View Full Version : My 79 camaro
sandrider123 05-06-2008, 01:26:32 AM Hey everyone just signed up a while back for your site but I have been kind of lurking to get idea for my 79 camaro. Anywaise here are pictures I just purchased it a few days ago.

http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f228/sandrider123/DSCF0778.jpg
It has a 305 with a 4 barrel put on it, and an turbo 350 transmission, all interior i already brand new. Best part about it all I only paid 1400 for it.
As for my daily driver here it is, yes I am more of an import guy so I am kinda new to old muscle cars but here is teh daily driver it has alot of work its a 98 civic with an si conversion on the outside and a GSR motor swap.

what do you guys think?
KJZ28 05-06-2008, 02:28:04 AM Being your an import guy, it is interesting you bought that second gen as your introduction to American muscle! Good start!
What are your plans for the Camaro?
sandrider123 05-06-2008, 02:57:28 AM i love the second generation camaro's I am thinking probably just a basic 350 swap, try to get some power out of it and the one thing the honda dearly lacks maybe some torque lol. I already did some damage control and wired brushed the whole trunk and used a rust nuetralizer paint called POR 15 on it. It worked quite well, then using a shackle kit I put a slight rake on it. This car will be seeing alot of time at the strip so I am wanting to build it for straight line speed. I have corners covered with the civic.
sandrider123 05-07-2008, 06:55:26 PM by the way how easy is the 350 swap from a 305? I have done tons of import motor swaps but nothing with american iron behind it all......
79camaro2001 05-07-2008, 06:59:44 PM by the way how easy is the 350 swap from a 305? I have done tons of import motor swaps but nothing with american iron behind it all......
SUPER EASY!
You are just swapping parts from 305 to 350. everything will bolt on.
sandrider123 05-07-2008, 07:36:16 PM so kinda like honda b-series motor..
KJZ28 05-08-2008, 01:54:15 AM so kinda like honda b-series motor.. Dont know.
But any GenI Small block Chevy will bolt in there. These cars are super easy for swaps. A lot easier then your comp controlled vehicles. If you are going to the strip look into some traction bars.
Here are crate engines wiht good HP/TQ for reasonable prices.

Or you could always build your own.
sandrider123 05-27-2008, 05:06:34 AM SO here is an update I have the motor and tranny out, subframe is all torn off, and I am picking up a bare 350 block later this week for $100 And then I will start ordering parts for it. But my question is whats better for the subframe to sandblast and powdercoat or POR 15 treatment? My step dads brother in law does sandblasting so alot of the smaller stuff I am getting sandblasted for free, but the bigger stuff I will pay a little for.
sandrider123 05-28-2008, 02:58:40 AM anyone?
sandrider123 01-11-2009, 02:39:25 PM Alright So after a long past 6 months I am back. THe camaro had to get set to the side as I picked up another 98 civic that I have been rebuilding bought it from a friend for $200 and I am getting ready to wrap up that project within the next month or so. Which means I will be refocussing on the camaro I wouold post pictures but being a bunch of muscle heads something tells me your not to interested in the imports lol
FatnLow 01-11-2009, 02:54:37 PM Get that 98 sold and put the money into all the motor parts for the camaro build.

Sandblasting the subframe, then POR treatment is my choice.
KJZ28 01-11-2009, 04:44:13 PM I agree sandblast, then Por. Lets see some tear down pics!!
BusDriver 01-11-2009, 06:01:19 PM If you are building the motor from the block up anyhow, build it as a 383.
free power.
sandrider123 01-11-2009, 10:37:39 PM Once the hatchback is done I am going to use the money from that to buy a truck, looking to get about 6k out of that civic, And Yeah I will get some pictures soon. LOL like I said right now I have just honda civic teardown pictures
KJZ28 01-12-2009, 01:13:42 AM Once the hatchback is done I am going to use the money from that to buy a truck, looking to get about 6k out of that civic, And Yeah I will get some pictures soon. LOL like I said right now I have just honda civic teardown pictures
Ehhhh so what, its still automotive. Just because people dont like civics, does not mean that they have to buy one of you post pics. I like seeing car work no matter what it it.
