I don't know where to start with this thread. I can't locate the pics from when I first bought the car and you guys have seen most of the pictorials on smaller projects so.....

I don't think I ever posted up the final version of the fuel door emblem as it's mounted.

http://img235.imageshack.us/img235/8479/emblemot9.jpg

I'll only cover this Winter's engine swap project now.

Old one on Left................................... New one on Right.

Weiand Action Plus. It's basically a Performer clone and should fit with the stock air cleaner and my rebuilt Q-jet. (I have a back-up plan if it doesn't. ;) )

Screwup in the shipping. Wrong street address and the zip code got wiped off the label in transit. It took two weeks to find its way here.

More pics when I get it cleaned/painted.

Oven cleaner to take off the heavy crud.
A scuff pad to finish it up the cleaning.
Paint prep. (Mineral spirits stuff.)
Two coats high-temp aluminum paint followed by two coats of clear.

I got this intake for $45 (shipped!) on Ebay.... It turned out very nice for the money and a couple hours of work. :D

One more step forward....
http://img89.imageshack.us/img89/1420/intakecarbaircleanercw2.jpg

This is my "Back-Up" plan for the air cleaner if I run into hood clearance issues with the Weiand intake and the stock (tall) 4-bbl air cleaner cover.
(It's a 1" shorter, 2-bbl lid but raised off the carb with 1/4" spacer.)
This combination gives me plenty of room for the 3/8" higher intake while retaining a stock "sleeper" look. :shy:

Yes, I know. I'll need a shorter stud.

Thanks to Damon for shipping me the lid and Rick (AGAIN!) for letting me use his blasting cabinet to clean these pieces!

The newly cleaned, tweaked and rebuilt carb is actually under there.
I guess clean doesn't matter much when it's completely hidden. :(

No... that was with the TH350 and 2.73 rear gears.

I needed a NastyZ break.... I've been having too much fun in the garage today not to share it with all of you! :D

Thanks again to Rick for using his pickup and lending a hand to get this new addition in my garage!!!

Ther'es a reason they're called "Crate" engines.....
Loading it was easy at the dealer... Unloading it with an engine hoist went well after we took the top/sides of the crate off.

Crate off... Mounted on stand, Balancer installed and intake set in place.
http://img89.imageshack.us/img89/86/uncrateengineql0.jpg

I don't have my hardware kit yet so I just set a few things together to see how it looks. (I already repainted the new paint on the new water pump.... Cast grey didn't do it for me.)

They were satin aluminum before I tried to polish some spots out of them.
Now they're polished aluminum (but far from perfect.)

There will be NO chrome (none, zero, nada) in the engine compartment.
Not one bracket, bolt or aftermarket "bling" piece. If it's shiny... I polished it. ;)
I even ordered a stock dip stick and tube from GM in order to avoid sticking an aftermarket chrome one in the block.

12-pt, black oxide, ARP bolts.
http://img134.imageshack.us/img134/8117/boltkitkx8.jpg

The big brown truck showed up with my bolt kit today! :D

There's quite a few bolts in this kit I probably won't use. I will use the bolts I already have for things like the alternator bracket because they won't match the other accessory brackets if I only change those.
I will be using this hardware on the fuel pump, water pump, motor mounts, intake and maybe the headers. (I'll have to see what the hardware kit with the Hedman shorties looks like before I make that decision.)

Hmmmmm..... Do I want to bother with oil pan or timing cover bolts?
I guess I could swap them out one at a time but I'm a little leary of messing with them at all.
Who will ever see the oil pan bolts?

Well.... I'm off to the garage to make some more progress!

I hope they don't. :(

I installed the intake, valve covers and water pump last night.
I changed out the timing cover bolts for the ARP ones too. No problems there.

Note: The ARP valve cover bolts weren't long enough for cast aluminum covers and the metal/rubber gasket I'm using.

My new headers came today and I've trial fitted them to figure out the hardware situation. They seem to fit great!

Note: The ARP header bolts aren't long enough to be used with the thick (3/8") flanges on the Hedman shorties.

There is no way in heck you can tighten a couple of the 12-pt bolts either. (Wrench/socket won't fit.)
I am using the hardware that came with the headers.
The ARP header bolts will be used for accessory bracket mounting instead.

I'm going to wear out the holes in this block trying so many arrangements of bolts.

How much stuff can I leave on the engine and still fit it in the engine bay?

The way the headers fit (Hedman shorties) .... I think I could loosen them so they hang down and in a little.... They might fit while attached to the engine! (I could put the spark plugs in too.)

I have the motor mounts, intake, water pump and fuel pump on the engine now.
All other nuts/bolts and brackets are in place (finger tight).
I can pull most of the stuff off in seconds. (Putting them back on always takes more time.)

