Is anyone using this cam in a 9 to 1 compression 350 engine? How does this cam compare to the stock L-79 cam? I have power brakes in the car and wonder if the Elgin cam will cause problems. My rear gears are a 3.73 ratio, will the Elgin cam cause torque problems at low RPM? Thanks in advance, Bill

i think i have run that cam before just don't remember the numbers. let me look and see if i can find them.

I am assembling a new engine and this is the cam I am cosidering. The car will be street driven only.

I have run it. in a s10 with 3.73 welded rearend and 3500 stall. it had good midrange tQ

it has a 107 intake CL i run it 4 deg. advanced. The motor went from the s10 to a 1975 nova with power brakes. they worked fine.

Too much cam for the application.

Elgin 1029

Lift: .443"/.443"
Adv. Duration: 287/287
Duration @ .050": 214/214
Lobe Center: 112
Mild idle, improved power and torque, works w/stock converter

Elgin 922

Lift: .433"/.465"
Adv. Duration: 288/298
Duration @ .050": 214/224
Lobe Center: 112
Mild idle, good low end torque, stock converter OK

These are the cams you should be looking at

if he wants something to drive everyday without a big stall. i would pick something smaller. like a crane 272 you can pick them up cheap and do a better job with a street that you could enjoy

At 9 to 1 CR, I'd strongly consider running this one from PAW!!

It's a little sucker but should really produce some grunt!!

PN 10386 spec'd at; 266/209, 110/108, .414"/.414"........

I figure it is Elgin's E-919-S;

Last time I looked it sold for $44.95!!

Now if price is OK, then use a CC 260HE at 260/212, 110/106, .440" lift. But it's probably going to cost $120 or so...

As always, jmho..

And I wouldn't go bigger than an Isky 264 Mega at 264/214, 108/108, .450" lift.

And please note!! NOTHING fancy here at all for a low compressioned street engine.

Does Elgin make an L-79 (327/350) replacement cam? This may be the cam I should use.

The old -151 cam really need's 11 to one even tho I daily drove it for years in my 10 to 1 CR., L-48 350SS engine way back then.

And I figure this Elgin cam is their version of the old -151.

The cams that are listed seem to have very big ADV. numbers and small .050 numbers and I am sure the .200 numbers are small as well. Those cams seem to have a lot of unwanted over lap. and for a 9.1 engine they may be to big.

Are those ADV. numbers at .004 or .006



We use a 450 lift cam in some of our circle track engines that are 9.1

Adv. is 277 @.006
@.050 its 231
@.200 its 141

Its a very agressive cam and its an assymetrical grind and does make great power on restricted compression engines.

And we have them ground on a 108 lobe sep which will create more cylinder pressure then a cam on a 109 or 112 lobe sep.

A cam like this will create good dynamic cylinder pressure and with a 1.6 ratio would bring you up to 480 lift.

I was staying away from the custom cam jobbers unless he want's to call Delta and get one ground up on his core?

The cam E920P has 292 duration instead of 288. I know because I bought it two weeks ago. All of the ads in the catalogs say 288, the cam card that is in the box says 292.

where do they measure the 292 @ .006 or .004

if i remember right when i checked my cam it measured my cam and it was 293 on the intake and 289 on the exhast. with 231 on the intake and 229 on the exhast.

they might just be listing them at the lowest tolerance they have.

Fwiw, I have this cam in my about 9.5 to 1 CR., 406 so know about it!!

Buy the old cam that is the 280 /230 cam instead if you can still find it!!

I'm not sure where they measure the duration. My cam card doesn't say. I almost mailed it back, but decided to keep it.

These old cam are not SOTA, but nonetheless will still run good in a good street engine combination.

Just match the CR. to the cam like we should is all, imho..