sandrider123 01-12-2009, 02:15:47 AM Okay well here is the pictures of the civic HB:
When I bought it:
http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f228/sandrider123/DSCF0914.jpg
http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f228/sandrider123/DSCF0915.jpg
Loaded for the trip home:
http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f228/sandrider123/DSCF0917.jpg
At home work is starting to commence:
http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f228/sandrider123/DSCF0924.jpg
http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f228/sandrider123/DSCF0981.jpg
So this particular model of a civic did not come with any power options it just was not available in newer hatchbacks like this. So I decided to goto a wrecking yard and get doors loaded with all the power options and replace the wring harness which called for a new dash harness so I replaced all the wiring.
With the new power doors installed:
http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f228/sandrider123/DSCF0977.jpg
http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f228/sandrider123/DSCF0961.jpg
Getting rid of the "shaved look" and putting the bodyt moldings back in, yes that has all bondo a full 3/4 of an inch of bondo:
http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f228/sandrider123/DSCF0969.jpg
And the motor all installed:
http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f228/sandrider123/DSCF0955.jpg I did some head work to it and dropped a stronger rotating assebly into to handle about 25 PSI of boost. I wont boost it myself but I had the motor apart anyways and its cheap to build these things.
So now all that is left for the hatch is to take it to school and throw it on the frame rack and finish straightning it out and finish the front end conversion on it then I will throw a single stage paint job on it and sell the thing. There ou have it thats what I have been up to.
iregret 07-13-2009, 05:39:43 AM Any progress?
moreair 07-14-2009, 03:22:20 AM CAMARO! Your Camaro is rusting away. LOL
maxpsi 07-14-2009, 09:39:03 PM It's going to be difficult to make good power numbers with that sohc.
sandrider123 07-15-2009, 12:52:16 AM so updates are needed. First thing first, the civic hatch I got running and sold traded for a motorcylce and a 78 trans am plus 4k. The motorcycle I then sold as it was to tall for me( yamaha YFZ 426) now the trans am had some issues okay so alot:
http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f228/sandrider123/DSCF1148.jpg
within a week it went to this:
http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f228/sandrider123/DSCF1158.jpg
I pulled it all apart took the axle out, which I am using in the camaro since its a posi, now I was not going to actually going to crush it I started examining the car and realized I was lucky it did not full apart on there was only 2 bolts holding the front subframe on and the rear frame was completely rusted out. And then when I told my step dad to move the front subframe out of the shop using the tractor he set it on the trans am which collapsed the roof. Now the motor I sold for 800 it was a pontiac 400 with only 800 miles on a fresh rebuild.
So I was also taking collision repair and refinsh at school to, as part of the program I had to do an internship. Well with the economy so slow the shop owner asked if I wanted to work on my own car since there was nothing else for me to do. So he let me repaint my black civic coupe. Which came out like this which I did all myself:
http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f228/sandrider123/DSCF1187.jpg
http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f228/sandrider123/DSCF1186.jpg
Dent repair (let my mom borrow it)
http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f228/sandrider123/DSCF1190.jpg
Then to go with the paint had to do new wheels
Okay and now for updates on the camaro:
http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f228/sandrider123/DSCF1164.jpg
The new posi rear end all painted and ready to go.
http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f228/sandrider123/DSCF1141.jpg
I powdercoated the front subframe gloss black
http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f228/sandrider123/DSCF1142.jpg
And the control arms got a coating of silver vein
http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f228/sandrider123/DSCF1174.jpg
Displaying the energy suspension bushings.
And today fed ex dropped these off:
http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f228/sandrider123/DSCF1208.jpg
I also got brand new rear leaf springs for it from classis industries.
So my plans for brakes are to do C5 disc brakes all the way around. and the motor I am still trying to figure out what to do. I am kinda new to making power with detroit iron. SO any input would help I was thinking of using the SBC 350 I got in the shop already assembled rotating assmbly and putting some VORTEC heads on it and then maybe throwing some nitrous at it.