I've got the plug wires routed and held with spacers so I should be able to drop the cap on the dizzy and the wires will fall into place.
(I'm gonna number the wires too... Got noobs helping out this weekend. ;) )

This could be a very quick installation if I can have the headers, plugs and starter in place.

Fuel pump might foul you on getting motor mount bolt through. With AC, maybe leave one header on and one off to give some wiggle room. If radiator is out should go in easier too. Good Luck and post up when ya git er in !!!!

Who you callin a noob.

gordonquixote
03-05-2008, 12:46:04 PM
Ehhhh. Take out the radiator and you can fly a 747 in there.

I shoehorned a big block, bellhousing, 4-speed, with fuel pump and intake in all at once with no issues. Just make sure your hoist chain can't slide (a couple of small clevises on each side of the chain mount are added insurance).

I had to raise the motor up off the mounts about 2" to get the drivers side header on.

Putthe dizzy in after the engine drop in so you don't smash it on the firewall.

Don't sweat it....you got it.

68400BIRD
03-05-2008, 12:55:02 PM
Terry, I'm not tu sure about the headers but then I have never worked with shorties. With just putting in the motor the dizzy should be ok if in but it's not a bad idea to take it out.

68400BIRD

I'm surprised you have not trial fitted the motor in the engine bay yet.;)

Twisted_Metal
03-05-2008, 12:57:14 PM
The radiator has been out since before the engine came out.

The dizzy will go in after the engine.... Gotta prime the oil and it's far easier to get to the tranny bolts and harness brackets from on top without the distributor in there.

I checked the clearance for the motor mount on the passenger side. The bolt can go in from the rear with the fuel pump in place. It would be a very close fit with the starter in place.
I like to connect the wires on the starter before I bolt it to the block. So... the starter will go in from the bottom.

I've got to go shopping.... Header gaskets, oil, filter and beer!

Almost forgot... new belts too!

I'm surprised you have not trial fitted the motor in the engine bay yet.;)

I considered it!
I've been using a tape measure instead. ;)

I'm sure I'll have some last-minute stuff to do on Sat. morning.

Shall we start at Noon?

I don't think we'll be firing it Saturday because the exhaust won't be in and shorty headers would be pretty brutal.

BTW... Hedman doesn't warranty their high temp coating for engine break-in.
(I'll have to read the rest of the instructions.)

The parts guy at the dealer said a full 20 minute break-in wasn't needed for these crate engines..... "Just prime it and go.... It's under warranty."

The parts guy at the dealer said a full 20 minute break-in wasn't needed for these crate engines..... "Just prime it and go.... It's under warranty."

What do you need me to bring?

Priming tool??

Anything else???

Don't count on it. On mine the distributor was 180 degrees out right off/out of the crate. Wayne and John still did a 20 minute break-in - regardless.

Perhaps the actual conversation was different but what this says to me is. I dont care what you do give me your cash and move along its under warranty. Perhaps im wrong im just not very trusting that way.

I "think" or "thought" that some one told me that they run them in on LP before they crate them up.

I "think" or "thought" that some one told me that they run them in on LP before they crate them up.

Yes... They do. You could see a wisp of carbon on the exhaust valves when I peaked in through the ports. There was oil in the corners of the lifter valley too.

This isn't a GM Perf Parts engine. It's the Universal replacement 350.

It makes sense for them to pre-run them to be sure they are sending a good engine to their dealers. Dealers don't want to tie up service bays and technicians for engine break-in precedures or find they have a bad engine on first fire and have to redo it.
I clarified the warranty.... There is no requirement for a GM tech to install it or inspect the installation. Just keep the receipt. It's warranted from the date of purchase..... 3 yrs or 100,000 miles.

I then asked how they could warranty an engine if they weren't involved in the install, start up or break-in.

What the guy at the counter said was: "You don't need a break-in. Drop it in and go. They've been run... we do it all the time. Follow the start-up procedure and it will be covered under warranty."

He was basically saying.... Quit being a Sally and drive the damn thing already! :shy:

I made an executive decision last night..... The engine is going to be installed with the shorty headers in place! (I'll notch the frame before I give up on that idea.)

I mounted the headers last night. I used the Percy's Dead Soft aluminum, reusable, burn/blow proof gaskets and torqued them down good. (They squish a lot!)

I measured the gaping hole between the frame rails and around the tranny..... There's room to spare with these headers. You could almost install them by tossing them in from across the garage! I don't see any clearance issues with them going in while mounted solidly in place to the heads.
Much easier to torque them down good BEFORE your access to those bolts by the A/C box gets limited.

Let's plan on meeting around 10 AM.

Rob... Antifreeze.
Rick... I've already got your hoist and stand. Bring a bottle opener. ;)
Pat... Oiler and dial-back light.
Terry.... Garage, car, tools, engine, hardware, beer and pizza.

