I'm stoked to have a musclecar again! Since selling my 70 Nova SS 350/300hp to build our house in 94 I vowed to buy another real car someday. Little did I know it would take about 15 years!
I did manage to buy a 92RS that I've always wanted also and have just finished restoring it.
Last August the time finally came to go car shopping again and the money was burning a hole in my pocket! I scoured the web and auto magazines and basically went nuts talking to way too many people in a weeks time.
I narrowed it down to a second gen or a 67-72 Nova as first gens are too far out of reach.
It ends up the first and only car I looked at was the one that followed my daughter and I home from Indy that day!
http://i137.photobucket.com/albums/q218/lanogr8/72%20Camaro/katie032.jpg
After haggling with the "Import Auto Mart" owner about pricing and dealing with some of Indy's less desirable begging for money and scaring the crap out of my daughter we struck a deal, I threw one chain around the front crossmember and hightailed it out of there until we got further down the highway where I secured it more thoroughly for it's 300 mile trip home.

Once home it was time to give it a more thorough inspection and thank the lord that I didn't try to drive it home as the engine compartment was a jumbled mess of cross wiring and some truly scary things done by the dealers "chief mechanic".

The plan all along was to buy a "driver" that looked decent enough so as not to be embarrassed while going to shows and cruises with friends. I do paint & bodywork part-time so that was the least of my worries on this car. Best I can figure is it was probably repainted in the past 5 years and it 's actually not bad from 30 feet. They did a quickie on the door jambs, etc. but the body cleaned up quite well and should get me by while I tend to the mechanicals first.

The first weekend I tackled the engine compartment. I basically removed anything I could down to the longblock and went to town with Simple Green and a few spray bombs. I sandblasted the hinges, the intake and assorted brackets, put a new water pump on along with belts, hoses, plugs, etc. I also bought a new Mallory distributer as I couldn't get a miss out of it. It don't take much people too turn the grungy into something respectable!

Once I had the car running good and the engine compartment squared away I turned my attention to the outside appearance of the car. Overall it wasn't that bad of a looking car, it just had some bald tires, loose bumpers and various lights that weren't functioning.
http://i137.photobucket.com/albums/q218/lanogr8/72%20Camaro/Katie034.jpg
http://i137.photobucket.com/albums/q218/lanogr8/72%20Camaro/Katie037.jpg
First thing I did was dismount the tires and sandblasted the rally wheels. I then went and bought a set of 225/70-15 BFG's to go on all 4 corners. This gave it more of a stock look as it did have some 275/60's on the rear. In hindsight I should have gone with a bigger tire on the rear as they look real skinny from the rear but it rides real nice! I finished them off by installing flat center caps as I've never liked the bigger style.
I knew the car was just way too green looking and figured I needed to give it some contrast so I layed out the Hockey stripe on the computer and an hour later had em on the car. These were just temporary until spring when I plan on putting the original style silver stripes on it.
The hockey stripe never fails to get a comment as people either love it or hate it on a second gen but it certainly broke up all that green!

Plans for the spring include a new set of wheels/tires, the stripes, new window glass, fuel sending unit, sun visors, seat belts and lots of piddly stuff!

All in all, I'm happy with the purchase and accomplished my goal of finding a car I can drive immediately and not get bogged down by tearing into a full resto right off the bat. I just spent 2 years restoring my 92 and am quite burned out so I just want to drive this one as is for this summer, then next winter I'll start on the subframe and replace a couple pieces of metal that need attention before repainting it.

I'll post it all right here as I go along, thanks for tuning in!!

Nice ride.............it looks like you had a decent car to start with. It's amazing what some de-greaser and some paint will do to an engine bay! The stripe sets the car off IMO. Keep it up!!!

You said you made out the stripes on a computer? Are they stickers?... How'dja duit?

Yup, they're vinyl. I just took a side shot of the car, put it up on the computer and did the stripe freehand to follow the contour of the car. Once I had the image how I wanted it I simply put in the measurements of the car and let the plotter do the rest!
I've had a sign shop for 11 years now so it wasn't really a big issue.:D

Ok, so I was getting razzed alot about having the 69 hockey stripe on the car and did something about it! I only did that when I first bought it to break up the green a bit and it was fast and easy.