Now if I do this I was looking at buying a whole vortec motor for 700 is that a good deal?
mark.moore1689 07-15-2009, 10:10:17 AM great 79 but sell the ricer to get cool camaro stuff right away. There are tons of things to modifiy with.Get busy busy busy!!
FatnLow 07-15-2009, 10:34:56 AM 700 for a complete vertec motor I'm unsure. Does it have a 4bl intake on it? That is where the extra money comes in when changing to vortec heads you need a vortec intake manifold to match. I got to say you got motivation doing all of that swapping of wiring etc on that civic. Throw up a pic of how it turned out. Sounds like you are gathering some good parts for your Camaro also.
sandrider123 07-15-2009, 01:00:25 PM Sorry I am not selling my civic a currently have a 75 mile commute and with gas prices on the rise its not going to happen, not only that but it was my first car. And here are the pix of the hatch when all said and done:
http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f228/sandrider123/hatch014.jpg
http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f228/sandrider123/hatch027.jpg
http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f228/sandrider123/hatch003.jpg
The paint was also done by me to
iregret 07-17-2009, 04:56:40 AM I wanted to buy an early civic hatch, but ended up buying an SRT4 instead. What made you get into Camaro's? Be careful when you get it all done though. Driving a high horsepower RWD Camaro, is a bit different different that a FWD Civic. Especially if you want to start playing around with Nitrous Oxide.
carcrazed 07-17-2009, 06:17:49 AM Looks like a solid camaro. Just saw your posts. I think American Muscle and Import Rockets go fine together. I have the 79 z28 and a 2007 SI coupe.
I love em both for completely different reasons! Throw in my 08 Sky redline and i'm set for all seasons :) Didn't mention the 83 Dodge rampage or 94 SC2 coupe for good reason...lol.
FatnLow 07-17-2009, 10:39:51 AM Nice job on that hatchback refurb. Looks great. My dd is an 86 accord lxi with 275k. I can't believe the thing doesn't drop any oil in 3000 mile oil change. It still pulls down 30mpg average so I'm not complaining. It could be better but I need to drill out egr passages in the intake so the pgm-fi light doesn't comes on. Now you should be ready for Camaro mods. Lets see the pics. Kent
sandrider123 07-30-2009, 12:59:05 PM Thanks for all the replys and As for getting into camaros I have a family friend that they are camaro collectors they have Probably 6 of them this one was going to be number 7 and I saw it drove it. They said they were not sure about keeping it so I offered them 1400 for it and it became mine. I have always loved camaros one of the few muscle cars I like. I have had high horsepower cars and trucks before. I also had a R6 with nitrous, so fast wheels is not anything new but a full size muscle car with lots of power will be.
Carcrazed: how do you like the si? I have been thinking about putting a K20 from a newer si into my civic coupe but the focus is the camaro.
As for the camaro got all new steering components linkage aside for the steering box. I also have been talking to ebmiller about C5 brake upgrade stuff I plan on spending some money on brakes and suspension, I am going to try and modenize the car some to make it handle good.
BlueCamaro 07-30-2009, 02:45:01 PM you can make a muscle car a corner carver too.. junk the imports, get some suspension upgrades... then you can have straight line and sone good turning ;)
RockerMomsHotwheels 07-30-2009, 05:39:18 PM Thanks for sharing...I personally like all kinds of makes and models, to me its more fun that way...Some like only Fords while others just like Mopars some like american over imports...Whatever...I like variety and when cruising around looking in back yards I find more cars to check out...As for small carvers, I'm also building an aluminum V-8 fiero...