Don't count on it. On mine the distributor was 180 degrees out right off/out of the crate. Wayne and John still did a 20 minute break-in - regardless.

They had the distributor right.... just got the engine in backwards!

I want to thank Rob, Rick, Ricky and Pat for pitching in on this project today.
I would have had a conniption if I was trying to do this job myself.

I wanted to fire it up today but it just wasn't in the cards. :whine:

We blew about 3 hours trying to get some "performance" motor mounts to work. They sat about 1/4" too high and the combination of the two proved to make it impossible to sit the engine down.

http://img299.imageshack.us/img299/9646/motormountsxq0.jpg

A trip to Autozone for different mounts cured that issue. (Thanks, Pat!)

We had a good time and we were eventually successful in planting the motor in its new home! :D

http://img177.imageshack.us/img177/9159/engineinstalledpg0.jpg

Rob was right... I should have test fit the engine. ;)

BTW.... We proved that installation with shorty headers bolted solidly to the block is possible!!!

I plan on firing it tomorrow to make some noise and a video.

I just ran it @ 2000 RPM for 10 minutes. It never went much over 160* (stock gauge, 185* thermostat.)

I don't want to push my luck with the neighbors or hearing loss.

My ears are ringing and my neighbors must be wondering what the racket is about. Open shorty headers make side-dumped "Cherry Bombs" seem tame!

Gotta get to work on that exhaust system after finishing a couple details under the hood. (wiper motor, cruise control and a little rerouting of some wires.)

There's still a little paint smell but the headers didn't discolor at all and the carb seems pretty close to where it should be. I didn't get any nasty, eye-burning exhaust either. It's running petty clean. :D

I think we can consider this a completely successful engine install!

I've been working on hanging the exhaust..... I've got the muffler and pipes hung. I won't hang the tail pipes until everything else is in place.

The THRUSH 2.5" system fits beautifully!
They give you plenty of length in tubing (gotta trim it down).

There is enough there that you could connect shorty heders if you had a way to fabricate a 45* bend and flare on the end of the extensions.
Long tube headers would be a straight bolt-up job after shortening the pipes a bit.

I just ordered 2-45* elbows to make the connection. They will need to be shortened and welded to the the extensions. (I'll probably have a local shop flare the extension ends and weld them here once I get a good fit.)

I'll have pics when I get the elbows to show what needs to be done to make this system work.

One step backward......

I noticed a little dribble of oil on the tranny while I was figuring out the exhaust fit at the headers..... The rear of the intake manifold is leaking fresh oil on the new clean engine. :(

I thought I got the rubber strips to seal.
I bolted up the intake while the engine was on a stand and it all looked good.

This time I'll use RTV on the ends.
Too bad I got everything else assembled in the engine compartment before I found the leak, I'm just glad I didn't have the hood on too.

I'm still hoping to get the exhaust done this weekend. The intake may have to wait a few days now.

Minor stuff Terry with the intake leaking. Using straight RTV on the ends is the way to go.

Well, if those rubber seals don't leak when you fired it up...it will later once the rubber gets hot a few times and dries out and shrinks and gets brittle. RTV is your friend on those ends of the intake and then a big ole gob right where the metal gasket ends. I like to use the high temp red...but others have their preferences.

Cutting them on the car.... You wouldn't get a neat cut.
They will work fine the way they are.

For me.... It's a perception thing from looking at shorter, smaller, stock tailpipes for 30 years.

Even if the intake did have a slight warp the bead of silicone that you put on should have been more than enough to make up for a minor tweekage in the intake. Did you let it set up before starting it?

You're supposed to assemble the parts within 5 minutes of laying down "The Right Stuff". The instructions say to "Torque and Go" with it.

It's thicker than Ultra Black RTV and doesn't have that greasy feel to it. It's more the consistency of thick toothpaste.
I can't imagine it didn't stick to freshly prepped surfaces. (The intake, block and heads were scraped and wiped squeaky clean with brake cleaner.)

It was well over an hour before we started it by the time we got everything else back in place.
Maybe I should have waited over night.... I dunno. :(

68400BIRD
03-17-2008, 02:44:23 PM
I sit possible that you have a leaking oil sensor or a leak from your dizzy? You can try rubbing a bead on the outside of the intake and then let it set up over night and see if that helps.

BTTB71SS
03-17-2008, 02:48:02 PM
Terry after we got that baby running nicely you still have a leak.....

I wouldn't have waited over night to place the intake on though. You did everything correctly. We just need to find the culprit of the leak.

What the hell...Could be a warped intake but I would check the oil sensor or the dizzy area for leak. You could do what Rob suggested and place some on the outside of the intake and block....

Twisted_Metal

Dizzy and sending unit are dry.

I only find oil if I sneak my hand between the block and firewall on the passenger side. I get a bead of oil on my finger tip when running it along the seam between the block and intake. It could be from the head corner and following the seam but it's definitely the intake.

