These pictures are not nearly as exciting as some of the other great looking cars on here and seeing one come apart is nothing new. This was a big step for me because even though I knew I wanted to do it, I was reluctant to jump so to speak. I took a few days off to get it this far and hopefully soon I will get it on that new rotisserie I made last fall.
I don’t get a lot of time off so you won’t be seeing a bunch of new stuff being put back together anytime soon, however since I have a lot more time than I do money that’s ok
Seeing everybody tearing their cars apart and how cool they are coming out has been great motivation, wish me luck. http://i292.photobucket.com/albums/mm17/ispeedalot/P1010385.jpg

I wondered why it wanted to fall over every time I tried to turn it over LOL, just figured if you seen one, you didn’t need to see the other one. As for the car it is in pretty good shape other than the every day wear and tear. Needs new front springs, bushings, fix oil leaks, fix all the rattles and squeaks and patch the few small rust spots. I just wanted the car to be more like new and give it a nice new shiny coat. The only way I know to really do it right is to start from the bottom up. Beside just look at all the cool cars on here and you know you got to do it too.

Ya like those hot babes, their like my own personal fan club, can’t have enough eye candy ya know:cool: . As for the rotisserie I better be using them since I spent so much time and money making them. I just don’t like the idea of being on my back trying to scrape and sand blast the bottom let alone trying to spray some paint under there. I plan on doing as much work standing up or “sitting” down as I can:D .

Dude for the amount of work you are doing and having 2 more in the wings to do, you would be crazy not to! When I built mine, I thought I could do it for a lot less than what I did, all though you could if you went without the jacks and all. I still bet that sand blaster cost more LOL

Yea, I have one of her from Mr. and Mrs. Smith where she is showing a lot of leg too! whoohoo LOL. I have a shed full of some Nascar drivers that I need to part with to make room for some car parts. I thought one day I would have a large basement in which to display all my car toys and such, you know, like a bar / game room. Now that I know that’s not going to happen, I plan on sinking what money I still have into doing the Z.

Just an update, was getting anxious to get it down to the shell so I didn’t want to wait till I get back from the Carlisle show. It’s only minus the gas tank, bumper, and the rear end assembly however I was able to finish fabbing up the mounts so that I could attach the rotisserie. It was a good thing too because I needed to push the car over to one side to get the rear end rolled out of the garage with out taking the springs and such off. What I wouldn’t do for a pole barn LOL.

Brian
06-25-2008, 01:24:52 AM
Well, as promised, I started removing the interior once I got back from Carlisle this weekend. The interior is probably the cleanest part of the car as you might be able to tell from some of these pictures. I got the seats, console, head liner, shifter, all the trim, dash pad, steering column, parking brake, some wiring, and some of the heater components removed. Didn’t get to down loading the pictures but will try to do that after I finish the removal, I have been trying to tag everything and bag all the fasteners with their appropriate part so hopefully I can remember where all this stuff goes. I have also been taking a lot of pictures to document screw sizes and their placement along with positioning of wire harnesses, brackets etc. Really slows the removal process down but hopefully it will help me out in the long run.

Here are some more of the pictures I took, I thought the floors were going to be ok since they had so much oil underneath but I did find some rust under the driver side. I guess over all they weren’t to bad considering, I was actually surprised at how clean the floors were after taking out the sound deadener and underlayment. What do you think?

Brian

This car has been Ziebarted, which might have something to do with it being in such good shape, but that stuff is everywhere. I can’t even imagine what it’s going to be like trying to clean it up and try to weld patches in. From the pictures I have, you can see that the toe board /lower firewall section is rusting out where the metal over laps. I haven’t seen this piece offered for a 79, has anyone else?

Yes I was planning on using new carpet even though the old carpet was in decent shape. I was holding on to it until I finished this one and since my daughter wants a 2nd gen, I thought I might even be able to use it if I found another one at the right price and it had bad carpet. I hadn’t really thought about selling it at this point in time but I might consider it to help finance this project. Thanks for the nice comments.

I wish my floors looked that nice............ Its coming along good job!

I have been fairly pleased how rust free it has been but I was bummed out when I did see those spots at the front of the floor and at the bottom of the firewall. I don’t think they offer a patch for the firewall piece so I guess I will need to fab that up myself. It seems to all be on a flat spot right where the panels over lap underneath so hopefully that wont be too bad to do----I hope. Thanks for the encouragement.

OK, it’s been some time since the last post but I have made some small gains (large ones for me LOL) I started by welding in a patch for the toe board and then finishing it with a floor skin. My first time at welding sheet metal, huge learning curve compared to heavy steel!

If you have seen my post from in the body section, then you know that I had it thermal baked and glass beaded to remove EVERYTHING. You also know that they finished early, I got caught in a light sprinkle on the way home and within a day the shell turned brown from surface rust EVERY WHERE, It seems that you are very limited on what you can prep steel with if it has been media blasted. Because of this I had to have it completely blasted again. Though I failed to take pictures of the rusted shell (too sick to my stomach to remember to do so) but I think the next few pictures can justify the effort.

I then proceeded to spend what seemed like hours of blowing off, vacuuming, & degreasing, only to spend hours preparing the garage to paint in using some epoxy paint. I was up till 5:30am hanging plastic, I could write a whole book on the problems of trying to make the whole ventilation thing work!

Now for any of you that have did this before, you should have warn us novices what a pain in the butt it is to get in the trunk area and such,
let alone painting when it’s 85 degrees! I sure could have used a small jam gun to get into those areas; all I can say is thank God for the
rotisserie! And now for the fruits of my efforts so to speak, here is the finished epoxy. There are still some small rust areas to replace but I
wont have to work around all that undercoating, rust, grease, ETC.

Amazing work Brian! That shell looks pristine form this angle! I'm sure like you said there are "spots" but sure doesn't look like many! Great work man! I'll keep an eye on the thread! Welcome to the board! Btw, it started out gorgeous!

Thanks for all the nice comments. It’s been a long road and hopefully I will see it all come back together. I just made out my shopping list and should have it all ordered by Monday. Now to work on the list of things I can do with out so I will have enough money to pay for it all:rolleyes:

Food: check, need to go on a diet anyways LOL.

Has anyone tried to replace an outer wheel well with out really cutting much of the quarter away?
