hey guys..well debating on whether to keep the points or switch to HEI...the points run great no skips or anything but i figuring with HEI it be more efficient and little more spark....I'm taking you just pull the old points distributor out and slide in the HEI and connect to 12V source and boom ready to go.... along with new HEI type wires...then just wrap up the old wires going to the old points coil into the harness.......am i getting the major idea?... and other thing will HEI fit good against the firewall?....lol:confused: :bowtie: :)

Depends on if ya don't mind changing points.
I like points and long as I ran dual coils I had no plug problems.
[made my own plug wire for the duals]
HEI can be better but don't be fooled. THere is a reason GM ditched the incap coil HEI. epoxy filled coils need air as the run so much hotter and tucked away in that cap kills. Heat is the enemy of spark.
Now I got HEI but I run external oil filled coil just like on points with a MSD external coil cap for HEI. They give just as much spark juice but the oil cools them, making it more reliable.
Yea an epoxy filled one may look newer n fancy n all the hype to do to sell em but the old can type ones just work better in the long run. Guy I konw who was a lead designer at GM who designed our cars ign system builds for race teams. He uses nothing but can type coils. And even then only 3 out of all made pass his spin test.
Here is one
SUM-G5215 summit chrome coil
MSD-8401 MSD external coil cap for HEI
CRN-99600-1 And ya gotta have the adjustable crane advance.

Maybe just swap to a Pertronix, Crane, Mallory conversion kit. Then you can keep the small cap and your wires. The Crane module even has a built in rev limiter.

if you switch to hei dont forget the resistor wire has to be changed to 12v. it s the whitesh cloth wire coming out of the firewall i think to the dizzy

if you can find a dual point dizzy like a mallory it'll be alot better than the single point because it allows more coil saturation

+1 ^ Yep, just switch over to a pertronix drop in module and one of their coils and your good. I've done the swap and it takes about an hour. If your gonna upgrade to HEI style ignition, get some new wires and plugs while your at it............

I used to love the points with my Tunnel Ram. I bought a mallory Unilite Dist and I love it. Works great with my set up at low or high RPM. I shift the car right around 9200 RPM and no problems

I had the unilite in my 70 for years without a problem. absolutely loved it!!
Does anyone still run points? they are sooo out dated.

i've got a an older mech adv mallory dual point with a tach drive i might put in my motor just need the mech tach and cable .i like dual points because there is so much coil saturation with both points firing and this help make for a hotter spark

still thinking about switching to HEI....just mainly for more efficiency and better spark....switching the wires ain't a problem.....lol