Very cool stuff you have going on, keep us posted...
blah_ha 07-31-2009, 01:04:49 AM not trying to be a smart a$$ but i thought it was for camaro projects not ricers? me personally i owned a honda that was a black hole for money. it cleaned me out and i got nothing in return. keep up with the 79 camaro that is what i have.
sandrider123 07-31-2009, 01:46:33 AM ^^^ your right this place is for camaros but if you read you noticed some people were wondering why the progress on the camaro was going so slow so i showed you. And the main reason I am into hondas s becasue for whatever reason I find them way easier then any other car to work with. Yeah thats right to me its easier to pick up a laptop and retune a honda using graphs from a tuning program then using a screwdiriver to tune a carburated motor. But I do love old muscle cars more. Anyways the camaro is now the focus so you probably wont see much of the imports
maxpsi 07-31-2009, 09:58:22 PM I've had both also. Both seem to be money pits. If you want a return on your investment, cars aren't the way to go. You'll never get back what you put in.
sandrider123 08-01-2009, 01:17:07 AM I have been flipping cars for quite some time though the camaro will not be getting sold I never plan on trying to even come close to breaking even with it. But in the past 2 years I have had probably 13 cars, all except for one I made a profit of roughly 1500 a piece on. If you do it right and you know how to sell stuff ou can make money doing it but its no way to make a living.
sandrider123 08-03-2009, 02:03:20 AM so today i painted my center drag link, tie rod sleeves and idler arm today a bronze color that way when it comes assembly time its all ready to go together. I left the tie rod ends black to give some contrast.
sandrider123 08-10-2009, 01:40:53 PM So this morning I went and got this stuff:
http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f228/sandrider123/DSCF1217.jpg
Its all the brackets and lines for the c5 conversion. Big thanks to Tobin@Kore3 for just letting me cruise over to his house and pick them up. I only live about 20 min it from him.
http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f228/sandrider123/DSCF1220.jpg
Picked this up also to give it a bit of classic feel to the car.
http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f228/sandrider123/DSCF1219.jpg
And U bolts to get the ass end fastened in.
sandrider123 08-14-2009, 01:46:15 AM Got the spindles modified then painted today:
http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f228/sandrider123/DSCF1223.jpg
http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f228/sandrider123/DSCF1224.jpg
lostdude 08-14-2009, 10:38:35 AM I believe you picked a good year camaro there ;)
I wish I had the resources available that you do but I know you'll do it justice. Good start so far!
iregret 08-20-2009, 06:54:35 AM Good job so far! Did you get the C5 stuff mounted up? Tobin is a great guy to deal with. I picked my stuff up in person too. Nice guy.
sandrider123 08-26-2009, 01:46:49 AM Yea the modified spindles and eibach lowering springs are now on the car.I removed the rear axles and waiting to take them to have them machined down. Justin where did you take yours? I was just thinking carquest in albany. I have all my calipers just waiting for abutments and pins and all teh good stuff to show up.
3SLO5 08-26-2009, 09:04:45 PM just take your new rear rotors and have the back machined on the brake lathe to get the axle to fit, its cheaper and faster than getting the axle itself machined.
http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y296/3SL05/c5%20brakes/IMG_3832.jpg
http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y296/3SL05/c5%20brakes/IMG_3836.jpg
sandrider123 08-27-2009, 01:55:49 AM your idea seems to work but to me anytime I hvae to replace a rotor I would be redoing it. the axle seems like a better idea for long term
sandrider123 09-18-2009, 02:27:05 PM So got my axles turned waiting to put them in hopefully tonight maybe, Got new bearings and seals to put in also since im there I might as well right? Also got my new quick ratio steering box inand some of the steering linkage hooked up. Also since I have it out I am rebuilding the steering shaft. Also my hhubs are suppose to be here today for my front for the c5 conversion. And then next week I am getting my stuff from gmparts direct, which is rear abutments pins boots and rotor for all 4 corners then start saving up to get some wheels and tires. Probably go to tire factory tomorrow while I am in portland getting my gf's car tinted. Nice thing about the tire factory I am going to my car club is sponsored through them and the camaro was put on the sponsored list, which means I get products at cost and also services are free.
andrew1977 09-18-2009, 06:07:20 PM looks good!! gotta say.. i like the look of that hatch back civic, i think it would be lots of fun to drive.
keep up the good work, looks like you are very skilled at what you do.
BlueCamaro 09-20-2009, 08:11:23 PM looks good!! gotta say.. i like the look of that hatch back civic, i think it would be lots of fun to drive.

MUAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!
sandrider123 09-21-2009, 12:55:55 AM funny thing is I have an asian friend who drives an s2000 i swear he could replicate that picture to the T lol
sandrider123 09-24-2009, 03:59:36 AM Brakes are mocked up:
http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f228/sandrider123/DSCF1364.jpg
http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f228/sandrider123/DSCF1365.jpg
Pads need to be purchased then installed.
Then Before steering shaft assembly:
http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f228/sandrider123/DSCF1367.jpg
Then my batteries died before I got assembled pictues.
Then i try to keep my girlfriend entertained in the shop to so she keeps me company:
http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f228/sandrider123/DSCF1366.jpg
Picture of me and said girlfriend
http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f228/sandrider123/l_a09076c4d41642199669c2088b84b4cf.jpg
sandrider123 09-27-2009, 12:53:15 AM So today I spent like half the day underneath the car with some cleaning materials cleaning all the gunk off the bottom underneath I found the facory coating and only one rust spot in the whole floor bad thing is its right above the frame rail so to fix it I have to pull the front frame back off. Also wll be ordering wheels and tires on monday. Then maybe start looking for some sound deadening material
sandrider123 10-22-2009, 12:15:43 AM So today I picked up a 98 Z28 Front clip no motor or trans though. I am using the dash out of it to do the 4th gen interior swap. I have been reading the extremefirebird website and I was kinda thinking about going all out as he did and doing the heater core and everything as he did. Any thought on this? I will post some pictures within the next day or so.
sandrider123 10-23-2009, 03:07:42 AM Here are the pictures of the front clip:
http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f228/sandrider123/DSCF1386.jpg
http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f228/sandrider123/DSCF1384.jpg
I already took the dash and column out.
http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f228/sandrider123/DSCF1385.jpg
Should look pretty sweet in the 79:
http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f228/sandrider123/DSCF1383.jpg
sandrider123 10-24-2009, 11:20:22 PM Picked up a welder today so now the real fun begins
sandrider123 10-25-2009, 11:46:14 PM So today I stripped the interior out of the camaro. So I could get ready to start my interior conversion. Here are some pictures:
http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f228/sandrider123/LS1%20conversion/DSCF1387.jpg
Heater core out of the 98 z28 going to retrofit it to the 79 firewall.
http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f228/sandrider123/LS1%20conversion/DSCF1388.jpg
I am going to cut the hole out of the 98z's firewall then weld it into the 79.
http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f228/sandrider123/LS1%20conversion/DSCF1390.jpg
Cut the airbag out so now I can put the dash back together and start fitting it in
http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f228/sandrider123/LS1%20conversion/DSCF1393.jpg
And my new toy:
http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f228/sandrider123/LS1%20conversion/DSCF1395.jpg
Only paid 350 for new in the box got to love craigslist.
sandrider123 11-05-2009, 01:46:24 AM got the floor backet from the 79 steering shaft on the 98 steering shaft so now I can get the 98 steering column mocked up and weld the bracket up then I can start on the dash......
sandrider123 11-11-2009, 10:42:33 PM So started the 4th gen dash swap today. Here are some pictures:
http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f228/sandrider123/LS1%20conversion/DSCF1415.jpg
No looking back now!
http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f228/sandrider123/LS1%20conversion/DSCF1417.jpg
one of many mock ups to come just getting the trimming so it does not have any interferances then in Dec. I hope to get the rest of the stuff set up for my welder then I can start the real fun.
