Evening folks. First post. I have gleamed a ton of very useful info off this site in only a few days. Thanks to all for sharing. Just bought 1980 Z28 350 4 speed. Got it Friday, started working on it Saturday. With help of my neighbor, fixed exhaust (many missing bolts, blown gasket ect), new wires and plugs (2 bad wires and a bad plug) needless to say runs a lot quieter and smoother today. Tomorrow shocks, maybe power steering pump and hoses and a little carb work. Was a lot of fun. My 3 1/2 year enjoyed helping out all day as well and getting right in there. "Daddy we're putting headers on the Z!" LOL. Never thought this would happen. Last Z I owned was yellow 1977 Z28 4 speed.....over 20 years ago. This car is silver now, originally Tan as I found out today. I am thinking of going black with the appropriate stripe kit. The one thing that was great was that every piece of paper came with this car from the time it left the lot in 1980 including window price tag and Dealer bill of sale. Very interesting to read the life of this car from day one. Original owners manual ect. More later

Thanks for your help for sure. Was nice to take the quiet smooth car out LOL. I'm pretty sure I'll be seeing quite a bit of your guys. Heater core ect :-) Will take pix along the way and include during the updates

Finished off the shocks today. Decided to ditch air shocks in back after doing some reading and put a nice set of Monroes in. So, I figure while the back tires are off, I'd pull the drum. This lead me to see why the emergency break wasn't working that great. The bar right below the wheel cylinder had fallen off at some point. grinding the spring and the bar down. The spring was mostly gone. No drum damage was lucky and surprising. I went to 3 parts stores, no one has the spring and amazingly, spring replacement kits do not include this spring. Every other spring but that. So now I have to hunt for a spring. Another 2 hour job turns into 6 LOL. I have to say, a lot of hack mechanic action went on for this car. Nothing spectacularly major just laziness. Whether it was not putting in the header screw in the right back or not seating this spring correctly. Found a few more surprises but overall, she'll be a beauty when I'm done. Adjusted the window on drivers door to close gap toward back. Will need all new weather stripping plus the outside trim and rubber on outside top door. Also looking for black seat belt cover. The cover that goes over the back seat housing. More later.

Thanks for the PMs! Was a good day. On my 4th try to find the "Emergency Break strut spring" (thank you new Chilton's book) I went to a GM dealer. Nope Would have to order. Staggering when you think this would/should be a common drum brake part. So, off to North Las Vegas and pick a part. There they were. Carcasses of Camaros gone by. Made my way to the slim pickings of a 1978 and there, drum off was that little spring that gave me 6 hours of futile searching. I walked away thanking the generosity of Camaros who made the ultimate sacrifice so that my Z28 emergency brake would work and not roll down my driveway into my neighbors truck! Plus they had the seat belt cover and Vacuum canister. Forgot how much fun those places are. Like pumpkin patches for big people LOL. Next up, rebuild the front end and put new power steering pump and lines on. Pix to follow!

I had mentioned one of the things that was great about this car was the amount of original paperwork that came with it. Below are some (not so good cell phone pix) pictures of the original 1980 Camaro sales flyer and also the window tag from the dealership $8904.32!

When I get a bit more time, I will try to scan these for better viewing

I was kind of surprised it lasted so long on Craigs list. About 4 weeks. The day I agreed to buy it, that night he had 4 inquiries. Was meant to be I guess. Few more things to do, then smog, then register, then vrooom vrooom on the highway and down the strip! LOL

P.S. Just joined for Gold here. I have saved in spades just from the info on this site. Thanks to all for sharing.

Hit some salvage yards today for a look around. Not many 2nd gen Camaros around in the acres and acres of cars. Went to one and he said sadly they have none. They would shred them right away as they are great money! Wowsa. Many disappearing on the recycle heap it seems. Got a few catalogs coming and then will decide where I go next with the interior.

just rebuild it... or just get a bolt-on holley or eddie. both around $300
650 would be a fine size for you.

Was extremely easy to install. Had friend hook her up to a machine after to fine tune her but to be honest, she fired right up out of the box and hauled. So the answer is I like the carb very much LOL. Now the big decision is whether to register as a classic auto (less than 2500 miles per year) or not. Would get better insure rates plus no smog again. Certainly some benefits. Will decide tonight as I do want this registered this week.

Amazing what a move and a few kids will do to slow down a job LOL. Well I had to cave a bit and I had the heater core, steering gear box and other goodies done by a pro. (Ed at http://www.sunautoservicenv.com who is having a good time on my baby) Had that Heater core out and in very quickly. Has to have been some sort of voodoo magic :-) Got a bunch a bunch of pixs I'll upload shortly. Going to reinstall new dash, guages, cluster and circuit board. Looking at Ecklers and Fbodywarehouse for those goodies and will be ordering tomorrow for expedited ship. I see they have an oil gauge that can install in lace of clock. Nice. Seeing as how the after market one that came with car sprung leak and deposited a quart of oil on drivers floor. That was fun. Will hold off on A/C fix till Summer approaches and start to re-do interior completely. pix to follow

well will have to change my avatar soon as all the silver is off the car in the body shop. Some rust repairs on the right side windshield posts and both inner rocker panels. Also will replace radiator core support. Looks like I'm going to go with black paint with some blue pearl in it and a blue strip kit. though I am seriously thinking of using the 79 rear strip as I like the Z28. Interior also getting makeover.

Mechanic did a great job. I now have working A/C, heat and horn. pix to follow.

Some additional minor spot welding and dent repair redone. On a few places they had just filled in big dents rather than pulling them out first

Seat questions. I am thinking of upgrading my seats. Ricaro? etc. thoughts and opinions appreciated. Also if suggesting another car model for used seats which work well with 1980 Z28 BMW etc.

Rolling along now. Body work done and being primed tonight. Interior stripped and floors in excellent condition. Will clean surface rust and sound proof floor. Going to replace nose with new flex-glass nose

http://www.ss396.com/mm5/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=camaro7081&Product_Code=LBC-7881F

My body and paint guy was concerned over existing nose warpage so I opted to put the more durable nose on. While off, radiator core support will be replaced. Found a very good one at junkyard for $45. Will be cleaned and painted before installation.

Under carriage in very good shape. Will also be cleaned and sound proofed. Rear end will be black gloss.

Also ordered today were new seat belts (black) for all 4 seats from same guys as above.
Door trim and felts ordered, new lock set (both doors, trunk and glove), new trunk latch, new door latches and handles. New fisher body sill plates

Also ordered strip kit today from Phoenix Graphics. 1980 Blue strip kit. I may leave off trunk strip as I really like the 79 trunk style better (it's Z28 in appropriate color) but they won't break up a kit. If anyone has a blue Z28 rear trunk decal. let me know.

On hunt now for gas tank emblem (easy find) and front grill Z28 emblem (not so easy.) Both blue

I have decided to also re-do my stock seats rather than install new ones.

Color of the car will be black with blue pearl. Multi clear coat.

Man my kids gonna have a nice car down the road LOL better install new locks on bedroom door :-)

things moving along quite nicely. All new parts, seals, moldings, door locks, handles and latches, etc have arrived. car primed out. All new metal welded in. Now moving onto removing surface rust on floors and trunk and shooting. New nose arrives and will be primed. All parts being painted separately then re assembled which should give fantastic paint job look. Here some pix. Enjoy!