Over the weekend I added the stripes in silver which I over-thinned so they wouldn't be so glossy and just had a nice sheen to it.

After that, I put on a set of Big n Littles I had sitting around and also a set of Lakewood Traction bars. WOW! Brings me right back to cruisin in the late 70's/early 80's!!

I love the way it looks but it rides a whole lot worse and wanders something fierce with those skinnies up front.
I'll keep em on and have fun for awhile until I get the set of 17's that I want though.

Amazing how a car can change attitudes over a weekend!!

Wow! Love the car. Do you have some kind of parts depot in that garage to just “throw” on some stuff you have laying around. I like how you just decide to put on some stripes or whatever like it’s no big deal LOL. Nice car.

Thanks for the compliments guys!

No Brian, I don't have a "parts depot" but I do have a collection of stuff I've accumulated over the past 25 years. I'm a pack rat and happen to have a lot of storage space which makes it even worse!

As far as the stripes go, as with any paint project, planning and preparation took 3 times as long as the actual spraying. I took the measurements right out of the assembly manual and just started measuring and taping.
I don't mean for it to come across as "easy" as it sounds it's just I've been doing signs, graphics and painting for 15+ years now so I tend to skip a lot of the details as its almost second nature when doing it.

Before I did the stripes I also repainted the entire spoiler and a 1/4 of the roof as they both had "issues". This car is a 20 footer at best and I'm just making it look the best I can until I give it the full resto treatment in the not so distant future.

Note to mod - Can you change the name of this thread to Chevrolaine's 72 Chevrolet??

Alright boys and girls, time for another update.
I've done nothing but drive and enjoy the $hit out of this car since last summer but I was always leary of driving it too far as it looked like the suspension had NEVER been touched.

It's time to fix that. I'm not sure where this is gonna lead too but I'm hoping to just pull the subframe, rebuild it, paint the firewall and generally spruce it all up like new again.

But then you never know what your getting into once you start tearing these things apart!

As it sits in my barn.
http://i137.photobucket.com/albums/q218/lanogr8/72%20Camaro/72002.jpg
Thought I'd just make it simple and just remove the whole clip at once, never done that before!
http://i137.photobucket.com/albums/q218/lanogr8/72%20Camaro/72008.jpg
I was quite happy to see there wasn't much rust repair on the fenders or lower firewall! Sweet, I like easy fixes!

Ok, just got in after a bit more wrenchig.
Out comes the 400/Saginaw 4-speed. The 4-speed was a major factor in doing this in the first place as reverse was all but out of it, so I needed to replace the trans with something. Not sure if I'll go with another 4-speed or a Turbo 350 yet.

The original idea was to rebuild the subframe, put it and the motor back in and drive it again - OH how things go astray!!

Pretty safe to say this car won't be green when it goes back together!

Since I was going to paint the firewall and fenderwells the same color and to do it right I blew apart the front clip.

http://i137.photobucket.com/albums/q218/lanogr8/72%20Camaro/72047.jpg

The fenderwells and radiator support will be off to the blasters later today where they'll come back nice and clean like the subframe and control arms did! Love clean parts!!

I never really liked the gap in the header panel when it really doesn't need to be there so we welded that puppy up.

and walah! Much better IMO!
http://i137.photobucket.com/albums/q218/lanogr8/72%20Camaro/misc934.jpg
Blasted and primed the backside also.
http://i137.photobucket.com/albums/q218/lanogr8/72%20Camaro/misc933.jpg

Another little project I was working on is the firewall lip. I didn't like how it just stuck straight up and was somewhat uneven. So I removed all the caulk, hammered it over and welded it shut basically.
http://i137.photobucket.com/albums/q218/lanogr8/72%20Camaro/misc847.jpg

Then put a sea of mud on it.