3SLO5 11-12-2009, 12:31:10 AM i cant wait to see this, its gonna be fun to get that in there.
sandrider123 11-14-2009, 02:32:40 AM Yeah I am excited to undertake the interior swap, I like challenging myself and out of the motor swaps and dash swaps I have done this will top everything on the comlicate-o- meter LOL
duaneorr333 11-14-2009, 03:02:07 PM Holy cow, you have quite the project going, especially that dash swap. You're doing great. Keep it up :)
sandrider123 12-29-2009, 01:45:52 PM So no pictures yet but just a update got my steering column mocked up, just finally got my welder all set up yesterday thanks to some cash from my father for xmas. So hopefully today or tomorrow I can tack all the stuff in place for the column then take it out and weld all the brackets and stuff up. With allof my current health issues (waiting on a knee surgery and pending diagnosis of chrons and possible surgery for that) I am taking a term off from school I figure with at leat one operation and maybe another I dont want to risk not being able to make it to class and failing so i am taking a term off which will also give me some extra time to work on the car. So start checking back for new updates
sandrider123 12-30-2009, 12:44:05 AM So like I said got the steering column done for the most part, still need to actually clean up the welds then prime and paint. After getting going its clear that I need some practice welding its been a while so dont hate on the welds to much. But here is the column all welded up:

I will try yo do some work on the dash tomorrow, If not that then maybe the heater core how much I get done will depend on how long my dam doctors appt takes.
Oh and a photo of the new tool all set up:

sandrider123 01-09-2010, 04:39:52 PM Made some more progress, currently working on making a brake pedal design that will work with all the newer camaro sensors. Basically using the old bracket but going to weld in the tab that mounts the brake pedal switches in from the 98 setup.
http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f228/sandrider123/LS1%20conversion/P1080004.jpg
The piece that is circled I took out my drilling out the spot welds and once teh brake pedal is done then I will hook it up so I can see where to weld in the bracket from the 98 to hold the switches.
http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f228/sandrider123/LS1%20conversion/P1080005.jpg
Here is the new steering column with the 2nd gen floor bracket welded in. welding skills are getting better but still need to improve.
http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f228/sandrider123/LS1%20conversion/P1080008.jpg
http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f228/sandrider123/LS1%20conversion/P1080007.jpg
I almost got it lined up to where I want it I just need to start making tabs to weld in to mount the Dash to. For me to get it to sit right I had to remove the lower side brackets by drilling out spot welds also. once its sitting right and mounted I will have to fab up new ones of those also.
another part of this is project going High end fast is to use the HVAC from the 98 camaro to do this I took the frame that the 98 uses to mount the heater core to and removed it from the 98 firewall and will be mounting it to the 79 firewall then I will remove the sheet metal thats inside the hole and that will allow me to mount the firewall. Which i stole the idea from this guy:http://www.extremefirebird.com/Home.html
Only differance is I am doing this on a camaro. Also there really is no progress pictures just start and finish pictures so hopefully someone can use mine as a referance. So here is the picture of the initial mesurement:
http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f228/sandrider123/LS1%20conversion/P1080006.jpg
Also sometime next month I should be getting some money so I plan on picking up the DSE quadra-link kit with the complete GM 12-bolt so I will be able to keep my Corvette C5 Rear brakes. So that is just some little updates. Looks like the car will end up costing way more then initially planned but oh well it will be worth it in the end.
sandrider123 01-12-2010, 01:17:20 AM So did some more work today got the dash and steering column both in and started welding in the mounting tabs:
http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f228/sandrider123/LS1%20conversion/P1110025.jpg
http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f228/sandrider123/LS1%20conversion/P1110026.jpg
http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f228/sandrider123/LS1%20conversion/P1110027.jpg
http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f228/sandrider123/LS1%20conversion/P1110028.jpg
Next is the bottom brackets then once thats done I will drill holes in the tabs and weld nuts to the back side to run bolts into then box the tabs in on one side to give some added support. I personally used the metal part of the dash that I trimmed out made it easy since they were the same guage of metal:
http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f228/sandrider123/LS1%20conversion/P1110034.jpg
Also cut on the heater core frame some today and think I might finally have it positioned where I want it and DAM its TIGHT:
http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f228/sandrider123/LS1%20conversion/P1110024.jpg It will require some modding of the cowl to clear but oh well.
http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f228/sandrider123/LS1%20conversion/P1110031.jpg
Some of the old stuff which I will be selling sometime soon as well as the blue carpet, with the front and rear seats, if anyone is interested let me know.
http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f228/sandrider123/LS1%20conversion/P1110032.jpg
Also going to take this allout in favor of a 12 bolt and quadralink. to bad the leaf springs are literally brand new. Remember kids thats why planning the project is important otherwise you waste to much money LOL. Anyways howabout some feedback guys?
