Well this is my 80 Z/28 350/4speed.
I found this car under a tarp and knew by the silhouette it was a camaro :) talked to the owner and he sold it to me for $1500. on one condition that when i finish the car bring it by and take him for a ride.
It had been sitting since 93. Towed it home got it running runs great but latter found out it was not the original motor! any how i am restoring it, so far i have lots of new parts int, trunk lid, fenders , fender wells, radiator support and lots of other stuff powder coated.
I plan on having a stock appearance and a killer drive-train.

Was just looking at your pictures looks like you've made a lot of progress.I noticed the printing on your gas tank and was wondering if you can read the printing the is under the USS and what is printed after the United States?
I'm going to repaint my gas tank and thought it would look more original with the printing.

Thanks

Any surprises you did not expect?
Yes the short block was not the original, it had the original top end intake, carb, air cleaner and all the hoses looked original but when i ran the numbers it didn't match.
I ran the numbers the 350 block came from a 75 chevelle.
The 4 speed needs a rebuild not worried about it cause i was gonna rebuild it anyway.
Now i need some cutting torches to cut some bolts off.

Man great looking project so far. I'd say you got quite a deal for a Z28 with all the parts there!

PLUS I love that you plan on sticking with a mostly stock exterior appearance with modern drivetrain, which is what I'll achieve once I repaint mine its original charcoal with red stripes! Only thing is my 18" wheels with big ole brakes will give it away a bit, but perhaps I should make my own genre from a combination of other classes, Sleep Fighter perhaps?? :p

WOOT 800th POST!

Keep posting all the great photos though... you can have a bio of your restoration from begining to end here.

yea like i said you will never see them i will touch those up with some satin black beside you know how many ppl just use por15 while the frame is still on the car they never really get it all and if they don't blast then the quality shows thru the only way to get inside the frame would be to invent some type of spray wand ?

great work on the car i watched the thread when it started and didnt look into it till now, your progress is great and i see your going overboard with the powdercoat like i am, i found a guy kinda local and im on the powdercoat kick too. The guy i got doing sand blasting said he hates people that bring little crap weekly to blast so i guess im gonna get my own cabinet and blast myself and get him outa the picture and bring my parts directly to the powdercoater.

RICARDO1969
08-16-2008, 01:09:14 AM
thats what i do i blast all my stuff my self except for my subframe. i paid 100 bucks to have it blasted it came out better than i thought it would, when i have parts to be powder coated i drop them off to my buddy who gives me the hook up price! so if im getting it done this cheap i might as well take advantage and get as much stuff done as possible before the hook up price dries up.

HOW did I miss this thread? Great detail work. You may be more crazy about powder coating than I am. That's saying a lot. I would powder coat the whole car if I could.:D Keep the pics coming. Satin black is one of my favorite pc colors. I do have one question on the seat tracks. Did you take them apart, prior to coating?

I've been wanting to respond to your thread for sometime. I've been following your saga of restoring your Z-28. I have a 1980 Z-28, color code 79 (this was the original color off the build sheet) that I've owned for over ten years.

I bought it off the side of the road for $1200.00. It was complete under the hood but was trashed on the interior. It is camel tan and I had a camel tan interior in pretty decent shape in a standard 1980 V-6 I was working on. I ended up marrying the two together and eventually went basically frame up, replacing the front subframe. It was a nightmare for awhile.

This was before powder coating became popular so I had everything blasted and painted black. I would like to attach a few pictures of it but I don't know how.

I show it these days in parking lot car shows and rod runs. As with yours it's a never ending project, it's always evolving. I need to finish my interior.
I mostly wanted to encourage you to continue, looks like you are doing a great job and you will be rewarded.
All the best,
Tom

Ricardo1969,
Looking at your picture with the front end sheetmetal fit-up, I must caution you to check your front fender extentions for fit. I bought this same assembly about six years ago from NPD with a Goodmark induction hood.. the factory (O.E.M.) extentions did not fit the new aftermarket market fenders worth a crap. I had to send the fenders back and rummage through junk yards to find a useable pair of O.E.M. fenders. One other complaint I had outside of the fit was with the general quality of the fenders, way too light of a metal gauge. Maybe they have improved in six years because of all the returned fenders..
All the best,
Tom

I used some lacquer thiner once the gun was empty and it turned the left over paint into a gummy substance it was a pain to clean. It was a product called kwick strip lacquer thinner.

Well he showed me what the knobs were for and how to adjust the fan pattern pressure and distance of the gun from the material you are spraying.
kinda hard to put it all in to words. It's one of those things you have to see to understand i guess.

I did use por 15 on the trunk floor and frame rails. after it was dry i scuffed it down, cleaned it and applied the epoxy primer it looks so good i have decided not to top coat it.

Not sure how it could go bad being in a closed sealed can. I've never heard of a stripper lacquer thinner, just "lacquer thinner". Maybe there is a difference?

So is the under body just epoxy primer? Looks like you said that based on the comment about cleaning the gun. Curious because I am thinking about just laying epoxy primer on the underside and firewall.

Yes it it is black epoxy primer it dries to a satin finish it's a 2-1 product i posted pics of the stuff i used. I am going to leave it as is since i don't plan on driving the car in the rain or snow it will be fine.Oh and the firewall.

I belive it was red oxide primer. This epoxy primer sealer is far superior to that stuff. My car did not have the red primer it was like a dark brownish black type of paint.

Looking good! Be careful with those springs if you haven't done them before! They can be a very dangerous, I know they scared the crap out of me when I put mine in last week

ATM
04-13-2010, 10:01:19 AM
The springs were a bit scary, I used a spring compressor tool, I took off the top hooks, and put the rod through the hole in the subframe, use 2 washers (what I did not do), put grease in between them so one will sit on the subframe, and one will spin on the top nut. Then I put the bottom hooks wherever they wanted to reach on the springs. As you are tightening them, if they start to "pull" to the outside, you need to loosen it up and change the hooks so it "pulls" to the inside. I used an impact on the compressor tool, I only had the one washer, I destroyed the washer, and it was tough. I don't know if the two washer trick will make it easier, but it should. Once it is compressed, it is a cake to install the spindle. Good luck.

Yea i have installed coils b4 the rental too from advance auto broke and the spring rocketed out of the frame like a scud missile scared the crap out of me! Imagine if i would have had my hands down there positioning the spindle SCARY!
I am picking up a better install tool from orielly auto parts hopefully it will work if all else fails i will use the strap on the jack trick wish me luck lol!