Great progress! When you fixed the subframe mounts did you cut out the old and weld in the new pieces or just place the new pieces over the old and weld? Welds look great BTW

We just placed em over the old. Probably not the right way but I don't think an 1/8 inch will make any difference.

Started sanding and realized this ol thing has 14 coats of paint on it!
http://i137.photobucket.com/albums/q218/lanogr8/72%20Camaro/DSC00186.jpg

So I ended up scraping off 5 of those coats with a razor blade...saved a lot of sanding discs and had the whole thing done in a few hours. It literally peeled off.
http://i137.photobucket.com/albums/q218/lanogr8/72%20Camaro/DSC00167.jpg

I then sandblasted the door and trunk jambs. Found a few small holes in the front of the door jambs but nothing serious.

My son graduates tomorrow so I needed to get the barn clean and empty for the party next weekend and had to get the camaro from this barn to an adjoining one but was sorta perplexed as to how to move it without the front suspension on it.

Leave it to my Ironworker brother in law to come up with an idea...LOL
Whatever works man, whatever works!

Take one 20' long 3" angle iron, slide it along the tunnel and up over the rearend and walah....make leverage work for ya!

http://i137.photobucket.com/albums/q218/lanogr8/72%20Camaro/DSC00216.jpg

Nice looking project you have there. You might want to take a look inside the cowl area where your rust holes are on the door hinge pillar. mine looked similar to yours on outside but was loaded with rust on the inside. It was rusting from the inside out. Heres a few pics of what i found, hope this helps.

Not really happy with how the top fits. We may end up welding a piece in here as I don't want that much filler in it.
http://i137.photobucket.com/albums/q218/lanogr8/72%20Camaro/DSCN0566.jpg

Other than that it actually fit pretty good!

I'm here! Very cool. Looks like a lot of work, but coming along rather nicely.

I pretty recently learned about AMD from watching the muscle car shows on Saturdays. I caught your bit about the filler panel and stuff, but is that quarter from AMD? I'm kinda surprised about the fit (or lack of it) at the top if it is an AMD part. They brag about their quality so much on TV.

Do they claim that the sheetmetal is made in the USA? Forgive me if that's a ridiculous question.

Congrats on the addition, BTW. You're a busy man. :p

Started work on the new AMD rear filler panel this weekend.
http://i137.photobucket.com/albums/q218/lanogr8/72%20Camaro/DSC08335.jpg

There are four of these attachment points where the factory welds were removed to get the old panel off. Luckily, only one of the tabs on one of them was rusted off also. You definitely want to save these intact as much as possible so you have something to weld the new panel to.
http://i137.photobucket.com/albums/q218/lanogr8/72%20Camaro/DSC08338.jpg

Only thing wrong I noticed on the new panel was the cut out for the fuel tank studs was off about 2". Not sure of the reason for this??
We just cut some new ones that lined up with them.
http://i137.photobucket.com/albums/q218/lanogr8/72%20Camaro/DSCN0679.jpg

One other thing we weren't expecting is the extra little filler piece that you need to fill the space between the quarter and the filler panel. This piece pretty much assures any debris getting between the two rear panels.

Here's the left side piece we cut to fit in there.
http://i137.photobucket.com/albums/q218/lanogr8/72%20Camaro/DSCN0690.jpg

lol Can never have enough clamps!!
http://i137.photobucket.com/albums/q218/lanogr8/72%20Camaro/DSCN0678.jpg

Crappy pic and brother already primed it but new panel is on and fit perfect.
http://i137.photobucket.com/albums/q218/lanogr8/72%20Camaro/DSCN0682.jpg

Also had to put a new trunk dropoff on the driver side. Boy this is NOT fun when the quarter is still on the car! Not replacing this quarter as it's fine except for a little dent in the very rear corner that we pound out once we had access to it.
http://i137.photobucket.com/albums/q218/lanogr8/72%20Camaro/DSC08342.jpg

Not fun but you can get a little cutoff wheel in there to get all the old off.

