 PM On a hunch that someone looking here hasn't seen this in the "swap meet" section, I need this tube for the heat/ac blower motor. If you've got one, let me know. The opening in the motor case is 7/8".

seventy7camaro 07-02-2009, 05:04:10 PM OK it's been a while since I posted anything here but I have gotten a few things done. I've finished with the front suspension, subframe and firewall. Yesterday we loaded "HER 77" up and then took it to the body shop this morning for it's new colors. He'll have it for a while, then we'll bring it home for some things here. I need to address the AC compressor and hoses etc. We'll put the engine, tranny, wheel wells and support on and take it back to him for finishing. Figured I'd throw in a few pics of the company it'll be keeping for a while too. There's a pretty decent '74 there for eventual work also.

That'd be great Russ. He said he'll probably have the shell painted in about 3 weeks and I can come and get it then. When I come back, I'll bring the top pieces for the plug wire retainers for powdercoating if that's alright. She's decided she wants the valleys black (instead of orange) to match her valve covers. The headlight buckets will need powdercoated too. Would you be able to tackle those too?
Don't make any special trips, but, if you see some progress on it, would you snap some pics and send 'em my way?

Will do Charlie. I can handle all of those parts.
seventy7camaro 07-11-2009, 04:29:28 PM We picked up Judy's car today from the body shop. We brought it home to put the engine, transmission and wheel wells on. Once I've got that done, we'll take it back for him to finish off. Here's a few pics from today.

duaneorr333 07-12-2009, 01:45:39 AM Wow Charlie, Judy's car is looking good. I'm sure shes excited to get it on the road.
rustover 07-14-2009, 12:35:04 AM That was a quick turn around from the initial body work. Looks great. When do you hope to have it back to him? Looks great!
seventy7camaro 07-14-2009, 04:53:32 PM That was a quick turn around from the initial body work. Looks great. When do you hope to have it back to him? Looks great!
Thanks. Like I had previously stated, there was very minimal body work that needed done to it. He surprised me when he left a message to call him. I figured he'd found a problem with the car or something. There are a couple of runs that need to be massaged out but he's assured me when he's finished they won't be there. He's doing the remaining pieces while I've got the car here and they'll be ready to put on when I take the car back. He hasn't sprayed any clear on any of it yet.
I had initially told him I'd be back sometime in the middle of next week. But then, I went to work Sunday (worked 16 hours in exchange for being off Saturday to pick the car up) and saw that the schedule had changed and that I didn't have a buddy Monday thru Thursday. 16 hour days again. I'm off Saturday until the 11-7 shift Wednesday night, so maybe I can get it back to him Thursday or so. I'm also waiting on 1 wheelwell, the radiator support, and the bumper brackets to be sand blasted too. I won't be taking it back until they're done, so I can't say with any certainty when it'll go back.
We're both happy with the color and can't wait to see it with the black paint and orange and red stripes on it. But.... I guess we'll have to.
Russ... would you be willing to try the exterior door handles too?
rustover 07-14-2009, 11:07:26 PM We can try them. I'm nervous about the spring inside. The heat could take the temper out of it. I think I have a used one I can test with.
seventy7camaro 08-07-2009, 03:14:31 PM Here's some pics from today. It's not 100% done yet, but it's close enough for me to work on it at home for a while. Judy just loves her car's new paint.

Thanks for the compliments guys and for the personal observation Russ. You're right, the gaps are great! The lighter colors are very unforgiving where gaps are concerned.
seventy7camaro 09-20-2009, 08:56:24 PM I haven't posted here lately but there has been some progress made on "HER 77". We're in the "home stretch" now as everything done has an immediate positive impact on the car. We were even able to use the original carpet. The biggies yet to do are: seats aren't done yet, need to get the tail pipes bent and stainless tips welded on, still have to drop the gas tank and detail it, and the front end needs aligned. There's a few other odds and ends too but they'll be done soon enough. Here's a few pics to try and get back up to speed.
A couple pics of the interior awaiting the seats...

seventy7camaro 09-21-2009, 08:38:10 PM Got around to taking the gas tank out today and found yet another build sheet. That's the 4th and should be the last. Threw in a couple of pics of it and a shot of the rear of the car. The build sheet is pretty well shot but I'll laminate it like I did the others anyway.

Looking at the pics Russ, they look like new! I had no doubt that your finished product would turn out this way. They will certainly add something to the car. PM sent.
seventy7camaro 10-04-2009, 10:35:13 AM Very cool. I love the color.
Thanks, We like it. At one time Judy had a '68 Barracuda Formula S that was nearly the same color. Since we couldn't afford to get another Formula S to restore, we bought this '77 Camaro. With her 'Cuda in mind we painted it this color kinda as a tribute. It's pretty close to the yellow offered in '77 so it's perfectly acceptable for both of us.
motionwannabe 10-06-2009, 09:39:30 AM I love the big bumpers!! Cant wait till mine is back together:bowtie:
seventy7camaro 03-01-2010, 10:03:17 AM I haven't been able to do much around here lately but shovel and plow snow. Our upholstry guy called and said Judy's seat covers were done on Friday though. I managed to get them installed Sunday. They turned out just like we wanted and the "cornsilk yellow" matches the car's paint perfectly. Now, if I can only get it off the mountain to get the front end aligned and get it inspected, there'll only be a few little things to be done before it's ready to drive. We've had to use 4-wheel drive since November to get up the ridge to our house. I guess that's the price you pay for solitude.

Agreed VERY nice work.
seventy7camaro 07-08-2010, 12:31:13 PM I haven't posted lately but here's Judy's car as it sits now. We had "HIS77" and "HER77" both out for a show a couple of weekends ago. They got lots of attention sitting side by side as they were.
