For those that don't visit the Competition section much. Rather than posting all the pics, here's the Photobucket link.

Dang! Can't wait to see this finished!! Looks like quality work your doing there.

I'm working on it! I got some more done today but forgot the camera. I'd consider myself a novice chassis guy right now. I'm doing this mostly myself. The boss is just helping out where I'm not sure of things and he'll do all the tig welding.

Keep posting pictures because there are questions...but I'll wait to see what your doing before I ask. haha

I sure will like seeing the progress.

Are you going tub with a 4 link?

KylePBZ
02-24-2008, 08:23:13 PM
It will be sorta mini tubbed. I'll be able to fit about a 30" tall tire but can go as wide as I want. I'll be running 315/60 radials or 29.5x10.5+ on 12" wheels. I don't personally like the BIG tire look. I prefer the 10.5 look. It'll have the heads up look but just be a bracket/street car. Keeping the "stock suspension" but it will be easy to change to a 4-link should I decide to later on.

Go ahead with the questions!

OK,,,

What's up with cutting the sub frame that way? I understand the bar in the middle for extra pan clearance but cutting the front and back rails short and the engine cross member in half up to the frame is where I get lost and don't know what the direction your heading.

It does look like good craftsmanship and I'll be watching this one...might even get to see it in person.

OK, all of the sub frame mods are just for weight savings. The center part also opens up more room for headers. I wanted a Smith Racecraft tubular sub frame but can't swing the $2000+shipping for the bare unit. http://www.smithracecraft.com/70_81_camaro/C1FHC.html I cut off a little over 60lbs there. I'll only be adding about 5lbs of that back. The front horns are 10lbs ea., the center was 20lbs, the rears are 10lbs each. I'm putting the TRZ rack so the front stubs aren't needed. I have to have "through the floor" sub frame connectors so 1 5/8" chormoly tubing is a lot lighter than that stock subframe. I'm also doing a tube radiator support so that will knock off over 20lbs. Along with Autofab Race Cars tubular A-arms, fiberglass fenders, bumpers, and a few other things here and there. Should be less than 2,800lbs when I get done.

edit* I forgot that I hadn't figured in the rear floor/frame removal. That stuff was over 100lbs. .024 steel to replace it won't weigh much at all. So close to 2,700lbs race ready without me in it.

Couple more bars in since the other day. Got the back of the funny car cage and the rear frame rails sat in.

Thanks again everyone! I would have got more done tonight but on Thursday evenings there's always half a dozen guys stop in to BS for a while. So, I only got the inner rear valance cleaned up, plated, and the frame rails actually fitted and tacked in. More to come Saturday!

I'm trying! I should have the cage and suspension/steering all together in the next couple weeks.

Good deal! Let us know when we can help you out.

I will talk more with you...but I want to save as much as I can (as usual) so maybe the off season and not quite as extensive as what your doing...

I'm thinking ladder bars with coil overs and a 6/8 point cage/roll bars and no tubs...

KylePBZ
03-10-2008, 12:20:23 AM
Yeah for sure. Mine wouldn't be near this elaborate if I didn't work there. A 8/10pt. cage and ladder bars is a great setup that would be good down to 8.50 in the 1/4 and shouldn't break the bank. lol

It's really looking good. I assume this is a 25.5 or you going to do a 25.2? What class are you going to race and what are your plans for power?

Ya, 25.5. It's just a bracket car but you know how the "go faster" bug is! I just wanted to do it once for as fast as it will ever go and not have to add on or upgrade later. It's still all "stock" suspension too but will be easy to 4-link if I ever decide to. Keeping the same power plant I ran before, 421SB, AFR 220's, solid roller, etc.. It ran the times in my sig with only bolt in frame connectors. Should make a lot more efficient use of the power I have.

It will have a stock looking VFN fiberglass dash, carpet, headliner, door panels, Kirkey Pro Street seats, the rear side plastics and sail panels. The rear floor will be .024 steel and carpeted like the rest of it. So, it will be as stock appearing as possible. Not a big fan of the all aluminum interiors. This thing will still be driven some.

You have to be pretty precise with the chromoly. Can't leave near the gaps you can if you're mig welding it.

Looked at your sig pic, beautiful car by the way!

That will be cool to see the interior put back in...glad you decided to keep from just panelling it up and calling it done. That platform is going to be plenty rigid once all of that is welded up....very cool.

The cage adds 1.32lbs, per foot! So, somewhere in the 150-175lb range. But I cut out 100lbs in the rear and 60lbs out of the subframe. Along with a bunch of other weight saving stuff. I'm looking to be about 2,750lbs without me in it when it's all together.

Did you still want the 'glass rear bumper? I'm going to put a coat of hi build on it this week so its 'sand and paint'.
Actually I want to make my door bars swing outs if you have/make kits...

Oh ya! I've been so busy with all the other stuff I've had to buy that I forgot all about it. How much were you wanting again? We have swingout kits but I'm not sure how much they run. I'll let you know tomorrow evening.
