...1978 monte carlo drum to drum rear end be a direct bolt in for an '85 grand prix?

yes the complete rearend will bolt in the lugnuts will have diffrent treads 78 std 85 metric and the inner pinion bearing is different. the bearing will only matter if you want to change the gears so you will have to ask for parts 78

Thanks, my buddy has his eye on the 78 monte rear with a 3.73 gear...he just wanted to know if it would be a direct bolt it for his 85 grand prix.