It's kind of far fetched but could it be a valve cover leak that is finding it's way down the intake. The only way that could happen is oil splashing around inside the valve cover and getting on top of the upper gasket surface and then soaking through. Grasping at ideas here.

BTTB71SS

Rob that an interesting idea but could be a possibility.

Mr_Z27
03-17-2008, 08:38:34 PM
If your intake was that warped that you could'nt get the ends to seal, I would think that you would have serious vacuum and oil burning from air and oil getting sucked into the intake ports. Yes, brand new intakes are not always straight and true (ask me I know) I fought with mine for 3 years before finding out that was the problem to my excessive oil consumption in my engine. I took mine into a machine shop and had it checked and sure enough it was out of whack so they trued it up. I always knew the oil consumption was coming from leaking intake gaskets but could not figure out why as it was a new intake and I tried 3 different kinds of intake gaskets.

I'm with Rob on this one, check your valve cover gaskets.

Twisted_Metal
03-17-2008, 10:26:45 PM
The valve cover gaskets are perfectly dry every place I can get my finger on them. :D (Perma-dry plus steel core gaskets.)

It can't possibly be warped that much. I must have gotten a liitle air pocket in the very corner when I first pumped the goo on the rail and not gotten the very corner sealed.

I stuck a glob of the sealant on my finger and pressed it in as well as I could after wiping the oil off. I'm gonna let it sit until tomorrow to see if it helped.

Wish me luck!

Has anyone ever used the Fel-Pro gaskets with the self-adhesive end rails?

No hood tonight.... We were screwing around with the vacuum advance, timing, carb settings and brake bleeding. We never got around to it.

It looks like I had the vacuum advance hose hooked up wrong.
We moved it to a different port but that didn't help with the carb pop I get on quick acceleration.

I found the correct diagram and will properly route the vacuum stuff I have left before attempting the carb tuning again.

Twisted_Metal

Update:

I bought some new vacuum hose and routed the distibutor vacuum advance correctly.... It pulls even MORE advance into the timing now!!!!
(45* @ 750 RPM - idle. It was 35* when connected to the "wrong" port. 8* with the advance disconnected.)

Is it any wonder I get a carb pop on quick acceleration?

None of the local auto parts places carries an adjustable vacuum advance can. I'm gonna order one from Jegs.....

I tore apart the brakes on the wheel where the bleeder got FUBARed and replaced the cylinder. I managed to NOT wreck anything else! :D

Your highway mileage will be off by about 5 MPG and your plugs will load up with crud within just a few thousand miles. For a race car or a weekend street/strip car this is probably no big deal. For a street car, forget it.

Also they forget to mention that it is a contributing factor of higher engine temps.

I don't remember for sure if it was oneofkind67 or ignitionman who helped me out several years ago but once I got my HEI setup the way it should it made a world of difference.

Terry, I am pretty sure that "most" of the aftermarket vacuum advance cans in the mags are going to require the mechanical stop to limit your overall advance. I got mine from summit and after setting up the timing accordingly, the overall advance ended up way out in right field. Had to put in the mechanical stop on mine also.

However.... It's NOT a trailer queen. I'm pretty satisfied with it and think I've gone a little overboard on some things. I drive it several thousand miles a year and the hood only comes up every couple of months for general maintenace. I'll probably be pi$$ed the next time I open it and see something has leaked.
(I'm glad I found a PS hose leak today.... Stripped hose clamp. The fan was blowing it to the belt and beyond.)

I've still got an issue with the tranny. It doesn't want to shift to first from a dead stop. (Unless I manually put it there.)
I've re-adjusted the TV cable but it isn't cooperating yet. :(

The rear-end is still howling too. I'll probably have to take it to a GM dealer before this deal is resolved.

I guess these car projects are never perfect....

Restoration?!?

The car was "born" a V6.... There's almost nothing in there besides the A/C that came with the car from GM. It's all GM parts but much of it came from my 78. (Except the long block, intake, carb, valve covers, air cleaner and headers. ;) )
Only the intake, headers and valve coverrs are aftermarket parts.

I made it look the way I thought "The General" should have made it look from the factory.
I considered "Corporate Blue" at one point..... I don't think it would have looked as good with the red fenders as it does this way.
If I was restoring a Z28, I would have done it differently.

The exhaust note is very non-stock too.
My son heard it earlier today and said, "I can't lie to ya, Pops.... It sounds pretty bichin'!"

His car somes out of storage next weekend. I might have some competition for him this year! :D

Sounds good, nice work.

Me and my father go back and forth all the time. He's building a Cuda and his plans change depending on what day of the week you talk to him. One day it's "That Camaro will be seeing Cuda tail lights" and the next it's "Well it's only going to be a show car, I don't care if it's fast."