As of now this is how it sits:

BonzoHansen 01-22-2010, 10:02:32 PM Nice, I applaud the effort. that HVAC is gonna be a bear.
sandrider123 01-23-2010, 01:18:59 AM the worst part will be having to remodel the upper cowl to make it work
SupplySgt 01-23-2010, 04:22:37 AM I like what you have going so far. Especially with the interior. I was tossing around the idea of using a 4th gen interior and now I definitely know I want to do it. And that also proves the 4th gen steering column can be used too. Awesome man!
Racinhonda450 01-25-2010, 08:24:22 AM Looks nice. I'm going to come clean now I got a Honda civic as my dd too cant afford to drive the camaro all the time plus the winters I need some thing good on gas and cheap to repair so I can put more money in the camaro
falloutboy 01-25-2010, 11:22:10 AM Holy fucking crap
dammed that looks awesome!!!!
I didn't know that something, anything like this was even possible.
This just looks soooooo fine.
And dammit you work fast and fucking good.
Keep us informed. :)
Greetings
P.S. Nice GF you got there :shy:
sandrider123 01-28-2010, 10:09:31 PM Hey nothing wrong with owning a honda people flick me crap about owning one but whatever it served its purpose and its what got me into customizing cars so oh well.
Anyways thanks for all the comments I love feedback so its nice to see some. as always here are some more pictures of progress from today:
http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f228/sandrider123/LS1%20conversion/P1280036.jpg
http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f228/sandrider123/LS1%20conversion/P1280037.jpg
Yes that is looking through the cowl to the floor as there is going to be some remodeling involved to make the HVAC fit.
http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f228/sandrider123/LS1%20conversion/P1280038.jpg
http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f228/sandrider123/LS1%20conversion/P1280039.jpg
http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f228/sandrider123/LS1%20conversion/P1280040.jpg
Like I said alot of cutting and fabbing. if your going to try the dash swap thats not to bad but if you do the HVAC you better have some dam good fab skills around cars. And yes it takes some major guts and patience to be willing to do it. But feel free to ask questions if anyone is interested in doing the same.

ATM 01-30-2010, 07:54:34 PM Ka-chow!!! Nice!
sandrider123 02-26-2010, 02:11:55 PM Well tried my luck at making a 4th gen brake booster work:
http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f228/sandrider123/LS1%20conversion/P2250070.jpg
At this point it will mount to the studs that the second gen uses for its booster. However I think I found a better way to make this all work. I am going to try and make the complete 4th gen pedal assembly work instead:
http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f228/sandrider123/LS1%20conversion/P2250071.jpg
Unfortuanately that calls for some new parts, Oh well thats just part of this trial and error.
Anyway also removed the steering wheel and airbag detonator from the 4th gen column mainly to make it easier to test fit stuff.:
http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f228/sandrider123/LS1%20conversion/P2250069.jpg
sandrider123 04-04-2010, 11:54:45 PM Not a whole lot of progress to report, got the hvac actually bolted in just trying to decide if I am happy with the fit and seal. still got to clean up the mounting bracket. Also made a block off plate for the drivers sider upper vent and will be making a lower one as well. Also made a block off plate for the old blower motor hole and got that welded in but I lost some of the pictures here is a couple from tonight:
http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f228/sandrider123/LS1%20conversion/P4040045.jpg
Hvac from the insider bolted in and the start of another black off plate.
http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f228/sandrider123/LS1%20conversion/P4040048.jpg
Had to do a massive clean up as a friend is bringing her 70' SS down for me to do a clutch job.
http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f228/sandrider123/LS1%20conversion/P4040049.jpg
Where all the old interior is sitting now I really wish I could find a buyer but oh well its out of the way now.
Also going to be getting the material to build a rotisserie once the clutch job is done.