Sure enough, this one does also.:( Gotta fix that!
http://i137.photobucket.com/albums/q218/lanogr8/72%20Camaro/misc1476.jpg

Started on the gap of the door also. Had to trim about an 1/4" off the back edge then we'll add a bead of weld and grind it till it's right.

A bit against the grain here as this is where most would start scraping off all the old undercoating and spraying on the rust colored primer. No offense, but unless your going after a 1000 point restoration I've never understood the point of removing undercoating.
This is a driver and I want as much undercoating and sound deadener as possible so I'm just scraping off all the loose stuff, replacing the front drivers floor board, respraying everything in truck bed liner and calling it done.

I'll also replace all the brake and fuel lines while their easily accessible. Next winter I'll pull the rearend and paint it and put new springs in.

These replacement rear tail panels are known for having a dip on the right hand side. I've noticed it on a lot of pics on here and other sites and thought I better fix it.

Yup, Harry is right Mark. She'll have nothing but Hugger Orange with White stripes. I'm gonna change it up a bit and do the outlines in black though as well as the tail panel.

I woulda preferred a Silver/ Charcoal combo myself, but in the end it's her car.

HUGGER ORANGE!! Man people stop and stare when they see it. Just the other day this older guy then us lol!!Lets just say I didn't think a person could turn there head that far a round.

I'm glad I don't have any kindof complexs because all the stares would be freaking me out!!!

I like the Idea of doing the black out lines around the stripes!! I'm glad we added the blue pin stripe around ours. That finished the paint job IMO!!

As we continue..... lol
As you can see from the pic below, the dash is about normal and warped to hell along the top. The rest of it is perfect and I just can't see spending $300 for a new one that will most likely do the same thing eventually.

http://i137.photobucket.com/albums/q218/lanogr8/72%20Camaro/2011-04-26124403.jpg

So I decided to take a bit of a different low buck approach to fixing it. (Purists will want to run and hide here)
One piece of 60" x 1/2" x 1/16" aluminum angle stock...
http://i137.photobucket.com/albums/q218/lanogr8/72%20Camaro/2011-04-27114401.jpg

Drill and chamfer holes at equally spaced distances-6" apart in this case.
http://i137.photobucket.com/albums/q218/lanogr8/72%20Camaro/2011-04-27120551.jpg

I used stainless screws to attach it. Sucked that warp right on down. :)
http://i137.photobucket.com/albums/q218/lanogr8/72%20Camaro/2011-04-30163159-1.jpg

Once painted, I think it looks perfectly acceptable (hey, they had visible screws in first gen door panels!)

Got the firewall and inner fenders painted. Not exactly the satin that I wanted but will have to do. I used a hardener in the paint and it tends to make it a bit glossier.

I just discovered this thread yesterday and it is awesome! I'll now be using your subframe/frontend build pictures as my reference.

What type of nuts/bolts/hardware are you using to re-assemble the suspension? Are you reconditioning the originals or using replacements?

What is the sealer you are using over the welds?

What paint are you using on the silver suspension components? It looks great.

Thanks Andy, I appreciate it!

If it wasn't a special type of bolt or bracket, I try to find a new replacement one for it at the local Ace or Farm and Fleet. Bolts are cheap and their appearance makes a huge difference. Just wish the shoulder bolts were more readily available.

When I do the final assembly assembly of the front end I'll be ordering a complete bolt kit from Ground Up Restoration Parts.

What is the sealer you are using over the welds?
I've never used any sealer over the welds, just grind em and prime it.

What paint are you using on the silver suspension components? It looks great.
That would be the Rustoleum Hammered Series in Silver and Grey on the steering box.

Thanks again and have fun on your build.:bowtie:

I'm worried about pinholes when I weld in panels, so this earlier step caught my eye. I don't know what 'liquid metal' is.
Spent today grinding welds and applying liquid metal to cover any pinholes.

Ah yes, forgot about that. Liquid metal is just like a bondo filler that 3M or Bondo brand makes. Just dries a lot harder. Go with the 3M stuff, comes in a little squeeze tube at your local parts place.
