so my i had a leak and found out it was the pan, i installed a new pan gasket and it solved the prob for a week. then today i wake up and dirve and the car wont shift like before?? wtf?? it goes into redline before it hits first...so i assume it needs fluid so i install 2 quarts and no luck :whine:  and then the car starts smoking because now it leaks again ..so what could it be?? i had a new carb installed and the thing was great yesterday and now its lagging only on first, all my lines are good and tight.

vacum modulator line, unhooked, leaking or so fourth. Most times its a metal ine with rubber ends coonection, they can split with age or the line can get a rust hole like a brake line.

thanks fly but i checked that too..now it leaks fluid again and it shifts harsh
but the hose is conncted

or just a bad modulator, it controls the low speed shifts, govoner controls wide open shifts, which are allot higher...........
An aftermernet adjustable one is cheap. either red or black strip. I got one and adjusted it so it waits till around 35 before its shifts out of 1st. That way I can leave folks at lights without getting on it. Though if your just real light o nthe pedal it will shift through all 3 at any low speed.

hmm i didnt know that ..where can i get one?/ will this make my car shift quicker?
04-04-2008, 04:03:55 AM
When a mod goes bad they can leak or you'll go low on fluid as the engine is sucking it up. When you get on it real hard you should see smoke if its sucking it up.
04-04-2008, 04:04:54 AM
it smokes big time ..your on to something fly

ONly if you play with it, will it change anyting over stock, they come preset to stock adjustment. Can't member which way you turn them to lower or increase part throttle shifts......
Sort of like a vacuum advance, ya stick a small screw driver down the vacuum port to adjust.
Just hit ebay or any auto store. same one is used in the th350 350c n 400
"adjustable vacum modulator"

also how hard is it to change and can i damage my car if i continue to drive it like this?
04-04-2008, 04:12:46 AM
Yes or no, probably hurt tranny first running low, burning ATF really won't hurt, foul plugs maybe.
Its easy to change as long as the bolt comes out. 90% of the time sit siezed in the case and breaks off. Had to buy a 90degree drill bit attachment, used a drill bit to drill it out. Then I used a nut and bolt to re attach rather then fixing threads. If it freezes up in there next time, easier to just cut the bolt and replace........... As it just slides in the trans, there is just like a ear clip like on a dizzy that holds it form falling out. I actualy held mine in with a bunji cord for a few days till drill out.
I wnet round n round with that stuff as I had smoke when on it hard.
Even adding zip ties to make sure rubber ends were on tight.
In the end tunred out to be oil, I had the typical lower intake port leaks when hard in it, sucking oil.

Oh also when changing, ATF is gonna run out like crazy, be readyto slide the new one in. But since I had to drill mine to make room I cut the nose off the old one and jammed a tip off a calk gun in it to plug the hole and have room to drill.

hmm?? my tools got stolen so im taking it to a trans shop, what do u think would be a fair charge for this?
04-04-2008, 04:21:53 AM
nasty oily pic of my trans, but you can kinda see it. The tab just keeps it from blowing out, just and ear it bolts down to, can see bolt and nut.
Though I got a new trans to install this weekend if weather works with me. No more oily one.
04-04-2008, 04:23:08 AM
I dunno, they will probably find more to do then that. I hate them places.
Just changing it if the bolt comes out nice, is a 5 min job.
04-04-2008, 04:23:39 AM
pic didnt show all i c is a red x
04-04-2008, 04:26:28 AM

i can do it myself, thanks you fly u kick ass and saved me 65 dollars already.. if its rusted ill give in
but the leaks look exactly like yours
04-04-2008, 04:32:01 AM
so its just that bolt there..right?
04-04-2008, 04:32:16 AM
Its not oily from leaking, it never was on mine, I was sucking oil throuhg intake.
It just typical greasy GM stuff there. Engine was, was like that before fixing intake and valve covers......
04-04-2008, 04:34:33 AM
mine is all over the place even on the mufflers and i did the pan for nothing
04-04-2008, 04:34:39 AM
Yep just one, 1/2in 9/16 maybe..........
Long as it comes out easy to cool.
But it is an aluminum case and a steel bolt....
harborfreight sell the 90degree drill attachment cheap;)
I didn't wanna pull the cross member to change it.
04-04-2008, 04:36:13 AM
so assuming it come out nice and easy how tight shoud i torque it?
04-04-2008, 04:39:00 AM
Though I had planned to make the frame and under body even more oily....
Don't have cash or the time to have it all pro cleaned and coated right.
Was gonna take my old 1gal pump garden sprayer, fill with old oil I have saved and mist down everything ;) Should save thing from going any farther for a few more years.
04-04-2008, 04:40:43 AM
Just hand tight like a dizzy hold down, not allot.
04-04-2008, 04:45:02 AM
whats a dizzy hold down ??:o
04-04-2008, 04:46:05 AM
once the weather clears im sure youll get it going.. if its not one thing its another, these cars sure have a way of testing my patience..
04-04-2008, 04:46:52 AM
distrubitor, called a dizzy cause it spins....

hand tight is plenty.
04-04-2008, 04:48:42 AM
thanks alot ill let u know what happens tomorrow
04-04-2008, 04:52:34 AM
Well mine is "fine" I just don't have faith in it anymore.
It did some funky things so I did a flush, filter change and fill and ATF was pouring out the front seal. Let it sit over night pissed, came out. start it up and no more leak. And hasn't leak since, been working nice since flush n fill but I don't trust it. Why I spent the $1,200 of discover cards money to get a new one, that way I know I can just drive and go anywhere. Engine is all good, new intake, carb, ign system, all new brakes and hardware, new rims and tires, whats a new trans too ;)
04-04-2008, 04:57:27 AM
this trans in my car is rebuilt so i guess its just this and it should be good, nothin like a new though
04-04-2008, 05:01:53 AM
Yep, 3.08 1st gear, shift kit, 5 clutches, new 2200 TC, can't wait to nail it;)