Thought or input is welcome
sandrider123 04-06-2010, 12:40:45 AM So been working on this the past couple days and got alot of blockoff plates done:
http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f228/sandrider123/LS1%20conversion/P4050003.jpg
http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f228/sandrider123/LS1%20conversion/P4050006.jpg
http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f228/sandrider123/LS1%20conversion/P4050001.jpg
http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f228/sandrider123/LS1%20conversion/P4050005.jpg
I also had the 4th gen heater core in with the 4th gen dash over it and the 4th gen steering column as well so that is pretty exciting. And of course using weld thru primer to keep my weld joints from having issues in the future
ATM 04-06-2010, 12:42:59 AM Looking good, this is fun to watch.
sandrider123 04-09-2010, 01:33:40 AM So did some more working and welding on the passenger kickpanelt block off this is what I Have so far:
http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f228/sandrider123/LS1%20conversion/P4080009-1.jpg
http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f228/sandrider123/LS1%20conversion/P4080008.jpg
I will probably do a little more welding and cleanup on that then I will move to the cowl and the work on that will be fun.
Also did some more work on the wiring:
http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f228/sandrider123/LS1%20conversion/P4080010.jpg one of the two harnesses that I have.
Also hoping to do another major mock up this weekend I will be installing most of the vent systems back into the dash then putting it in with the HVAC in and see how well they line up. if they dont I may have to do some cutting on that and do some fiberglass work.
ATM 04-09-2010, 08:05:06 AM Looks like fun. Nice progress.
sandrider123 04-16-2010, 02:07:49 PM Well I just ran into a massive speed bump, or alot of them so I have the HVAC in there and get the dash in and they dont line up worth a dame. now I know how to take care of that. so thats not that bad I was going to simply make an extension that protruded from the HVAC and connected to the dash vents. Also crawled under it and found some massive damage on he underside did some more investigating and found the whole car has some been diamond so it was hit on one side in the past and now everything on that side is shoved forward. So now I am at a loss of ideas of what to do..... Any ideas?
ATM 04-16-2010, 02:18:54 PM Are you saying that the car is racked?!
sandrider123 04-16-2010, 02:34:12 PM precisely, at this point I dont know if its worth to go any further on it or not. I am going to see a frame shop today but if you take a straight edge there is a 5 inch difference from the frame rails being square looking at it now I am surprised it drove down the road straight
3SLO5 04-17-2010, 11:16:16 PM got any pics with the dammage? im interested in what it looks like.
sandrider123 04-18-2010, 12:47:42 AM No pictures its kinda hard to catch just looking at it but I will see what i can do. But its kinda hard to see hence why I have almost 2 years worth of work into the thing without noticing it. what set me off was some massive stress marks between the two rails and then I got to looking into it closer and found it But I will try to get some pictures soon
evildoer 04-22-2010, 07:19:07 AM http://portland.craigslist.org/wsc/cto/1704041972.html thought i recognized it
sandrider123 04-22-2010, 01:34:37 PM Yeah its on there I already had a few people call on it when I told them about the frame issue they lost interest guess I should put that in the ad. It would be nice to recoup some of my cash out of it. I actually have one car that I am looking at for a thousand so it would be nice to get something out of it. If I cant find a buyer then I am taking it to the scrap yard. Right now its really just good for the body parts and I still have alot of parts for it. I do know I am not going to get that much out of it but I figured its to help pad it for the people who try to work me down. Update though I did get the subframe taken off so I can put it on whatever I get next weather it be Firebird or camaro
evildoer 04-23-2010, 10:55:41 AM ya hard to know what folks will pay for what, maybe you'll find somebody lookin for some replacement sheet metal. kinda fun seeing a forum member show up in other local things though :)
sandrider123 04-23-2010, 11:31:11 AM Not only that but it sucks because I payed top dollar for the car thinking it was as straight as an arrow. And now end up selling it as a wrecked car and I didnt wreck it. The best thing would be to find someone that does need sheet metal. Like I said though if I cant get anything for it off to the metal shredder it will go. I guess I need to goto the swap meet section and list the fenders and all that fun stuff because I am positive I am going to go with a firebird for the replacement.
