Heating & Air Conditioning

(under construction)
Cars without A/C are nice, simple and easy to work on. However, A LOT of cars, especially later in the 70's came with A/C.

MadMikes personal idea of A/C is to roll down the windows. However, for many folks (including my wife), they want functional A/C.

Retrofit A/C into your car with Complete A/C Systems including firewall if required.

Another source for complete A/C systems is: Vintage Air.

Heating & Air Conditioning FAQ
Some sanity savers - Disassembly tips:

Protect your car.... clean out the trash that falls down behind the kick panels and from the firewall cowl area, it'll eventually rust out through your firewall (this is most unpleasant).

Related Components
Dashboards
Kick Panels.

A/C diagnostics
For starters, check the obvious.
Slipping belt.
System decharged.
Electrical problem (short in wire, broken relay, fuse, switch....)
Vacuum problem (disconnected or broken hose).

Due to the complexity of these systems and the fact you can go to school for a "long time" to figure out how to fix this stuff.... I'll try and add some diagnostic troubleshooting diagrams when I get a chance (ho ho).

Major Assemblies (with non-technical descriptions, and some exploded diagrams & photos).

The big Case on the firewall, partially obscured by the fender, usually broken when people do engine work... it has all the hoses and stuff going to it and some shiney thing attached to it. This is the "Evaporator & blower motor case".

The Big box under the dashboard with all the hoses and stuff that blows the (hopefully) cold air on you. This is the "under dash duct-work".

The rest of the stuff that makes the system function:

Please note in the above photos..... when working on the inside components, there's no DASHBOARD or SEATS in my way. When working on the firewall portion - there's no fenders, hoods or anything else in my way. If you're going to be working on a car that you don't want to take apart in order to fix it... you may want to see my "Keep your sanity FAQ". There IS a way to work on this stuff without loosing your mind.
