Camaro Super Sport Engines - the 396

The 396 was the largest production option engine factory installed in the Second Gen Camaro. They all actually displaced 402 cubic inches due to a .030 overbore but were advertised as 396's. The LS6 454 was scheduled as an option but GM management scratched it at the last minute. The 396 would last from 1970 until 1972, after this year, the Super Sport option, along with the big block would become just a memory. Any Camaro with a factory installed 396 would be a Super Sport. In otherwords, the only way to obtain the 396 was to check the Z27 option box, along with the big block option.

CTx suffix codes are listed w/ AIR. Block 3999290 was used in late 72.
General notes: Alternators unverified. AIR was installed in all cars. It was manditory for California delivered cars, but was typically quickly removed if delivery was to any of the other 49 states. So the exhaust will be equipped for AIR, but often times will be plugged.
